Welcome to the nineteenth episode of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!”
As the low-carb lifestyle continues to dominate the mainstream of popular dieting in 2007 through such plans as the South Beach and Atkins diets, the health “experts” and policy makers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) continue to flog their tired old low-fat, pro-surgery and medication agenda. When will they ever learn?!
Do you wanna know exactly what they are saying people need to do for weight loss and improved health this year? In today’s episode, Jimmy dissects their platform and agenda bit by bit and tells you why it is so severely misguided as only he can!

Hey everyone! You made it back for Episode 19 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Are you ready for another compelling podcast show today? I sure hope so because we’re gonna hit the National Institutes of Health right between the eyeballs today with a direct challenge they should seriously consider.
But first, let’s talk chocolate. Oh yeah, you know you love it and it can even be healthy for you, too. Dr. Jonny Bowden wrote in his latest book “The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth” that dark chocolate actually reduces your risk of getting heart disease, maintains healthy blood pressure levels, and improves insulin sensitivity in healthy people because of the powerful flavanoids found in cocoa. He highly recommends eating chocolate with 60% cocoa or higher at least three times a week. Guess where you can find such a source for this kind of chocolate and without all the sugar and high fructose corn syrup found in most bars these days? It’s at ChocoPerfection.com. ChocoPerfection bars are my sweet indulgence because you really can’t tell it’s sugar-free and low-carb. What are you waiting for? Try some today at ChocoPerfection.com.
There’s a new source for health information now at GNMHealth.com. Do you ever get tired of hearing the top health leaders in the United States bemoaning the subject of obesity so much. They always seem to get together in these summits trying to come up with ways to combat the rising obesity rates and usually leave these meetings fired up to share the same old low-fat, low-calorie, watch what you eat diets that have made us fat for decades. Millions upon millions of dollars have been spent by well-meaning researchers who have been trying to grasp this seemingly incurable problem for so many years. They have examined what the problem is and have made their supposedly best recommendations to help solve it, yet the problem not only persists but has even gotten worse. Could it be those “science-based solutions to obesity” have actually been misguided all these years? GASP! You can’t say that! I just did! Some people will thumb their nose up at this assertion and proudly say that these are medically-trained health “experts” and that I should respect what they have to say about the subject of obesity since I am but a mere civilian with no professional experience or education in the field of health and nutrition. Okay, I can tell you that I respect them and I readily admit that I am untrained regarding these things. But that doesn’t mean they are infallible in their advice nor does it mean my opinions on the subject should be automatically rejected either. I do know a thing or two about obesity. There appears to be a real disconnect between the theories about creating permanent weight loss and the application of those theories into the lives of real people so they can bring about the changes that will allow them to live longer and healthier.
In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, we see an attempt by these so-called health “experts” about how to take on the obesity monster. The official executive summary of the Strategic Plan For National Institutes of Health Obesity Research led by Allen M. Spiegel and Barbara M. Alving reveals what their game plan is for attempting to solve the obesity problem this time around. I’ll include a link to this executive summary in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com.
Why is this so important for you to pay attention to? Because this is the same group that is responsible for steering the direction of obesity research by making recommendations in the medical community regarding effective strategies for helping people with weight problems. My biggest concern is and has always been since I’ve been blogging and podcasting about this subject is that the low-carb answer is being entirely ignored as if it does not exist. Withholding information that could help some people find the cure to their obesity problem is unconscionable in my eyes. Don’t misunderstand me, though, I’m not saying low-carb is the end-all diet for anyone who is obese. I’ve repeated that over and over again! But it helped me when I was a 410-pound man and on my way to an early grave due to morbid obesity and I know it can help others if the blinders would simply begin to fall off of the eyes of the people in positions of power over health policy in the United States. All the information they are distributing generally points back to the same old failed strategies they have always promoted for weight loss and it makes me sick to my stomach. Let me break down each of the four “major scientific themes” of their latest strategy for tackling obesity:
1. “preventing and treating obesity through lifestyle modification”
Actually, this is the best recommendation they make. I agree wholeheartedly that the first step in taking on and defeating the problem of obesity is to encourage people to make necessary lifestyle changes. The fact is that low-carb is the lifestyle change millions of people are looking for right now that could radically improve their lives through weight loss and improved health. The reason low-fat/low-calorie/portion-controlled diets have failed people in the past is because they do not provide a reasonable permanant plan for eating healthy. But livin’ la vida low-carb not only helps you lose weight, but it also gives you a delicious and healthy way to keep the weight off forever. That is why the low-carb option for tacking obesity needs to not only be simply suggested, but actively promoted by medical researchers and health experts.
2. “preventing and treating obesity through pharmacologic, surgical, or other medical approaches”
I am not a big fan of the obesity surgeries like gastric bypass and other such ways to help people deal with their obesity problem. I know many people, my mom included, who have had this surgery and ran into many complications as a result. Undoubtedly the people who choose to go this route are desperate and feel like there is no other way to lose weight. That is such a shame and it makes you wonder how many people would have to do this surgery if low-carb were marketed as heavily as the low-fat/low-calorie/portion-control diets have been. I bet the numbers would plummet dramatically because this is the easiest and best weight loss method available for people today.
3. “breaking the link between obesity and its associated health conditions”
How is anyone supposed to do that? The inevitable “link” between obesity and conditions such as Type II diabetes, heart disease, back pain, chronic pain, stroke and worse is undeniable. Obesity itself must be dealt with before any of these other conditions will improve and/or go away forever. We do not need to simply mask the symptoms while the real problem is still not addressed. Dealing effectively with obesity will immediately improve most of these conditions found in obese people.
4. “cross-cutting topics, including health disparities, technology, fostering of interdisciplinary research teams, investigator training, translational research, and education/outreach efforts”
This final suggestion is all about the information that is distributed to the public. My motivation for speaking out so passionately about this subject is nothing more than helping to educate the general public about a way to lose weight that helped me lose nearly 200 pounds. Since the media and medical establishment have failed to arm people with all the information they need to make an informed choice about which plan of action will work best to help them overcome their obesity problem, I believe it is absolutely necessary for alternative means for communicating the low-carb message, like this podcast show and my blog at LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com, to be used to extol the virtues of livin’ la vida low-carb in an “undergroud” movement that can and will have an impact on obesity if we can get past the barrage of lies and distortions coming from the media on a daily basis. The self-proclaimed goal of the Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research is to “strive to facilitate and accelerate progress in obesity research to improve public health.” Well, NIH, if that’s your genuine desire, then I have a personal public challenge for you right now. Starting today, you need to take the low-carb nutritional approach more seriously within any discussion of strategies for dealing with obesity. This issue is not an inevitable one if you simply wake up and see that the low-carb solution is helping so many people take back control of their health for the first time in their entire lives. That’s exactly what it did for me and it’s time others get the same opportunity to hear the truth about low-carb living. We need REAL leaders at the NIH, USDA, FDA, and other powerful health entities on this issue, not just some mamby-pamby robots telling us the same failed recommendations year after year after year. Who’s gonna have the guts to stand up and recommend low-carb? Anyone?

From over 400 pounds to 230, Jimmy Moore is

The federal employees at the NIH apparently do not give a care about the obesity epidemic or the health of the nation. The reason for this must be a “catch 22″ situation with the government (such as the Feds doing nothing about immigration for fear of losing Hispanic votes - even though illegal aliens are stressing our resources to the limit). The Feds are obviously unwilling to be truthful and honest about the obesity (health) epidemic because they do not want to risk their “cozy” relationship with the huge producers of crap (such as sugar and empty carbohydrates) that line our grocery store shelves and hence their pockets with money. We surely know about the well paid lobbyists in congress who give favors and payoffs to the politicians which causes them to lean this way or that way. It does’nt take a rocket scientist to figure out what ordinary citizens are up against - BIG MONEY! How much tax would the Feds lose if General Mills suddenly had to stop producing junk? How about the grocery stores and their revenue? The distributors, transportation, etc,? Thats just one producer! The cold, hard fact is we have to be responsible for our own well being - because the gov’t. and/or big business is not going to do it for us. One last “example” for those who are as brainwashed in our society as the extremist Islamics are in theirs: I give you one word - KATRINA! Did our wonderful, caring gov’t. really come through then or did it actually leave its citizens to fend for themselves? WAKE UP AMERICA because only the strong survive. We need to DO WHAT EACH OF US KNOWS IS RIGHT, GET in shape, LOSE the weight, STOP buying crap and poisoning ourselves, REFUSE to be a victim of greedy big business and an uncaring, selfish bureaucracy. STOP being weak and dying and START being strong and living as we all should be. Only then can we be in a position to elect a governing body thats worth a s—! If this applies and makes any sense to you I’m grateful. If not, just throw it over your shoulder and good luck to you - you’re going to need it… In any case, I wish us all strength, wellness and health - or at least WISDOM if all else fails. Gods speed and blessing…
I couldn’t have said it better myself, Dennis! Have you thought about starting your own podcast show?!
YOU’D BE GREAT!!!
I have had a surgical approach to lose over 160lbs myself. But there are “safer” weight loss surgeries out there. I had a lapband placed, not stomach stapling - no complications of staples busting, malnutrition. It just isn’t that way with a lapband. The WORST complication would mean my band would have to come out and my stomach would go back to normal. I certainly hope that never happens as my band has saved my life and I LOVE not being hungry anymore.
There are real issues like saiety defects that all the low-carbing or low-fat dieting will never fix. Sadly.
I do a low-carb diet WITH my band. It seems to work for me. You see I have to watch my calories AND my carbs. I’m one of those so super sensitive people to carbs - the ones Dr. Atkins speaks of (being Insulin resistance - I have PCOS) that I had to eat less than 5 carbs a day to lose weight and even that I BARELY lost on it. It was a nightmare, frankly. It was just too low. I basically was eating meat and butter because with that low of carbs I didn’t have much play.
Now I can eat a moderate amount of calories and a moderate/lower amount of carbs and still lose weight.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your site and am completely onboard with low-carbing (my husband is diabetic and my 14 year old is also IR with PCOS). I hope to prevent a lapband for her by teaching her about carbs and she is TOTALLY onboard with it. She is an advocate at her high school for a lower carb and a TRUE healthier diet. Of course when she brings South Beach Wraps to school - kids who are sitting next to her eating french fries (because you know they sell those as a VEGETABLE) and a cookie for lunch say things like “Ewwwwww what’s that you’re eating”. Oh well!!
She has lost 25lbs since October doing a low-carb diet and my husband has lost 15 (he didn’t need to lose as much).
Thank again for your terrific website, just wanted you to know there are SAFER weight loss surgeries available for those who are having a tough time with any diet modification.
THANKS for sharing your story, Yvonne! I’m so happy that you found what worked for you and are pleased with the results. YOU GO GIRL!
Keep on sharing about the low-carb lifestyle with your 14-year-old daughter and tell her to hold her head high. She’ll be the healthiest one at her 10-year reunion! HA!
THANKS for listening to my podcast!
I thank God that I discovered low carbing! It is the one thing plus exercise that is finally taking my weight off. After years of dieting-you name it, I have probably tried it-I have found what works for me. I educate myself about the low carb lifestyle and keep up to date by viewing your site,Jimmy.Various forums provide new recipes to try plus allow me to question other low carbers if I need to. I will answer anyone who is interested in how I am losing. I still have a way to go to reach my goal, but I know low carbing will get me there! Thanks for more infoJimmy!
You are living proof of EXACTLY what I talked about in this podcast today, Linda! If you had heard about low-carb living a long time ago, then you would probably be healthier a long time ago. CONGRATS on your progress and keep up the FANTASTIC work!
I think the sad truth in all of this is that alot of people know that low carb works but when they get into a restaurant or are partying on the weekend, it’s easier to make the harder choices then explain why they are being a pain in the butt asking all of the questions.
I think when I failed a couple years ago, that was my problem. I would do good at home but when going out. I would just let it go…………it just wasn’t a LIFESTYLE.
If it isn’t one then it goes away much quicker then if you make the low carb decision instead of the “I will low carb later” one.
let’s face it, if you aren’t prepared to face the world with your lifestyle, nobody is going to help you out.JMO!!!!
Well stated, Wanda! That really is the difference between those who succeed on low-carb and those who fail. It’s not the diet that fails them, but rather their tenacity to make it work for them over their entire life!
You’re gonna LOVE my podcast on Thursday as I explain why low-carb is BETTER than the low-fat/low-calorie diets groups like the NIH have been wanting people to follow. It’s an eye-opening, so come back and check it out!
