Hello and welcome to the Internet’s longest running and best beloved low-carb podcast–“The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore!”

In this week’s first episode (come back on Thursday for more!), our host Jimmy introduces you to the perfectly awful team of Sat and Trans–aka The Bad Fat Brothers. Have you seen or heard them yet? They are a pair of cartoon characters that parade a long list of foods guaranteed to stop your heart dead in its tracks - mostly very high-carb foods - and then tell you that the fats in these dishes are what makes them deadly!

Um, isn’t the main ingredient in a “loaded baked potato” a potato…with tons of carbohydrates? Isn’t the main ingredient in a donut, errrrrr, the very carby dough?!?!?

Listen in to today’s show as Jimmy serves up a healthy, steaming portion of public scorn for this incredibly shallow propaganda campaign from the American Heart Association!

This is Episode 93 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” and it’s so good to have you here as we talk about what was for me a lifechanging experience on the amazingly healthy low-carb lifestyle. Low-carb wasn’t just some diet I went on to lose weight. It was so much more than that and the weight loss was merely a side effect of eating healthier than I ever had before. This way of eating became my permanent lifestyle change and gladly so. I educated myself about why eating carbohydrates in excess was unhealthy, I read Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution and other resources to arm me with the facts, then I implemented those strategies into my own life so I could become the healthiest I could possibly be. Here it is almost four years later and I’m STILL livin’ la vida low-carb and gladly so. Regardless of what you may have heard about low-carb, the fact is it is one of the most nutrient-dense, heart-protective, blood sugar-controlling, cancer-relieving ways you could ever eat. The evidence continues to back up these claims unlike what you get from those who advocate the low-fat, low-calorie, portion-controlled diets. When those diets fail, isn’t it good to know you’ve got another alternative that’s just waiting to swoop you off your feet in the low-carb lifestyle? I’m glad it was there for me when I needed it the most.

But not everyone agrees livin’ la vida low-carb is the health panacea that you and I believe it is. Have you seen what the American Heart Association has come up with as their latest PR campaign regarding the dietary information they provide the general public? If you haven’t heard about “The Bad Fat Brothers” yet, then allow me to introduce them to you now:

Oh my goodness! I do believe the AHA has now reached a new low with the introduction of these two cute, jovial, and innocent-looking, but very sinister, spurious, and smug cartoon characters named “Sat” and “Trans”–aka “The Bad Fat Brothers.” I heard a radio commercial with them featured in it the other day and just about ran off the road it was so insidious. And they even have their own web site at BadFatBrothers.com as well as a national awareness campaign backed by the strength of the American Heart Association. This perverted new propaganda piece from the anti-fat adversaries at the AHA is simply attempting to hoodwink the general public about how allegedly “unhealthy” consuming fat–specifically saturated fat and trans fat–is in your diet. You are never gonna believe this until you see if for yourself, so be sure to visit that web site to see how low the AHA has gone in spreading rumors and distortions of the facts about fat consumption.

As the names imply, “Sat” is short for saturated fat and “Trans” is for (you guessed it!) trans fat. These two can’t-help-but-love-them chaps go blabbering all about what they love to eat as you navigate around the BadFatsBrothers.com web site. The purpose of this dynamic duo is to attempt to warn the public about how dangerous it is for them to be consuming all that saturated fat and trans fat in their diet lest they “break your heart.” Just a quick browse around their official web site will show you how disgusting the malicious lies from the AHA have become. How can they get away with flaunting such unfounded statements like these against fat without any recourse?

Standing in front of a diner on a street scene when you visit the Fat Brothers web site, “Sat” and “Trans” are yucking it up with one another bragging about all the foods they just absolutely love. I couldn’t help but notice much of the foods they brag and boast about the most are extremely high in carbohydrates–pot pie, sugary desserts, French fries, doughnuts, biscuits, pancakes, croissants, loaded potatoes, fast food, cookies, double scoop ice cream sundae, and more. Of course, “Sat”–who describes himself as “the original ‘bad’ fat”–couldn’t help but also talk about having a “big, fat juicy steak with loads of butter and don’t forget the sausages.” He also lists beef, bacon, and all kinds of other meats as his favorites–as if these foods are supposed to be harmful to your health. The same goes for the “cheese platter…oooh, Swiss and cheddar and Monterey Jack!” Yeah and what’s so wrong with eating all of that? While I certainly do not disagree that trans fat is bad news for your health (although I’m not in favor of the current trend to ban trans fats in cities across America), saturated fat is another issue entirely and has gotten a very bad rap by health policy groups like the AHA, American Diabetes Association, the Food & Drug Administration, and the United States Department of Agriculture, just to name a few.

It is a sad day in America when every kind of fat there is gets lumped together under the guise that it is bad for you. But that message has unfortunately been so hammered down our throats for most of our lives that most people have bought into the lie that eating fat makes you fat (despite the fact that the research has not shown this to be true!). And, no, saturated fat does NOT “clog your arteries” as this “Sat” character contends. Actually, just the opposite is true and consuming fat–even SATURATED FAT–is extremely healthy for you. Keep in mind the wise words of noted low-carb researcher Dr. Jeff Volek from the University of Connecticut who told me in an interview I conducted with him last year that as long as you keep your carbohydrate intake low, dietary fat will be burned and not stored. Even more importantly, though, is what Dr. Volek had to say about this nonsense that saturated fat will “clog your arteries.” His answer: not if you are livin’ la vida low-carb! Here’s what he said: “The same holds true for the atherogenic effects of saturated fat. The body handles saturated fat better when carbohydrates are low.” Let me translate that for you in case you missed it, AHA! If you are consuming a low-carb diet–with foods like butter, cheese, and steak–then the risk to your heart is a non-factor. It’s time to face the reality of the nutritional science rather than repeating the same old failed dietary information we’ve had to put up with for decades. Get with the modern times already and realize there’s better and more accurate information to be sharing with the public nowadays than the same failed low-fat message!

Of course, if they ever acknowledged the most current research about fat and carbohydrates, then that would mean the AHA and others would have to swallow some major humble pie to admit they were wrong. So instead, they are now pushing more of the same with their “Face The Fats” link at the end of that radio commercials where the misinformation campaign continues about fat. Look at what they’re trying to push on the American public about the dangers of eating fat at AmericanHeart.org/facethefats. What’s most sad is that these are supposed to be semi-intelligent people educating the public about health at the AHA. It’s just too bad they couldn’t be more wrong if they tried! The AHA’s boorish “Bad Fats Brothers” brainwashing is one of the most despicable acts of desperation I’ve seen in a while from these low-fat apologists. Do you think they have finally realized the low-fat gig is up and they are now promoting a diet that is on its last leg? It could explain why they’re pulling out all the stops to slow the momentum of the healthy alternative that livin’ la vida low-carb has become thanks to the preponderance of the evidence from the mountains of research that just continues to pour in? It certainly appears that way to me! How about you?
