Instead, by embracing a healthy high-fat, low-carb nutritional lifestyle change, you can be freed from the bondage of the typical “diet” trends that are out there and live a life that is enjoyable and healthy at the same time. He explores REAL solutions to the constant struggles to lose weight and get healthy and will give you a whole new perspective on the great diet debate through a concept he calls The Black Box. Don’t miss Jimmy’s March 21, 2012 full-length podcast interview with Adam about this e-book that could very well change the way you look at nutrition forever!

We like to stay on top of what’s happening in the low-carb community and bring to you breaking news when it happens. And today we begin the podcast with a shocking turn of events that took place on Friday, January 27, 2011 when a group of dietitians began investigating Steve Cooksey’s low-carb diabetes blog called Diabetes Warrior because they claim he is giving nutritional counseling services to his readers without a license. As a formerly obese man who was taking insulin and medications to help control his diabetes, Steve no longer has to do that since finding healthy high-fat, low-carb living. This apparently has not sat well with these RDs in North Carolina who would like nothing more than to silence his First Amendment rights to free speech. This could be a HUGE opportunity to spread the low-carb message if this story gets some major media attention and we’ll be following it closely as it unfolds. Here’s a YouTube video of my 9-minute conversation with Steve Cooksey which airs in today’s episode:

Just a few short years ago, Dr. Lowell Gerber was still mired in conventional wisdom regarding the role nutrition plays in health, especially heart health. But something kept bothering him about a treatment that seemed too heavily focused on prescribing more and more drug therapies like statins and less interested in getting to the root causes of the issue to begin with. That’s when he came across the work of a fellow physician from Lawrence, Kansas named Dr. Mary Vernon and her Innovative Metabolic Solutions program teaching medical professionals about the basics of using carbohydrate-restriction therapeutically with patients to help them with obesity, diabetes and many other chronic diseases. Dr. Gerber has been a sponge soaking in all of this information and has rekindled his passion and love for making patients healthier than ever before. Jimmy discusses all of the changes that have happened since Dr. Gerber found livin’ la vida low-carb in past few years and what his big plans are to continue educating others about this healthy nutritional approach!

Holistic psychiatrist and certified GAPS practitioner Dr. Judy Tsafrir is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Dr. Tsafrir is one of the most enthusiastic fans of the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) protocol as outlined by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Jimmy has been working on getting an interview with Dr. Campbell-McBride for a while (and he’s still pursuing it!), but he found Dr. Tsafrir’s dedication to and implementation of these principles in her own practice as a great reason to have her come on the show to talk about it.

The focus of this nutritional plan for treating a wide variety of mental disorders like autism, depression, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, learning disabilities, dyslexia, dyspraxia and more is on the consumption of real, whole foods that restore gut health to bring everything into proper balance again in the body. As you can imagine, Dr. Tsafrir is a great fan of traditional diets as espoused by The Weston A. Price Foundation, the evolutionary principles of the Paleo diet, and a healthy high-fat (especially saturated fat), moderate protein, low-carb diet for the best health you can possibly attain. Her ultimate goal is to heal all of her patients through the therapeutic use of natural dietary and detoxification steps. She’s doing just that through her medical practice in Newton, Massachusetts!

Nutritional therapy practitioner and healthy living activist Diana Rodgers is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Diana dealt with a series of health concerns as a child that led her down a journey to find the diet that was right for her. Doctors thought she might have lactose intolerance and recommended to her parents to have her drink soy milk which led to the inevitable hunger, fatigue and digestive issues. She became passionate about the subject of real food during high school after working at a roadside stand featuring fresh foods from a local farm in New York state. Diana didn’t realize the answer to her poor digestion was staring her in the face in that food she was selling as a teenager.

It wasn’t until her mid-20′s before Diana finally had the answer to what plagued her–it was Celiac Disease that was causing her all the problems. She immediately implemented a gluten-free diet and got better which fueled her desire to learn more and more about the role food plays on health. What she discovered ignited a fire within her to educate everyone she comes into contact with about the life-changing benefits of consuming real, whole, nutrient-dense foods that comprised the traditional diets of our early ancestors.

Diana and her family now run their own family farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts and are active in their community promoting a dramatic shift in the way “food” is perceived by the general public. In her interview with Jimmy, don’t miss what Diana did to bring about change in the local public schools where her children attend. What would happen if everyone took their passion for healthy living to the degree that Diana Rodgers has? We’d be healthier and happier than we ever thought possible! Enjoy this engaging conversation about what it means to eat real food.

PLUS: Have you tried the All-Natural Nutrition Drink Supplement Low-Carb LifeShotz yet? It’s a power-packed powder that you mix with water to deliver improved cellular function, youthful endurance and stamina, excellent mood enhancements, and more energy than you’ll know what to do with!
Dr. Wahls has come on the scene with a bang ever since her November 2011 TEDx Iowa City lecture “Minding Your Mitochondria” went viral on YouTube garnering a quarter million views and counting! She explains how she was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis in 2000 that forced her into a wheelchair and left her with no easy answers with what to do about her rapidly declining health. But after traditional medicine failed to provide the much-needed treatment for her MS, Dr. Wahls decided to research everything she could get her hands on about this and was led to the Paleo diet. Today, while still not 100% better from her debilitating disease, she engages in regular bicycle rides and leads an active and healthy life.

She outlined much of what she has learned about the relationship between the right kind of diet and disease control in her book Minding Your Mitochondria and is currently seeking a publisher in 2012 to help spread her message to an even wider audience in her book tentatively-titled Up From The Chair: Defeating Progressive MS Without Drugs. With everything she has been able to overcome in her life since that fateful MS diagnosis in 2000 left her seemingly hopeless, it’s unimaginable that anything could stand the way of Dr. Wahls achieving whatever she desires in her life!

This is truly one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of health triumph you will ever hear and we are privileged to have her here today on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” If you haven’t seen the infamous YouTube video that has been reposted on blogs and in the social media featuring Dr. Terry Wahls yet, then watch it here:

Nephrologist and advanced glycation end products researcher Dr. Jaime Uribarri discusses “The AGE-less Way” program he developed today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore!

Dr. Uribarri has long studied the impact of advanced glycation end products (aka AGEs) and their negative impact on health, including diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. It’s one of the reasons why he developed what he describes as “a practical program that gives you control over your health” known as “The AGE-less Way.” You’ll quickly find this isn’t just another weight loss gimmick, but rather a method for restoring your body to the health it was meant to have. Some of the concepts Dr. Uribarri shared during this interview will be quite controversial to those of us in the low-carb and Paleo communities, including why he believes animal fats INCREASE AGEs which then leads to proteins sticking together that leads to atheroschlerosis. You know Jimmy will have a thing or two to say about this during this fascinating conversation.

PLUS: If you have not yet tried the brand new Natural line of Quest Bars that Jimmy Moore played a part in developing sweetened with a unique blend of erythritol and stevia to keep this power-packed low-carb protein bar made with 100% all-natural ingredients, then you are missing out on a real bona fide treat. The new bars come in five exciting new flavors, including Cinnamon Roll, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coconut Cashew, Lemon Cream Pie (Jimmy’s favorite!) and Strawberry Cheesecake. Of course, the Original line of Quest Bars is still 99.6% all-natural (with just a tinge of maltodextrin-free sucralose) with the flavors Peanut Butter & Jelly, Vanilla Almond Crunch, Peanut Butter Supreme, Mixed Berry Bliss, Chocolate Brownie and Apple Pie. There are so many to choose from, then hardest decision will be figuring out which ones to try first. They also have sampler packs of both the Natural and Original Quest Bars for you to taste them all for yourself! And don’t forget, if you haven’t tried Quest Bars and want TWO FREE BARS, you can get those by CLICKING HERE (and be sure to mention you heard about Quest Bars on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” and they’ll prioritize your order).

It’s one of the reasons why he developed what he describes as “a practical program that gives you control over your health” known as “The AGE-less Way.” You’ll quickly find this isn’t just another weight loss gimmick, but rather a method for restoring your body to the health it was meant to have.
file size: 39.6mb

We finish up an epic week of health podcasting here at The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore today as we air the final “Encore Week” 2012 episode by featuring the top vote-getter by my listeners from the 2011 interview guests. We’ve already heard some amazing conversations with Swedish LCHF physician Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, a continuation of the “safe starches” debate with Perfect Health Diet co-author Paul Jaminet, blood sugar expert Jenny Ruhl and Wheat Belly author and cardiologist Dr. William Davis. Today we welcome in a Nashville, TN-based neurosurgeon named Dr. Jack Kruse who exploded on the scene in 2011 seemingly out of nowhere.

Dr. Kruse is one of the most interestingly strange people you’ll ever meet in the Paleo/low-carb community. He’s an outside-the-box thinker with a passionate zeal for getting to the bottom of the real causes of obesity, chronic disease and all that ails us. In 2011, he created a very prolific and popular web site at JackKruse.com where he outlined his “Leptin Rx” principles that helped him lose weight and change his life forever. We’ll be hearing lots more from this health rebel who will be making an impact for many more years to come!

Plus, Dr. Kruse answers these questions from LLVLC Show listeners:

CASSIE ASKS:
Is there any truth to the slowed metabolism as a result of an extended low carb diet; and any related effect on thyroid health as reported by Matt Stone quoting Dr. Atkins?

ANN ASKS:
I wonder if you could ask Dr Jack Kruse about any special details of diet and exercise needed for those who are quite obese, have Hashimotos and find it hard to get even the low carb diet to work. His Leptin Rx is probably the answer but can even more steps be taken????

JAMIE ASKS:
If your doctor has told you that they want to put you on statins, what (evidenced-based) references would you quote to argue against it?

JENNIFER ASKS:
If calories don’t count when you are leptin sensitive, and they do if you are leptin resistant, how much do calories matter during the reset period?

JILL ASKS:
Do carbs deplete the body of Vitamin C? People who eat a high carb diet, may need much more Vitamin C to prevent scurvy?

DONNA ASKS:
Research suggests that Neu5gc in red meat (and to a lesser extent dairy) leads to inflammation and diseases. It has nothing to do with saturated fat. I am an avid low-carber (and I love dairy!), but I am really concerned about this research and the possibility that Neu5gc might explain the association that so much research has found between cancer and red meat consumption, which we low-carbers tend to explain away by saying the studies confound red meat consumption with processed meat consumption.

LISA ASKS:
As a neurosurgeon, do you have any suggestions for a chronic daily headache?

PAT ASKS:
In his earlier interview on your show, Dr. Kruse mentioned a relationship between his torn meniscus and Leptin. Could he explain that connection in plain English for us non-medical folks?

LIZZIE FROM ENGLAND ASKS:
I had lived on a so called ‘healthy’ wholegrain, low fat, high fruit (sugar!) – with some added soya – diet for nearly 46 years, can the damage/inflammation that I may have created in my body be completely reversed if I maintain my LCHF diet? In other words, even though I eat low carb now, will I still be more susceptible to (for example) arthritis/Alzheimer’s/cancer because of my past high carb diet?

TERRY ASKS:
Do you know of any research that shows the effect of low carb living by age. More specifically, by levels of testosterone or estrogen, which, would be higher in people in their 20′s vs. older adults. Since these hormones regulate lipoprotein I would think the younger you are, the better your body would be at regulating fat mobilization. I’m looking for any research on this topic. I guess the bottom line questions is do younger people have more success on low carb diets.

ELIZABETH ASKS:
Why do I gain weight like gangbusters if I go off the ketogenic diet I’m adapted to and why I do I struggle to lose weight when I return to ketosis. By the way, my fasting insulin is VERY LOW.

SHANNON ASKS:
I am T2 Diabetic. Rather than up my meds back in April, my doctor put me on Atkins. While my waking glucose readings improved almost immediately, I was still having problems with dawn phenomenon. Upon stumbling across Dr. Kruse’s Leptin Rx, I tweaked my WOE to a whole foods version of Atkins and followed his Leptin Rx. I know that it works because I have not experienced dawn phenomenon since late July, shortly after beginning the Rx. I am still following the original Rx. I would like to know how following Dr. Kruse’s Rx worked to stop my problem with dawn phenomenon when going low carb in itself did not? What is the connection between Leptin Resistance and T2 Diabetes?

LAURA ASKS:
Your leptin prescription suggests not working out until after 5PM, and I’m wondering why that works best.

CINDY ASKS:
Could you offer further insight as to when a person is no longer leptin resistant. For instance, if you have been following a ketogenic diet for months, obviously cravings are gone and insulin and blood glucose are in good order even though you might still be fat. I ask this because of bringing intermittent fasting into the mix. He cautions against IF if you are still leptin resistant, but it seems to be the only thing that budges my scales.

IG ASKS:
When it comes to balancing the leptin reset vs. igniting the m-TOR pathway, how much protein is too much?

Why do I gain [...]</itunes:summary>

You’ve found the #1 low-carb podcast on the Internet called The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore and stumbled upon our historic “Encore Week” where Jimmy invites back the favorite podcast guests from the previous year as voted on by his listeners. “Encore Week” 2012 has been making waves with in-depth, quality interviews featuring Swedish LCHF physician Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt on Monday, a continuation of the “safe starches” debate with the Perfect Health Diet co-author Paul Jaminet on Tuesday, and then the incomparable expert on all things related to blood sugar Jenny Ruhl on Wednesday.

Today’s “Encore Week” 2012 interview features one of the breakthrough authors in the low-carb community in 2011. He is Milwaukee, WI-based cardiologist Dr. William Davis who wrote an incredible new book warning of the dangers to health and weight of consuming wheat called Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health. While this seemingly harmless food we are consuming is actually promoted by health experts and in government guidelines as “healthy,” Dr. Davis warns that major changes in the gliadin content of modern-day wheat is what makes it so dastardly for us to be consuming now. This book is one of the more seminal works on this subject that will hopefully spawn even more research and a closer examination by others in the years to come.

Plus, Dr. Davis answers these questions from LLVLC Show listeners:

DAN ASKS:
Thank you Dr. Davis for writing the book “Wheat Belly”. I’ve bought 3 copies to hand out to friends, plus the audio version. It’s making a difference. I’m sure you are receiving lots of success stories. I have lost 145 pounds, one big reason is I put the wheat out. I tell everyone I know to read your book.

I’ve listened to the audio version several times. You mention the “accompanying CD ROM”–Is there a CD ROM that goes along with the book? Will there be a paperback version and if so what will be the updates?

JAMIE ASKS:
If wheat has addictive properties, are their any supplements or even drugs that someone who is wheat addicted might take to help them wean themselves off wheat. Can you list the other grains that have possible wheat like effects? Hops are used in beer. Any thoughts on beer?

If your doctor has told you that they want to put you on statins, what (evidenced-based) references would you quote to argue against it?

MIKE SAYS:
Check this out: ‘Statins can cut prostate threat’: Medication for cholesterol can reduce risk of cancer

Now that Lipitor’s patent has run out, here’s the latest “coincidental” side effect benefit of statins: Just more one more BS epidemiological study.

PETER FROM TAIWAN ASKS:
Regarding the Apo E4 gene, about 1 in 5 people have it putting them at greater risk of developing atherosclerosis. Shouldn’t people find out if they have this gene before starting a low-carb, high-fat diet?

LUKE ASKS:
Should individuals with high heart scan calcium scores avoid the heavy ingestion of fat at one meal followed immediately by intense exercise or exertion?

Does saturated fat contribute to coronary plaque because it has a flat molecular structure unlike unsaturated fats whose molecular structure is “bent” or “kinky”?

You explain in Track Your Plaque that 20% of coronary artery plaque is calcium. A heart scan measures calcium in the arteries. Therefore total plaque can be estimated by multiplying the calcium score by five. In this regard can you answer the following questions. Proponents of chelation therapy contend that chelation can remove plaque from the arteries. Do you believe chelation therapy removes calcium from the arteries? What is the purpose of the body including 20% calcium in plaque?

JANET ASKS:
If someone has HDL of 79 and triglycerides of 62, but an LDL pattern A of 199, is this a concern? The reason my naturopath is concerned is that i have high blood pressure and took a cardiac test which measures to the fraction the carotid artery which is supposed to be very indicative of the whole artery system and it showed very little plaque but lots of thickening (from the high blood pressure). I’m 53 and have the carotid of a 72 year old. Yikes. He was trying to blame this on Atkins, but i’ve only been on Atkins for 6 months. So I’m probably saving my life right?

CATHY ASKS:
Do you think CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) will aid in weight loss? Have you ever used it with patients?

Don’t miss listening to the rest of the “Encore Week” 2012 interviews featuring Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, Paul Jaminet, Jenny Ruhl and Dr. Jack Kruse.

Hey everyone and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore for Jimmy’s annual “Encore Week” episodes where he has invited YOUR favorite podcast guests from the previous year. “Encore Week” 2012 has been well-received so far featuring interviews on Monday with Swedish LCHF physician Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt and then again on Tuesday with Perfect Health Diet co-author Paul Jaminet.

Today’s interview features an expert in the subject of blood sugar and diabetes named Jenny Ruhl from “Blood Sugar 101.” Ruhl supports the use of carbohydrate-restriction as a means for obtaining optimal blood sugar readings, especially for diabetics, and believes blood sugar control is much more important than wondering what your insulin level is. One of the most fascinating parts of Jimmy’s original July 2011 interview with her in Episode 486 was how she spoke so matter-of-factly regarding a wide variety of issues in the low-carb community that had your eyebrows doing jumping jacks. Expect more of the same in this follow-up interview from one of the best of the best interview guests of 2011!

Plus, Ruhl answers these questions from LLVLC Show listeners:

JAMIE ASKS:
Have you done any research looking at the human insulin response to artificial sweeteners? Do you know anyone who has done, not just an N=1 blood sugar test on Diet Coke, for example, but to measure their insulin response to Diet Coke, even though blood sugar may not be raised.

DAN ASKS:
What is the real heart disease risk to diabetics and the effectiveness of statins for diabetics, especially for primary prevention?

JOLI ASKS:
I’m 58 years old, 5’5″ and 168 lbs. Before low-carb I had gotten up to 215. I got myself a blood glucose monitor a couple of months ago. And last night I made sweet potatoes and white rice with egg for the dogs and, for the first time, ate a big bowl myself thinking they were safe starches. I ate 1/2 of a large sweet potato and two ladles full of rice and 1 egg. About 30-45 mins. later I tested my blood sugar and it was 241! What damage did that do to me? I tried testing again a couple hours later and it was back to 124. First thing this morning after an overnight fast, it was 103. After the very high reading yesterday, I became very sleepy for about an hour and then I CRAVED sugar! Any comments on this?

I am very near sighted. When I was a kid, every year I would go to the eye doctor and need a stronger prescription. Could high blood sugar then from spending Saturday mornings eating candy in front of the TV for hours on end be the reason for my eyesight deterioration?

LEZLEE ASKS:
I read so many studies on PubMed and Medscape and it is so contradictory at least regarding meat vs. carbs regarding cancer, weight gain, and Type 2 diabetes. How can we distinguish between what research is real or just some researchers who have a hypotheses that they want to be true?

GINA ASKS:
I’m diabetic, and I’ve been following a very low-carb diet to control my blood sugar. Most days, I eat fewer than 20 grams of carbs, all from vegetables and nuts. No gluten, no sugar. My blood sugar has really responded well, especially my post-prandial numbers, but I simply cannot get my fasting sugars into the normal range. I’ve also been exercising and even taking a dose of insulin some nights, but in the morning my blood sugar is always above 120. Does Jenny have any suggestions for me?

Don’t miss listening to the rest of the “Encore Week” 2012 interviews featuring Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, Paul Jaminet, Dr. William Davis and Dr.

Jack Kruse.

Hey everyone and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore for Jimmy’s annual “Encore Week” episodes where he invites YOUR favorite podcast guests from the previous year. “Encore Week” 2012 started off well with Swedish LCHF physician Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt on Monday and continues on today with yet another fabulous and somewhat controversial guest in Perfect Health Diet author Paul Jaminet. After Jimmy first interviewed him on this podcast in March 2011, he became extremely curious about one of the key concepts in his nutritional program known as “safe starches” (white potatoes, white rice, tapioca, etc. for their low level of toxins) that spawned a series of blog posts that began in earnest a very serious and important discussion within the low-carb and Paleo communities–even drawing several insightful and spirited responses from noted nutrition-minded physicians Dr. Ron Rosedale and Dr. Joseph Mercola. Listen to Paul discuss his reaction to the “buzz” that happened in 2011 about this and what he has in store for 2012!

Plus, Jaminet answers these questions from LLVLC Show listeners:

DAN ASKS:
If “safe starches” raise a diabetic’s blood sugar, should he or she still eat them? As a Type 2, I’ve always observed the principle of eating to your meter and most “safe starches” jack up my blood sugar.

JAMES ASKS:
What are your thoughts on the potential lack of toxicity of fructose within the context of very low polyunsaturated fat presence; both dietary and stored PUFA?

LISA ASKS:
Are cassava flour, plantain flour, arrowroot, and wild rice all safe starches?

Do you have an opinion on nutritional yeast for a cheese-like flavor for those who can’t eat dairy? I avoid autolyzed yeast and yeast extract because they are supposed to be excitotoxins (MSG), but I don’t know if that also applies to nutritional yeast?

Do you recommend any specific tests (such as the GI Effects test from Metametrix) to test for infectious organisms like parasites? Do you have any thoughts about using high dose oregano oil to kill parasites (such as Biotics “ADP” product which is standardized sustained release oregano)? One of Biotics’ recent webinars referenced a study where 600 mg of oregano given for 6 weeks effectively killed parasites.

JAMIE ASKS:
Many people go “cold turkey” by dropping their carbs to a very low level and after losing weight, experimenting to see how much carbs each day they can tolerate before putting on weight. Do any have thoughts about a “soft-landing” approach where carbs are reduced week by week until weight starts falling, thereby avoiding any negative symptoms of the big drop?

Don’t miss listening to the rest of the “Encore Week” 2012 interviews featuring Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, Jenny Ruhl, Dr. William Davis and Dr. Jack Kruse.

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE SPONSOR OF “ENCORE WEEK” 2012: Quest Protein Bars who have a brand new Natural line sweetened with stevia and erythritol featuring the flavors Cinnamon Roll, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coconut Cashew, Lemon Cream Pie (Jimmy’s favorite!) and Strawberry Cheesecake.
Happy New Year and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore for the very first episode of 2012 featuring a brand new interview with one of 2011′s most popular guests Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt! He’s the first interview as part of Jimmy’s annual “Encore Week” episodes where he invites back the best of the best from the previous year. “Encore Week” 2012 starts off with one of the biggest low-carb superstars in the Scandinavian world in Dr. Eenfeldt who is taking what they call LCHF (low-carb, high-fat) to a whole new level of mainstream acceptance that will have you longing for the same kind of revolution to begin happening in the United States.

Plus, Dr. Eenfeldt answers these questions from LLVLC Show listeners:

DAN ASKS:
Could Dr. Eenfeldt comment on the saturated fat tax in his neighboring Scandanavian country of Denmark?

ELIZABETH ASKS:
Why do I gain weight like gangbusters if I go off the ketogenic diet I’m adapted to and why do I not lose weight when I return to the ketogenic state? My fasting insulin is VERY LOW by the way.

FORTUNE ASKS:
A common topic in the low-carb community are the struggles of women over 40 eating this way. We all know men have a much easier time losing the weight than women, esp. women over 40. But none of the experts has ever to my knowledge addressed any tips or tricks especially for this group. Do women need to balance their estrogen before they can lose the weight? Or after 40 is just impossible for women to fully return to a normal pre-menopause weight?

LIZ ASKS:
I’m from the UK and my total cholesterol level at the beginning of the year 2011 was 4.87. Now, when I had my cholesterol measured a few weeks ago after eating low-carb, high-fat for nearly one year it had risen to a massive 8.58. The only thing that has changed is my diet, but I understood that high fat eating has no impact on cholesterol levels in the blood! Is there an upper total cholesterol limit that is regarded as unsafe? Should I be pleased that my cholesterol is so high or does this have any negative health implications?

SUSAN ASKS:
What is the best way to talk to my endocrinologist about low-carb, high-fat? She was happy to hear I was cutting starches and sugars, but as soon as I said the word “Atkins” she said “Atkins causes heart attacks” and “Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack.” She then went on to tell me I should do the lower-fat, low-carb South Beach Diet if I wanted to do low carb. Needless to say, a heated discussion ensued after that. Do you have any special tips regarding the best way to approach my doctor? Should I simply try and find another endocrinologist?

PAUL ASKS:
To what extent can a ketogenic diet impact the thyroid and/or adrenal health of a person with sub-clinical thyroid and/or adrenal dysfunction? Does low-dose cortisol impact insulin resistance?

JAMIE ASKS:
If your doctor has told you that they want to put you on statins, what (evidenced-based) references would you quote to argue against it?

CASSIE ASKS:
Is there any truth to the creation of a slowed metabolism as a result of an extended low carb diet?

JANET ASKS:
I would like to know if he has experience putting people without gallbladders on high-fat low carb diets and if so, how do they do?

Don’t miss the rest of the “Encore Week” 2012 interviews featuring Paul Jaminet, Jenny Ruhl, Dr. William Davis and Dr. Jack Kruse later this week.
