The food freedom movement has gained some major momentum in recent years as the war on farmers and consumer access to real food has intensified. That’s where non-profit food advocacy groups like Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense Fund have been so critical in educating, supporting, and defending the right to real food access for all. John Moody, a Louisville, Kentucky-based farmer, author, speaker, and Executive Director for the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund, has been an enthusiastic supporter of real food since it helped him restore his failing health due to allergies, constant ailments, duodenal ulcers, and dental decay. It was that journey has led him to become active in helping product the rights of people to get the real food they need to heal, too.

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund was launched on July 4, 2007 and is a non-profit organization recognized under the Internal Revenue Code as a Section 501(c)(4) organization. This group was created to protect the rights of farmers and consumers to engage in direct commerce; it protects the rights of farmers to sell the products of the farm and the rights of consumers to access the foods of their choice from the source of their choice. They are a true grassroots organization and receive no government funding and little or no corporate funding. The primary source of revenue is from the membership fees collected, donations and grants. Become a member of the Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense Fund by CLICKING HERE.

Listen in as John and I have an in-depth conversation about why the FDA thinks that we have no fundamental right to choose the food we can eat, why small farmers face such needless regulations, the government’s all-out war on small farms, and more! Whether you are already on board with the real food message or not, we can and should rally around organizations like the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund who are standing on the frontline of the battle over what we feed our families and ourselves.

Food awareness is on the rise as more and more people are reconnecting with real food again. But with all the confusing terms like organic, natural, and grass-fed, how do you know if you are really getting the best possible quality food to feed yourself and your family? When it comes to purchasing a cow from a local farmer, there are certain things to look out for to know if they are doing things the right way. That’s why we invited on a grass-fed cattle rancher from Braintree, Massachusetts named Joanie Walker from Walker Farm at Whorltleberry Hill. She knows the games that many farmers try to play with consumers pretending to provide quality meats for them to eat and is here today to provide her expert tips for buying grass-fed beef.

Listen in as Jimmy and Joanie talk about how she got interested in getting a cow many years ago that led to many cows, why she wanted to feed her customers like she wanted to eat, how grass-fed providers can cut corners, why she doesn’t ship her meat through the mail, the shocking ingredients used to feed cattle under the guise of “grass,” how to look for people who are certified grass-fed, how to look for cattle that has been fed GMO hay and corn, be aware of the human waste fertilizer (a ton of crap!) sold to farmers, why you’ve got to vet your farmer, why the “no growth hormones” doesn’t mean no hormones, how the color of your grass-fed beef can help you determine the quality, why the grass-fed beef burgers at Carl’s Jr. is from Australia and that’s not good, the farmer can help you cook grass-fed beef properly, how different cows have a variety of tastes to them, why calling a cow “angus” merely means it’s 50% black, why you should pay attention to how the farmer treats you to know how they treat their animals, how a bellowing cow is a sign of adrenaline which makes tough meat, how the USDA measures the grade of a cow from the marbling, why she doesn’t get “certified organic” (although she does all the organic protocols), and how people can find a quality cattle rancher in their area.

Beef has been under assault in recent years as a primary culprit in both global warming and health decline. But the only problem with these public perceptions of cattle is that they are dead wrong. For an environmental lawyer turned rancher named Nicolette Hahn Niman, who just happens to be a longtime vegetarian, says none of the arguments made against red meat from an environmental or public health perspective are valid. She’s written a new book about it called Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production to make a compelling argument for responding to these charges against meat.

Listen in as Jimmy and Nicolette talk about why people believe cattle are bad for the Earth and their health, how livestock actually contribute to the ecosystem making the land better off, why small-scale farms producing grass-fed meats can and should become the primary basis for the American food supply, how factory farming has caused damage to animal, the environment, and the humans that consume the meats produced by them, why none of the claims about beef on health have been shown to be true, how the popular notion that it takes more water to create a pound of meat is just plain wrong, how the human diet has changed so radically in just the past century, and how real sustainability in the food supply is the wave of the future of human survival.

Every successful movement needs visionaries who can assess the current trends and make educated predictions about what will happen in the future. That’s the role that Denver, CO-based Paleo advocate Will White from “Caveman Cafeteria” has taken on in the Paleo community seeing how to make this lifestyle sustainable from a business perspective to help the message remain relevant to the masses who need to hear about it. You might recall his Kickstarter campaign to open the first Paleo food stand in Denver in 2013 and now he’s turned to focusing on his very successful Paleo meal delivery service along with offering Paleo nutrition coaching from his company’s in-house nutritionist Heather Kelly.

Listen to Jimmy and Will have quite the eclectic conversation about a wide variety of subjects, including how he got interested in fitness and eventually finding Crossfit, his Kickstarter campaign to start a Paleo food truck and catering business in Denver, Colorado, why a food truck is a good business model “if you’re not very good at math,” the incredible difficulty of making a profitable business as a Paleo restaurant, why he believes a healthy Paleo meal delivery service is the future moneymaking business opportunity, the success of a similar meal delivery service called The Fresh Diet, why he chose the term “caveman” in his business name instead of Paleo or ancestral, his in-house nutritionist Heather Kelly from “OPENutrition” who promotes Paleo nutrition to customers, his #FeedARevolution passion he lives by, why average, everyday people aren’t as conscious of the issue of food sustainability, how close we are to the “vertical farming” concept being a reality, why people need to stop relying on the government to do things for us, how Paleo convinced him that we are self-sufficient as individuals and don’t need help, the problem with giving doctors an incentive to promote drugs, Robb Wolf’s work with the first responders in Reno, Nevada, the new marijuana edibles brand he’s developing called Low Carb High, and more. Will is a bit eccentric and some might say just a little crazy. But we could use more forward-thinking people like him to bring Paleo to the forefront of mainstream thinking.
