The current state of nutritional health research is in shambles. With all the medical advice that’s being given to patients that seems to go back and forth saying one thing is for you one day and then turning right around and stating that same thing is suddenly bad for you, what is a patient to believe? For a Scottish general practitioner named Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, he’s been observing the games that are played with the research and stands up against the way Big Medicine is manipulating the studies towards things that make the most money and not necessarily the actions that will improve the health of patients. Dr. Kendrick has released a new book about this subject entitled Doctoring Data: How to sort out medical advice from medical nonsense.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kendrick discuss his skepticism about how the state of scientific research is a “crock,” why the bad science has been so successful at penetrating the culture, how old ideas tend to die very hard, the simple narrative that makes people understand (even if it’s wrong), how it’s so difficult for the layperson to decipher the good from the bad science, why new researchers should challenge and look for scientific dogma to discredit it, the huge problem with how research is all treated equally, we’re designed to eat mostly animals but the popular notion is that plants should be first, it’s enormously time-consuming getting bogged down by bad data, how the Dietary Guidelines are the epitome of the ramifications of bad science, the continuing problem with laypeople still being scared of cholesterol levels and turning to statins, the problems with low cholesterol levels, statins will be found to be the greatest medical disaster in the history of medicine, when you criticize the system you’re accused of being a scaremonger, if you ate no cholesterol in your diet then your body would naturally make it, the problem with cancer screening and the harm it is causing, patients like to think they are being protected by getting screened, and how patients can determine the nonsense from the valid information for their health.

Gestational diabetes has become more and more commonplace in modern society with the rise in insulin resistance that manifests itself once a woman becomes pregnant. This is something that doesn’t surprise a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified LEAP Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor named Lily Nichols from The Pilates Nutritionist. Her nutrient-dense, whole foods low-carb approach has helped her patients dealing with this scary situation during pregnancy overcome the major issues at hand. Lily has written a new book about this subject entitled Real Food for Gestational Diabetes: An Effective Alternative to the Conventional Nutrition Approach and it’s the very first time a whole food-based, lower carb diet has been recommended for managing gestational diabetes.

Listen in as Jimmy and Lily talk about why a low-carb diet needs to come from real food, what got her interested in nutrition when she was in high school (cooking school or become a dietitian?), how Pilates has been integrated into her message, how she knew the education she was getting in dietetics was bogus, what got her interested in the subject of gestational diabetes, why most gestational diabetes patients don’t do well on the diet therapy given, why the “random number” of 175 grams of carbohydrates per day is recommended for women with gestational diabetes, how they purposely want to keep pregnant women out of ketosis, why pregnancy naturally induces a state of ketosis, how some women can spill urine ketones even eating 175 grams of carbohydrates, gestational diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance by definition, why some women are more susceptible to gestational diabetes than others, how 50-70% of patients with gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes after birth within 5-10 years, how screening for A1c in the first trimester can catch gestational diabetes, how many gestational diabetes patients go back to eating poorly again after they have their baby, the underlying insulin resistance that doesn’t go away but can be managed with lifestyle, why most doctors aren’t screening for or worried about prediabetes, the horrific low-fat, high-carb traditional gestational diabetes diet, and we’re setting up kids to have excessive insulin production even before they’re born.

The rise of interest in the relationship between gut health and virtually every other aspect of overall health has been quite stark over the past couple of years. And for a Naples, Florida-based board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter (listen to our previous interviews with him in Episode 867, Episode 725, and on Ask The Low-Carb Experts Episode 51), the impact of the microbiome on the brain is indelibly connected. You probably know him well for his focus on the dangers of consuming grains on your brain health with his recent runaway hit books Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers and The Grain Brain Cookbook: More Than 150 Life-Changing Gluten-Free Recipes to Transform Your Health. But now he’s back with a brand new book in 2015 zeroing in on this banding together of gut-brain health entitled Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Perlmutter have a fascinating discussion of how the gut bacteria plays a critical role in brain health, the scientific relationship between poor gut health and issues like depression, mood disorders, and other cognitive disorders, why inflammation and bowel permeability develop in someone with poor gut health, the damaging effects that women having a C-section are putting on the future health of their babies, the devastating impact of overusing antibiotics on the human microbiome that leads to obesity, the key markers to look for demonstrating gut permeability, how fecal transplants can be helpful in treating infections as well as replenishing gut flora that’s been depleted, how reducing carbohydrates and consuming more probiotic foods is critical to reestablishing gut and brain health, why the foods you choose to consume are the biggest factor in revolutionizing brain health through the gut, the kind of fermented foods you should be eating in your low-carb diet, and so much more! If you’re just eating low-carb and thinking that’s enough to make every aspect of your health optimal, then you’ll want to hear what Dr. David Perlmutter has to say about enhancing your low-carb lifestyle to improve your health, especially in the brain, even more!

Ask anyone what it takes to get healthy and very likely their first thought is to lose weight. It seems our culture over the past few decades has begun equating and quantifying health gain almost exclusively through the prism of weight loss. This movement didn’t sit too well for a science writer for The New York Times named Harriet Brown who regularly speaks on topics such as body image, food obsession, and eating disorders. In her research into these topics, she identified where these ideas came from that made having extra body fat the last acceptable form of societal discrimination there is and what can be done to change this mindset hellbent on making weight and health interchangeable. She’s put all of that into a compelling new 2015 book entitled Body of Truth: How Science, History, and Culture Drive Our Obsession with Weight–and What We Can Do about It.

Listen in as Jimmy and Harriet discuss why “fat” has become a four-letter word in our culture, why there is such an obsession about weight where people become desperate to lose it, the people who benefit the most from keeping us fat and telling us we’re unhealthy, the four big lies we’ve been told about weight and health, the role Big Pharma is playing in creating confusion about this issue, the impact these behind-the-scenes shenanigans are having on virtually everyone everyday, why all the fad diets that are being offered as the answer may not be what people want or need, the damage we are causing our bodies by the constant weight fluctuations up and down, the bright side of shifting away from being weight-focused to health-focused, and a whole lot more. If you or someone you love is struggling with thinking their self-worth is found in that number on the scale, this you won’t want to miss what Harriet Brown shares in this compelling and controversial interview today!

The state of modern health is in shambles and everyone knows it. While there is so much attention placed on this diet or that diet as a means of fixing this problem, it’s a much more complicated issue than simply the food you eat. Embracing real food certainly provides you with the proper nutrients your body needs to function optimally, but there are unintended consequences to health when people don’t get certain micronutrients like Vitamin B12 into their body. This has been the passion of nearly three decades of work by a Shelby, Michigan-based ER nurse and paramedic named Sally M. Pacholok, RN (listen to her previous interview sharing about her book Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses on the podcast way back in Episode 411).

Sally herself was diagnosed herself with Vitamin B12 deficiency after doctors failed to properly identify her condition. That’s what started her on a rebellious mission to share with the whole world about the impact this is having on people. What she began to notice over the years of observing patients was a significant lack of this one micronutrient was leading to some rather profound issues with children beginning in the womb and all the way through adolescence and their brain development. That’s why she decided to write a new book in 2015 detailing this unspoken health concern in our kids (and adults too!) entitled What’s Wrong with My Child?: From Neurological and Developmental Disabilities to Autism…How to Protect Your Child from B12 Deficiency where she outlines the symptoms to be on the lookout for and offers up solutions for parents on how to best prevent this from happening in their children. In fact, Sally’s work with Vitamin B12 deficiency has made such a profound impact on the lives of real people that they released a feature film entitled Sally Pacholok about her life story in 2015 (coming soon to theaters–watch the trailer above!).

Listen in as Jimmy and Sally discuss what has been happening in her work since her last appearance on the podcast in 2010, why she decided to focus primarily on children’s health in her new book, why the mainstream medical establishment basically dismisses the Vitamin B12 deficiency connection to disease, the vital importance Vitamin B12 plays on brain development in kids, how Vitamin B12 deficiency may be directly contributing to autism and other issues on the autism spectrum, why an expectant mother needs to have proper Vitamin B12 levels to pass on to her baby, the feature film that was made about her life story, and so much more! We are honored and thrilled to have such an illustrious expert joining us on the show today. Soak this one in and ENJOY!

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR SALLY PACHOLOK THE MOVIE

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR SALLY PACHOLOK THE MOVIE

https://youtu.be/kuiu5_T4zB4
