The greatest nemesis in any given diet plan is hunger. When you are hungry, then your body starts to scream at you to feed it more food by giving you clues like hunger pangs, fatigue, and other such symptoms. But a Harvard-based pediatric endocrinologist, medical school professor, and nutritional health researcher named Dr. David Ludwig (listen to Jimmy’s previous interview with him in Episode 403) from DrDavidLudwig.com would argue that it’s not necessarily the overeating that has made us all fat–instead, it’s getting fat that makes us overeat. This is why we are constantly fighting the desire to consume more and more to try to satisfy that persistent physical cue to eat. It’s the premise of Dr. Ludwig’s brand new New York Times bestselling Always Hungry?: Conquer Cravings, Retrain Your Fat Cells, and Lose Weight Permanently.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Ludwig talk about the methods that help children helps adults too, Dr. Ludwig’s 2012 “calorie is not a calorie” JAMA study, the difference in energy expenditure and weight changes with low-carb vs. low-fat diets, why an isocaloric meal comparison will produce the same weight loss results in the short term, why continuing to cut calories is problematic, the power of hunger signals and why they should not be ignored, Dr. Ludwig’s 2004 fast-acting carbs Lancet study, how the process of getting fat makes you overeat, why insulin is the Miracle Grow for fat cells, why having hunger as a good thing is a “cultural delusion,” whether continuous exposure to refined carbohydrates can make you more sensitive to all carbs, why diet order matters in the effect on your metabolism, the three phases of his plan, the modifications in the plan for people with carb sensitivity, why some people may not see results on his plan, why his plan is not a ketogenic diet, how he works backwards from his approach to Atkins to ketogenic, and how ketones are a very clean fuel for the body.

Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) convenes a panel of experts on nutrition and health called the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to determine the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and they recently announced the latest version in force now through 2020. We’ve been following these guidelines closely hoping they would make major shifts away from the same old failed conventional wisdom that has plagued us since 1980. And when I interviewed investigative journalist Nina Teicholz, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet, about the potential changes in April 2015, she was hopeful that things would be different this time around. But in this exclusive Periscope interview (see all his daily Periscope videos at JimmyScopes.com) our host Jimmy Moore recently conducted with Nina, she shares the full details on what was put into the Dietary Guidelines.

https://vimeo.com/151170536

Listen in as Jimmy and Nina talk about whether the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are based on the latest science, the heavy influence on our culture of these guidelines, Nina’s British Medical Journal article The scientific report guiding the US dietary guidelines: is it scientific?, why they completely ignored the literature supporting the low-carbohydrate diet, the tremendous backlash she got for her BMJ article, the tiny changes that have been made to the new guidelines (limiting added sugars, alcohol and caffeine are now okay, soy milk is now recommended, and the drop on the caps on dietary cholesterol), the new look at dietary patterns instead of macronutrients (although all the science is on macros), why the low-fat diet is dead and nobody knows it, how the actual recommendations are virtually identical what they were back in 2005, Nina’s non-profit group Nutrition Coalition, the National Academy of Medicine review requirements before the 2020 Dietary Guidelines, whether the guidelines will ever get away from the government reigns, the congressional hearing that happened last Fall over these guidelines, why the guidelines are still relevant despite the criticism about them, and the legal strong-arming that is happening against low-carb diets and dietary fat.

NOTE: We apologize for the moments of “noise” during the interview. Andrew used the internal microphone on his computer and he nervously slid it around as he was talking. His story was much too powerful not to share even with these sounds.

The use of ketogenic diets in the treatment of various kinds of cancers has been a hot subject within research circles for the past few years. But it’s the compelling personal stories of individuals with cancer who are in desperate circumstances feeling helpless by the conventional treatment of chemotherapy and other cancer drugs who finally find success in nutritional therapy that makes this worth taking a closer look. Last week we shared the inspiring story of an eye cancer survivor from Dublin, Ireland named Patricia Daly who implemented a ketogenic diet to help her body heal. And today we have an even more miraculous ketogenic cancer success story in a man from London, England named Andrew Scarborough from the “My Brain Cancer Story” blog who was diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer along with epilepsy. But Andrew didn’t let that stop him from researching the metabolic theory of cancer to keep his grim diagnosis at bay.

Listen in as Jimmy and Andrew talk about his graduate schooling in nutrition where he learned about ketogenic diets, the migraines he started dealing with during his master’s training, how doctors dismissed his headaches as stress-induced pain, the progression of his symptoms that first took his speech away, gave him “crushing headaches,” involuntary spasms and pressure in his head, intense pain, and then a life-threatening grand mal seizure causing him to pass out, the slightly larger than a golf ball tumor they found in his brain, why doctors didn’t immediately think it was cancer, the moment they told him that his cancer was incurable, how the doctors missing it put him at greater risk, how long they told him he had to live, how he had already actively took his carbs down and seeking to be in ketosis to control his epilepsy, how Professor Thomas Seyfried‘s book Cancer As A Metabolic Disease helped him understand ketogenic diets for cancer, the side effects he felt taking the medications and chemotherapy before he went full-on ketogenic, why he sees his epilepsy as a blessing, his preference for a non-traditional ketogenic diet, the problem he experiences with the salicylates in plant-based foods, why he is concerned about his IGF-1 levels, the micronutrients that leech out when you take epilepsy medications (including B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin D), the major shifts he made in his diet that are typical of most ketogenic diets, how he made up for the micronutrients he was missing from not eating plant matter, how he got quality organ meats and animal fats from grass-fed animals cheaply, how his neurologists were “flabbergasted” by his success in beating his brain cancer, a typical day of eating for his cancer-fighting ketogenic diet, the hyperbaric chamber therapy he is now using to help continue the healing of his brain, the Ketopet therapy for dogs with cancer funded by Quest Nutrition, the therapeutic level of blood ketones for cancer treatment, whether he uses exogenous sources of ketones, how 90 percent of his diet is fat from mostly fatty insects like wax worms, why he prefers to eat the worms raw now, the fasting protocols he has engaged in since his cancer diagnosis, and his JustGiving fundraising page for brain cancer research.

We’ve been hearing a lot about the health and taste benefits of bone broth in recent years. And it’s a trend we have been actively following here at “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” podcast featuring interviews with people like Dr. Kaayla Daniel and Dr. Kellyann Petrucci talking all about this secret weapon in healthy living. For an organic bone broth company owner named Kate Harvey from BareBonesBroth.com, it’s a passion that drives her and her husband Ryan so much that they take meticulous care to do things the right way in creating quality bone broth from grass-fed and pastured animals. They’ve penned a brand new book of recipes in 2016 incorporating bone broth entitled The Bare Bones Broth Cookbook: 125 Gut-Friendly Recipes to Heal, Strengthen, and Nourish the Body.

Listen in as Jimmy and Kate have a great conversation about how bone broth has become more mainstream, how she discovered Paleo from her now-husband Ryan, how her inflammation disappeared eating Paleo, when bone broth came on her radar screen that she wanted to turn it into a business, the differences between the broth sold in grocery stores and what her company shares, why her bone broth is perishable, how the gelatin in the Bare Bones Broth is so rich and thick, how the protein content of the broth you buy tells you how much collagen is in it, why some manufacturers won’t touch animal bones, how her husband Ryan became frustrated by the restaurant lifestyle, the tremendous influence Pete Servold from Pete’s Paleo had on their e-commerce bone broth business, why she never thought this would grow into a business, why they decided to write a book about bone broth, how most of their customers don’t know what to do with bone broth in the kitchen, how they got connected with Harper Collins to publish their book, the influence Paleo Australian chef Pete Evans had on Jimmy, why you should use bone broth instead of water (even in coffee!), her new smoked pork bone broth, whether they are doing fish bone broth in the future, and how she discovered her dogs love bone broth.
