When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. When you think about the Paleo movement these days, so many great names come to mind–Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, and more. But two decades ago, there were very few people sharing about how our ancestors ate and lived in pursuing and maintaining optimal health. It was the very infancy of the modern Paleolithic diet advocacy with names like Dr. Boyd Eaton, Dr. Mike Eades, and Dr. Loren Cordain. When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. You may recognize his name as one of the two co-founders (with Brent Pottenger) of the annual Ancestral Health Symposium Paleo conference and he’s been conducting some pretty fascinating research with lab rats in recent years, including this fascinating April 2014 study published in Physiology & Behavior looking at the role a low-fat, junk food diet plays on obesity and cognitive function. Sleep (along with stress) is perhaps one of the biggest non-dietary factors that plays such an instrumental part in the weight and health success or failure that people tend to have. If you get an adequate amount of restful, rejuvenating sleep in bed at night, then your health will be rewarded for giving it what it wants. When you think about the Paleo movement these days, so many great names come to mind–Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, and more. But two decades ago, there were very few people sharing about how our ancestors ate and lived in pursuing and maintaining optimal health. It was the very infancy of the modern Paleolithic diet advocacy with names like Dr. Boyd Eaton, Dr. Mike Eades, and Dr. Loren Cordain. But one man who helped merge the message of Paleo with low-carb, high-fat diets was a self-professed “computer nerd” named Ray Audette who researched and studied the Paleo lifestyle to help him with his own health issues which all got considerably better once he made the switch over to a concept he refers to in the title of his book about it called Neanderthin: Eat Like a Caveman to Achieve a Lean, Strong, Healthy Body. This is now considered a classic Paleo book and the Kindle version is now available with new information if you have never read it before.

When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. You may recognize his name as one of the two co-founders (with Brent Pottenger) of the annual Ancestral Health Symposium Paleo conference and he’s been conducting some pretty fascinating research with lab rats in recent years, including this fascinating April 2014 study published in Physiology & Behavior looking at the role a low-fat, junk food diet plays on obesity and cognitive function. In fact, Dr. Blaisdell gave a lecture about his research at the 2014 Ancestral Health Symposium (#AHS14) entitled Functional Frivolity: Human Brain Evolution and Play (watch the lecture below).
