One of the biggest cultural phenomenons over the past decade has been the advent of weight loss reality television shows like The Biggest Loser. The images of morbidly obese contestants running on treadmills and eating healthy are meant to inspire and give hope to a nation of people wanting to lose weight. But for one of the former contestants on the show, what goes on behind-the-scenes of the highly-profitable television show is utterly disgusting. Her name is Kai Hibbard and you might remember her as the runner-up winner in Season 3. But she was so mortified at the way the contestants were treated by the trainers and producers that she decided to speak out against the public fat shaming they not only allowed but encouraged.

Listen in as Jimmy and Kai have a stunning chat about how she never had an issue with her weight growing up, how she was always active although she was getting bigger, how she had never seen The Biggest Loser before she was chosen to be a contestant, how she never let her size get in the way she felt about herself, how being on television taught her to start loathing her body, why she doesn’t think the show is about being an inspiration, the crazy tactics people did to produce weight loss, how they kept putting her face on their products years after she was off the show, the lack of after show aftercare with former contestants, the challenge on her season where she was put on a horse track starting in the livestock stall that she believes was fat shaming by the producers, why shaming people doesn’t work to motivate people, how social media is leading the charge at combatting fat shaming at the grassroots level, her concerns with Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel campaign, why what people eat and how they look are nobody else’s business, how she became very ill on the show and was told to suck it up and exercise anyway, how the product sponsorships pushed low-fat, high-carb Frankenfoods on the contestants, how she eats a real foods-based Paleoish diet, how she has to be careful of too structured eating lest she falls back into the habits she learned on the show, the health issues she dealt with as a result of being on The Biggest Loser, how she never had thyroid issues before being on the show but still deals with it, the weight relapses she has had over the years since being on the show, the self-care choices she made to take care of herself, and the other former contestants that have now come forward to join her speaking out against fat shaming.

One of the premier annual conferences in the Paleo community that has only been around since 2012 is the Austin, Texas-based Paleo f(x) event. This year’s gathering took place a couple of weeks back on April 25-27, 2015 and our host Jimmy Moore participated as a moderator, panelist, and lecturer. To give you the listeners a glimpse into what went down at #PFX15, we’ve invited on three people from the low-carb community who were in attendance at the conference–Swedish family medicine doctor and low-carb blogger Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt from “Diet Doctor”, Scottish ketogenic nutritionist Emily Maguire from “Low Carb Genesis”, and board-certified licensed Physician Assistant Erynn Kay at “Denver’s Diet Doctor”.

Listen in as Andreas, Emily, Erynn and I talk about Andreas’ experience attending Paleo f(x) for the first time, how Emily appreciated seeing the variety of products available for Paleo consumers, the observation by Erynn about how big Paleo f(x) has gotten and how the scientific presentations have become more scholarly, Andreas’ concerns about the products that were featured at the event, why the Paleo community should look out for these inferior products lest people don’t improve their health, the skin product vendors who were doing things the right way with real food, natural ingredients, how the mainstream Paleo movement seems to be trying to move away from the low-carb message now, Paleo could be a force for good in people with obesity and diabetes if they supported low-carb, why Andreas thought the “why ketogenic diets are dangerous” lecture by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne was the best talk at the conference but a bit “over the top,” why a ketogenic diet should be used strategically for the right client or patient within a Paleo template, why it’s so surprising that there is such friction between the Paleo and low-carb community, why you don’t really attend Paleo f(x) necessarily to hear all the talks (because you can’t), the most memorable talks and experiences from this year’s conference, how the video presentations will be online later, the diamond in the rough talks that were surprising, the varying levels of talks available at the conference, why low-carbers need to “just go” and see what Paleo f(x) is all about, many of the attendees are actually quite low-carb in their nutritional approach, how the Paleo and low-carb communities could learn a lot from each other and remove the barriers working together, the enthusiasm of so many new people coming into Paleo, and how the low-carb community can leave their own footprint on Paleo.

The gateway into finding Paleo for most people is as a direct result of dealing with some form of chronic health problem. For Jenni Hulet from “The Urban Poser” blog, her life was turned upside down in 2010 when she went from being an active mother, yoga teacher, and chef to being unable to get out of bed because of uncontrollable pain and muscle spasms. After months of unproductive doctor visits going through the conventional medicine route, she began to fear that all her creative pursuits were over and that she would have to resign herself to a life of pain management. Eventually, a doctor was able to identify an emerging autoimmune condition that, though devastating, could be fully recovered through changes in her nutrition and lifestyle. Jenni was diagnosed as severely gluten and casein intolerant and was put on a strict diet and supplement regimen to heal her ravaged body.

The process of facing down her worst fears and walking a lengthy path of recovery inspired a new expression for Jenni’s passion: to bring beauty, flavor, and freedom to those struggling with the fear and difficulty of living with health restrictions. It was out of this vision that her blog was born which perfectly marries her culinary skills and love of beautiful, celebratory food with her compassion for the suffering. Jenni was given the opportunity write a book in 2015 about her amazing story and the baking recipes she loves sharing with her readers called My Paleo Patisserie: An Artisan Approach to Grain Free Baking.

Listen in as Jimmy and Jenni have a great conversation about her rock star status on Instagram, autoimmune health issues including her mother’s own multiple sclerosis, how teaching yoga overworked her body, the spasms she experienced all over her body, the medical doctor who finally figured out her underlying issue, the natural health doctor who immediately understood she was dealing with an autoimmune issue, the failure of traditional medicine, how she was Paleo before she knew what it was, her background in baking, the chicken pot pie recipe she shared on “The Paleo Parents” blog, the loving and supportive community in Paleo, why she feels Paleo treats and desserts are perfectly fine in the right circumstance, how using the term “Paleo” is a good catch-all for all the things she is about, her belief that food is so much more than just nourishment and health, why she says her book is about creating traditions and experiences with your family, why she doesn’t do Paleo breads at all, the pans she used for the front cover bundt cakes are rare pans, how her blog was originally about yoga and veganism, and how she lost so many readers and got ugly hate mail when she shifted to Paleo.

There are so many complex issues in the realm of health that it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with it all. That’s why we try to find experts who can explain these sorts of ideas in language that makes sense to the layperson. Today’s interview guest is certainly one of those–Dr. Tim Jackson from HealYourBody.org. He is a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) who quickly realized his training was limited in truly helping improve the health of the patients he was seeing. That’s when he started studying functional medicine looking into digestive health, nutrition, and functional endocrinology which all remain a strong passion.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Jackson discuss how he committed to exercise while in college and found benefits, the jaw surgery he had in college for an underbite that he now regrets, the various infections he learned he had that helped restore his health, how people are thrown into surgeries without much screening, his experience in physical therapy where he uses supplements to help clients, how he tries to find the “biggest health rocks,” the flaws in the CDSA test that cultures the bugs compared with the PCR test (from Metametrics) in the DNA for measuring gut health, artificial sweeteners are killing the bacteria in the gut, whether or not there is scientific data that state very low-carb diets are harmful to gut health, how stress takes away from your ability to digest, the nutritional and lifestyle ways to heal the damage to the gut, if you have an infection you need to use antimicrobials, herbs, and maybe medications to remove it, the impact that mold toxicity has on gut health and overall health, how to determine the species of mold you have in your home using the ERMI and HERTSMI-2 tests, the HLA-DR mold genotype that makes some people hypersensitive to mold while others aren’t impacted at all, the epigenetics vs. genetics debate, the biochemical hiccup that can impact your immunity, detoxification, and hormones, the MTHFR enzyme that plays a role in the use of folic acid, how exposure to EMFs from wi-fi can be as toxic to your cells as mold, and more!
