Self-experimentation when it comes to the subject of nutrition and health is an absolute must. The quantified self movement is growing by leaps and bounds because patients are so fed up with the failure of the current model for healthy living being used by conventional medicine that they’ve grabbed back control of their own health and doing their own n=1 experiments to test how their body responds to any given stimuli. But today’s podcast interview guest isn’t just some patient–he was traditionally trained in medical school and has been treating patients himself as their medical doctor. His name is Dr. Spencer Nadolsky (listen to his previous interview on the show in Episode 552), an osteopath and obesity medicine specialist in Virginia, who decided to test the controversial dietary waters by shifting his meals over from low-carb to high-carb to see what would happen.

Have your Chocolate and Eat it Too!

Listen in to hear Dr. Nadolsky and I discuss his recent bodybuilding show, how his testosterone went to pot doing the competition, why counting macronutrients and calories were a critical element in helping him reach his body composition goals while maintaining excellent metabolic health, why he no longer worries about his macronutrients and calories anymore, how a lower-carb, higher-fat diet tends to help him keep his calories in check best, his foray into wanting to experiment with a high-carb diet to see what would happen, the reaction he received from the low-carb community to his n=1, why cravings and hunger are under control very well despite how palatable the food is on a low-carb, high-fat diet, what his experience has been with intermittent fasting, why some people thrive and others don’t do as well fasting, why he’s still eating 200-300g of carbohydrates because he’s doing well right now, how his LDL particles dropped dramatically when he cut the fat in his diet, what happened to his thyroid eating higher-carb (and his problem with people who talk bad about low-carb diets negatively impacting thyroid), how he wants to “have a baby” again doing another bodybuilding show, why he’s not personally a fan of using calorie-tracking websites like FitDay, what his diet looks like nowadays, how he was laughing at a vegan doctor who was mocking meat-eaters on Facebook, why the diet wars online are just silly, how he’s become enamored by lipidology, and a whole lot more. It’s an interesting chat about keeping an open mind and never getting too dogmatic about what you believe regarding nutritional health. ENJOY!

In this day and age of instant information at your fingertips with the click of a mouse searching the Internet on virtually any topic you want to learn more about, it can be a bit daunting trying to sift through it all to know what to believe about any given subject. The challenge in the world of diet, fitness, and health is the fact that there are so many cultural norms that people simply believe at face value that have never been proven by any research–and yet people buy into them hook, line, and sinker. This doesn’t sit well with a nutrition and fitness expert named Mike Sheridan who believes the public deserves to hear the truth about what we REALLY know about nutrition rather than the propaganda that has been put out there in the mainstream of our culture regarding this subject. He does this regularly through his Huffington Post columns. Additionally, he’s written a couple of books that take on the common wisdom on diet and fitness and turn them on their head with Eat Meat And Stop Jogging: ‘Common’ Advice On How To Get Fit Is Keeping You Fat And Making You Sick and Live It, NOT Diet!: Forget Cardio. Forget Calories.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Mike have an in-depth conversation about how he learned about low-carb as a high school football player, why elite athletes are starting to embrace low-carb and ketogenic diets, how the parents of young student athletes are the major roadblock in making low-carb, high-fat nutritional changes, the challenge he faces trying to buck the trend of the right diet for athletics, the role of saturated fat in the diet in keeping us sated and free from cravings, what it will take to bring about cultural change regarding nutrition, the obsession about calories and fat in our health culture, why carbohydrates really aren’t necessary for human health, the nonsensical nature of the calories in/calories out message, how people are causing more harm than good engaging in cardio exercise, his passion for helping people realize how easy it is to get and stay fit, why he believes conventional wisdom has people “overworked and underfed,” and his driving philosophy to enjoy what he is doing so that it never feels like work. You’ll get to hear all of this and a whole lot more in today’s fun and encouraging interview!

878: Dr. Aaron Blaisdell Researches The Mental Health Impact Of Junk Food

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 8.25.01 PM

Biological anthropologist, professor of psychology, and brain health researcher Dr. Aaron Blaisdell is our interview guest today in Episode 878 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

When Gary Taubes released his seminal nutritional health book Good Calories Bad Calories in 2007, no doubt he couldn’t have imagined at the time just how many people from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds would be influenced by his work. One such person who was influenced by Taubes is an associate professor of psychology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a participating member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute named Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. You may recognize his name as one of the two co-founders (with Brent Pottenger) of the annual Ancestral Health Symposium Paleo conference and he’s been conducting some pretty fascinating research with lab rats in recent years, including this fascinating April 2014 study published in Physiology & Behavior looking at the role a low-fat, junk food diet plays on obesity and cognitive function. In fact, Dr. Blaisdell gave a lecture about his research at the 2014 Ancestral Health Symposium (#AHS14) entitled Functional Frivolity: Human Brain Evolution and Play (watch the lecture below).

DR. AARON BLAISDELL’S #AHS14 LECTURE

Functional Frivolity: Human Brain Evolution and Play

Listen in as Dr. Blaisdell and I share about how Taubes was a major influence on his interest in nutrition and health, his research using lab mice to examine the mental and brain health impact that diet plays, how the late Seth Roberts got him interested in ancestral health, the variety of venues that have been used for the Ancestral Health Symposium, why modern schooling isn’t serving children well to make them into productive adults, how technology is changing the way our mind and environment operate from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, the reason why he thinks “ancestral” is a more complete term to use to describe the healthy lifestyle currently promoted as “Paleo,” the ketosis vs. pro-carbohydrates rift happening in the ancestral health community, where he see the ancestral health message going in the coming years, full details on the results of his latest rat experiments, the development of a new website dedicated to crowd sourcing n=1 experiments all in one place, and so much more! It’s a fabulous conversation between two of the leading voices in the ancestral health community.

There are so many amazing voices out there trumpeting the cause of real food in helping people improve their health in ways they never thought would be possible without the medications and procedures that modern medicine has said is the inevitable path. And today’s interview guest knows this a bit more than most having been raised on a large Mennonite farm with honeybees, oranges, cattle, pigs, sheep and fresh fruits and vegetables from their homemade garden. She is a Chico, CA-based chiropractor and nutritional wellness practitioner named Dr. Deborah Penner from Whole Food Medicine and Chico Creek Wellness And Chiropractic. Jimmy met her in person a couple of months back at the Ancestral Health Symposium in Berkeley, California where she shared her passion for teaching, preaching, and sharing as much information about a whole foods, low-carb, ketogenic diet with fantastic results. Recently, she has been conducting keto-adaptation food groups with fantastic results, including producing weight loss when people got stuck, resolution of migraine headaches, and diabetics who were taking insulin no longer having to do that anymore.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Penner talk about how she was able to find robust health in her mid-50’s, why Whole Foods is in a dispute with her over her new name, how she evolved from recommending whole grains to no grains to high-protein and now ketosis, why all of her patients are given a blood glucose meter and ketone testing sticks to check their progress at home, how quickly changes begin to happen in her patients, some important aspects to getting keto-adapted that nobody talks about, how she helps people with a compromised biliary tract or no gallbladder get into ketosis, why shifting macronutrients alone may or may not be enough, her focus on nutrient-dense, high-fat foods to produce therapeutic ketones, her detox program that helps make adapting to the ketogenic diet easier, and so much more! Dr. Penner is one of the champions of low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic living working on the front lines of changing lives one patient at a time.

ENJOY!

880: Dr. Spencer Nadolsky Does His Own Low-Carb To High-Carb N=1 Experiment

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 10.25.51 AM

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and medical bariatrician Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is our interview guest today in Episode 880 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

880: Dr. Spencer Nadolsky Does His Own Low-Carb To High-Carb N=1 Experiment

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 10.25.51 AM

880: Dr. Spencer Nadolsky Does His Own Low-Carb To High-Carb N=1 Experiment

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 10.25.51 AM

When your work is lauded and endorsed by two such highly respected giants in the health community like Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly, and Dr. David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain, then you must be doing something right. For today’s podcast interview guest Brenda Watson, that must mean she’s doing something VERY right. She has dedicated her career for over 20 years to helping people achieve vibrant, lasting health through improved digestive function. You may have even seen her on several PBS specials educating the public through enthusiastic lectures as she has established herself as one of the foremost authorities in America on optimum nutrition, digestion, and natural detoxification methods. Brenda has written a total of eight previous books related to gut health and will be releasing her latest on October 7, 2014 entitled The Skinny Gut Diet: Balance Your Digestive System for Permanent Weight Loss.

Listen in as Jimmy and Brenda discuss the details of what she shares in her new book on one of the hottest topics in the health community, some of the latest research related to the connection between the microbiome and obesity, why the gut bacteria of lean people and overweight people are so radically different, the intricate role that carbohydrates play in the body turning into sugar ad disrupting the balance gut bacteria, her reaction to the rise in interest in resistant starch and whether she thinks it’s an effective way to feed the gut flora, how people can safely shift the foods they eat to improve the bacterial composition, and so much more. Everyone is keenly interested in this subject of gut health nowadays and Brenda Watson has been at this for nearly two decades researching it and finding what works for her clients. Listen and soak in her wisdom!
