Today we have perhaps one of the most unique podcasts we’ve ever shared with you in a conversation featuring a Baltimore, Maryland-based woman named Sara Keough. She is a recent graduate with her Master’s Degree in Integrative Nutrition and, more importantly, she has struggled with food addiction and bulimia for nearly 20 years. Jimmy met Sara on the flight back to the United States from the LCHF conference that took place in Cape Town, South Africa in February. After hearing her harrowing story of struggle with binge eating and purging, Jimmy knew he needed to share this with his listeners today to help others who have become frustrated by the way eating disorders are viewed by mainstream medicine.

Listen in as Jimmy and Sara talk about her education in nutrition and integrative health, her early interest in ketogenic diets, when she first started purging at the age of 12, how she struggled with a strong carbohydrate and sugar addiction, how the ketogenic diet helped her improve her eating disorder for longer than anything else she’d ever tried, her experience going to see doctors at Johns Hopkins to get help for her bulimia, the denial by the doctors there that she had an eating disorder, their reaction to her low-carb, high-fat diet, their decision to offer her Prozac to help with her mood issues (which she denied), why they didn’t offer up a specific diet for her to follow and told her to try not to purge, the horrible food choices they recommended she try (pancakes, really?), and her continuing struggle to deal with this condition. At the end of the interview, Jimmy put out a call to anyone who would like to help Sara in her ongoing battle with bulimia. If you can help, then please send an email to livinlowcarbman@charter.net.

One of the premier annual conferences in the Paleo community that has only been around since 2012 is the Austin, Texas-based Paleo f(x) event. This year’s gathering took place a couple of weeks back on April 25-27, 2015 and our host Jimmy Moore participated as a moderator, panelist, and lecturer. To give you the listeners a glimpse into what went down at #PFX15, we’ve invited on three people from the low-carb community who were in attendance at the conference–Swedish family medicine doctor and low-carb blogger Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt from “Diet Doctor”, Scottish ketogenic nutritionist Emily Maguire from “Low Carb Genesis”, and board-certified licensed Physician Assistant Erynn Kay at “Denver’s Diet Doctor”.

Listen in as Andreas, Emily, Erynn and I talk about Andreas’ experience attending Paleo f(x) for the first time, how Emily appreciated seeing the variety of products available for Paleo consumers, the observation by Erynn about how big Paleo f(x) has gotten and how the scientific presentations have become more scholarly, Andreas’ concerns about the products that were featured at the event, why the Paleo community should look out for these inferior products lest people don’t improve their health, the skin product vendors who were doing things the right way with real food, natural ingredients, how the mainstream Paleo movement seems to be trying to move away from the low-carb message now, Paleo could be a force for good in people with obesity and diabetes if they supported low-carb, why Andreas thought the “why ketogenic diets are dangerous” lecture by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne was the best talk at the conference but a bit “over the top,” why a ketogenic diet should be used strategically for the right client or patient within a Paleo template, why it’s so surprising that there is such friction between the Paleo and low-carb community, why you don’t really attend Paleo f(x) necessarily to hear all the talks (because you can’t), the most memorable talks and experiences from this year’s conference, how the video presentations will be online later, the diamond in the rough talks that were surprising, the varying levels of talks available at the conference, why low-carbers need to “just go” and see what Paleo f(x) is all about, many of the attendees are actually quite low-carb in their nutritional approach, how the Paleo and low-carb communities could learn a lot from each other and remove the barriers working together, the enthusiasm of so many new people coming into Paleo, and how the low-carb community can leave their own footprint on Paleo.

We live in an incredibly strange world these days when the food supply has become so bastardized that we have to use a qualifier like “real” to describe what we mean by the word “food.” But it’s undeniable that the further and further away from real food we have gotten over the past few decades, the more and more obesity and chronic disease has taken hold impacting tens of millions of people worldwide. This is something that has become greatly concerning to a Brisbane, Australia-based consumer health advocate named David Gillespie (listen to Jimmy’s previous interviews with David on the podcast in Episode 761, Episode 592, and Episode 219).

David has watched how the food companies have devised a clever plan to replace the most expensive real food ingredients with cheaper, industrialized foods comprised of mainly sugar, vegetable oils, and processed grains and promote them to the public as healthy with the blessing of the major health organizations. He’s written a brand new book about this topic entitled Eat Real Food: The Only Solution To Permanent Weight-Loss And Disease Prevention (currently only available in paper form in Australia, but the e-book version is available for download in the United States). Listen in as Jimmy and David have a compelling conversation about how the food supply has become changed so radically and what we can do to turn things around by switching back to real food again for the sake of our weight and health.

Beef has been under assault in recent years as a primary culprit in both global warming and health decline. But the only problem with these public perceptions of cattle is that they are dead wrong. For an environmental lawyer turned rancher named Nicolette Hahn Niman, who just happens to be a longtime vegetarian, says none of the arguments made against red meat from an environmental or public health perspective are valid. She’s written a new book about it called Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production to make a compelling argument for responding to these charges against meat.

Listen in as Jimmy and Nicolette talk about why people believe cattle are bad for the Earth and their health, how livestock actually contribute to the ecosystem making the land better off, why small-scale farms producing grass-fed meats can and should become the primary basis for the American food supply, how factory farming has caused damage to animal, the environment, and the humans that consume the meats produced by them, why none of the claims about beef on health have been shown to be true, how the popular notion that it takes more water to create a pound of meat is just plain wrong, how the human diet has changed so radically in just the past century, and how real sustainability in the food supply is the wave of the future of human survival.

The rise of interest in the relationship between gut health and virtually every other aspect of overall health has been quite stark over the past couple of years. And for a Naples, Florida-based board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter (listen to our previous interviews with him in Episode 867, Episode 725, and on Ask The Low-Carb Experts Episode 51), the impact of the microbiome on the brain is indelibly connected. You probably know him well for his focus on the dangers of consuming grains on your brain health with his recent runaway hit books Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers and The Grain Brain Cookbook: More Than 150 Life-Changing Gluten-Free Recipes to Transform Your Health. But now he’s back with a brand new book in 2015 zeroing in on this banding together of gut-brain health entitled Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Perlmutter have a fascinating discussion of how the gut bacteria plays a critical role in brain health, the scientific relationship between poor gut health and issues like depression, mood disorders, and other cognitive disorders, why inflammation and bowel permeability develop in someone with poor gut health, the damaging effects that women having a C-section are putting on the future health of their babies, the devastating impact of overusing antibiotics on the human microbiome that leads to obesity, the key markers to look for demonstrating gut permeability, how fecal transplants can be helpful in treating infections as well as replenishing gut flora that’s been depleted, how reducing carbohydrates and consuming more probiotic foods is critical to reestablishing gut and brain health, why the foods you choose to consume are the biggest factor in revolutionizing brain health through the gut, the kind of fermented foods you should be eating in your low-carb diet, and so much more! If you’re just eating low-carb and thinking that’s enough to make every aspect of your health optimal, then you’ll want to hear what Dr. David Perlmutter has to say about enhancing your low-carb lifestyle to improve your health, especially in the brain, even more!

955: Nicolette Hahn Niman Has Dedicated Her Life To Defending Sustainable Beef
