The current state of nutritional health research is in shambles. With all the medical advice that’s being given to patients that seems to go back and forth saying one thing is for you one day and then turning right around and stating that same thing is suddenly bad for you, what is a patient to believe? For a Scottish general practitioner named Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, he’s been observing the games that are played with the research and stands up against the way Big Medicine is manipulating the studies towards things that make the most money and not necessarily the actions that will improve the health of patients. Dr. Kendrick has released a new book about this subject entitled Doctoring Data: How to sort out medical advice from medical nonsense.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kendrick discuss his skepticism about how the state of scientific research is a “crock,” why the bad science has been so successful at penetrating the culture, how old ideas tend to die very hard, the simple narrative that makes people understand (even if it’s wrong), how it’s so difficult for the layperson to decipher the good from the bad science, why new researchers should challenge and look for scientific dogma to discredit it, the huge problem with how research is all treated equally, we’re designed to eat mostly animals but the popular notion is that plants should be first, it’s enormously time-consuming getting bogged down by bad data, how the Dietary Guidelines are the epitome of the ramifications of bad science, the continuing problem with laypeople still being scared of cholesterol levels and turning to statins, the problems with low cholesterol levels, statins will be found to be the greatest medical disaster in the history of medicine, when you criticize the system you’re accused of being a scaremonger, if you ate no cholesterol in your diet then your body would naturally make it, the problem with cancer screening and the harm it is causing, patients like to think they are being protected by getting screened, and how patients can determine the nonsense from the valid information for their health.

Gestational diabetes has become more and more commonplace in modern society with the rise in insulin resistance that manifests itself once a woman becomes pregnant. This is something that doesn’t surprise a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified LEAP Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor named Lily Nichols from The Pilates Nutritionist. Her nutrient-dense, whole foods low-carb approach has helped her patients dealing with this scary situation during pregnancy overcome the major issues at hand. Lily has written a new book about this subject entitled Real Food for Gestational Diabetes: An Effective Alternative to the Conventional Nutrition Approach and it’s the very first time a whole food-based, lower carb diet has been recommended for managing gestational diabetes.

Listen in as Jimmy and Lily talk about why a low-carb diet needs to come from real food, what got her interested in nutrition when she was in high school (cooking school or become a dietitian?), how Pilates has been integrated into her message, how she knew the education she was getting in dietetics was bogus, what got her interested in the subject of gestational diabetes, why most gestational diabetes patients don’t do well on the diet therapy given, why the “random number” of 175 grams of carbohydrates per day is recommended for women with gestational diabetes, how they purposely want to keep pregnant women out of ketosis, why pregnancy naturally induces a state of ketosis, how some women can spill urine ketones even eating 175 grams of carbohydrates, gestational diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance by definition, why some women are more susceptible to gestational diabetes than others, how 50-70% of patients with gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes after birth within 5-10 years, how screening for A1c in the first trimester can catch gestational diabetes, how many gestational diabetes patients go back to eating poorly again after they have their baby, the underlying insulin resistance that doesn’t go away but can be managed with lifestyle, why most doctors aren’t screening for or worried about prediabetes, the horrific low-fat, high-carb traditional gestational diabetes diet, and we’re setting up kids to have excessive insulin production even before they’re born.

Interest in functional medicine is on the rise as more and more patients are becoming frustrated by the lack of answers from conventional medicine. For an Ottawa, Ontario-based naturopath, chiropractor, and health podcaster named Dr. Carri Drzyzga, she sees functional medicine as the future of mainstream healthcare. Dr. Carri helps her patients at Functional Medicine Ontario and communicates alternative health messages through her popular “The Functional Medicine Doc” podcast. She has seen so many patients dealing with the same issues regarding energy and fatigue that she wrote a book about it entitled Reclaim Your Energy and Feel Normal Again! Fixing the Root Cause of Your Fatigue With Natural Treatments.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Carri discuss how functional medicine looks for the root cause of disease, how the issue of fatigue is totally missed by conventional medicine, why mainstream medicine isn’t doing what functional medicine doctors are doing, why patients are turning to functional medicine more and more, why she didn’t want to be a medical doctor or nurse (STRESS!), how she discovered chiropractic, the frustration she experienced seeing certain patients not get better, her desire to see them get better pushed her back into school to learn functional medicine, why people think their adrenals are burnt out, why fatigue is so much more than about adrenal function, the role thyroid health plays in fatigue, the role vitamin D deficiency plays in health, the woefully inept low levels of vitamin D recommendations, when you’re deficient in vitamin D it’s like your body is in hibernation mode, why we weren’t designed to live inside a box all day, the key role magnesium plays in the body (and how you can know you have gotten too much), why adding in the calcium into your supplementation can be problematic, the chronic deficiency of vitamin B12 she sees in her patients, the symptoms you’ll have not having enough vitamin B12, why vegans and vegetarians are chronically low in vitamin B12, the psychology of fatigue, the four major brain chemicals, how blood sugar imbalance is fueling fatigue (and why a ketogenic diet can help), the role of stress and sleep plays in health even when diet and fitness is perfect, why being “tired and wired” is a sign of high cortisol levels, the strategies she recommends to help destress, and the book The Slight Edge that taught her about reaching your goals.

We have a serious problem with the way we look at and treat people with Type 2 diabetes around the world. This is of great concern to a nephrologist and nutritional health practitioner with a focus on diabetes named Dr. Jason Fung. He’s from Intensive Dietary Management in Scarborough, Ontario where patients are put through various protocols to help them control their disease naturally and without the knee-jerk need for medications. Dr. Fung has shared some very enlightening video lectures on YouTube (see below) where he makes the case that you can reverse diabetes through nutritional protocols to get to the root of the insulin resistance that causes it. He’s a big believer that it’s not about controlling blood sugar, but rather insulin levels.

How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally

The Two Big Lies of Type 2 Diabetes

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Fung share why he decided to study nephrology, how he noticed Type 2 diabetes and kidney disease went hand in hand, why the positive low-carb research was shocking to him (because it showed just the opposite of what everyone thought), why you have to treat patients with kidney disease ten years before the disease manifests to reverse the diabetes, why saying that diabetes can be reversed or cured makes you look like a quack, the absurdity of going back to your old diet again after fixing the underlying insulin resistance, why all the focus of controlling Type 2 diabetes being placed on weight loss is wrong, we shouldn’t treat high blood sugars (the symptom) but rather the insulin resistance (the cause), why giving more insulin in diabetics is like giving alcoholics more alcohol, why treating Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with the same treatment is misguided, the two big lies being told to people with Type 2 diabetes, the doctors who support the American Diabetes Association can’t face the cognitive dissonance that they’re wrong, why he can get half of his patients completely off insulin for good, why the low-carb message isn’t embraced more with so many patients doing well on it, and his upcoming video series on intermittent fasting. Don’t miss this compelling conversation!

There’s this common perception in the athletic world that in order to fuel your exercise performance, you must load up on high amounts of carbohydrates. But in recent years, a new trend has emerged where long-distance runners are turning to a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet to give them a longer, more steady source of energy during their races. We previously shared an interview with Western States 100-mile Endurance Run record holder Timothy Allen Olson in 2013 discussing how switching to an LCHF approach improved his race-day symptoms and endurance issues. Today we present another ultra marathon runner named Zach Bitter who has competed in 24 events and holds the 12 Hour World Record, 100 mile American Record, and 200k American Record. Additionally, he’s a two time National Champion (50 mile road 2012, and 100k road 2014) as well as a member of USA’s 2014 100k World Championship Team, which won gold in Doha, Qatar and placed 6th overall.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Zach discuss how we was always active growing up, why ultra running became appealing to him, his old 60-70% carbohydrate endurance diet prior to discovering LCHF, the negative things he noticed in his health, including sleep, water retention, and gut health issues, the positive changes he saw when he shifted to a more ketogenic approach, what his keto-adaptation period was like, how he was used to running in a fasted state during his training prior to going full-on ketogenic, how his macronutrient ratio shifted from pre-LCHF to now, how he never really ate a lot of bread in his diet, what he says to people who believe a high-carb, grain-free approach would give him good results, why he loves using coconut-based products as his primary source of fat, the perception that people think he’s eating meat non-stop (but he doesn’t because it’s too much protein), his testing at Dr. Jeff Volek’s lab helping him fine-tune his diet, how your macronutrient intake will likely change the longer your body becomes used to being fat-adapted, the wide variability of carbohydrate intake according to the individual, how improving his sleep and other lifestyle factors helped improve his performance, how his cholesterol markers all markedly improved eating LCHF, how much his inflammation levels have come done, what race day looks like for him in his diet, the wasp extract from the VESPA Power Products company that he uses for endurance over long distances (a ketone booster!), why he doesn’t really use much gels during races anymore, the banana chips cooked in coconut oil that help him keep good fats and a bit of carbohydrates for fuel, whether he’s ever used other exogenous sources of ketones like ketone esters, how to find the right balance of fat and carbohydrates that enable an endurance athlete to compete well, why running faster races like a 5k doesn’t necessarily mean needing higher carb consumption, and a whole lot more. If you are someone interested in the relationship between low-carb nutrition and endurance races, then you won’t want to miss what Zach has to share in this interview.

945: Dr. Jason Fung Exposes Two Big Lies And How To Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

Ontario, Canada-based nephrologist, weight loss, and diabetes health expert Dr. Jason Fung is our guest today in Episode 945 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
