Food awareness is on the rise as more and more people are reconnecting with real food again. But with all the confusing terms like organic, natural, and grass-fed, how do you know if you are really getting the best possible quality food to feed yourself and your family? When it comes to purchasing a cow from a local farmer, there are certain things to look out for to know if they are doing things the right way. That’s why we invited on a grass-fed cattle rancher from Braintree, Massachusetts named Joanie Walker from Walker Farm at Whorltleberry Hill. She knows the games that many farmers try to play with consumers pretending to provide quality meats for them to eat and is here today to provide her expert tips for buying grass-fed beef.

Listen in as Jimmy and Joanie talk about how she got interested in getting a cow many years ago that led to many cows, why she wanted to feed her customers like she wanted to eat, how grass-fed providers can cut corners, why she doesn’t ship her meat through the mail, the shocking ingredients used to feed cattle under the guise of “grass,” how to look for people who are certified grass-fed, how to look for cattle that has been fed GMO hay and corn, be aware of the human waste fertilizer (a ton of crap!) sold to farmers, why you’ve got to vet your farmer, why the “no growth hormones” doesn’t mean no hormones, how the color of your grass-fed beef can help you determine the quality, why the grass-fed beef burgers at Carl’s Jr. is from Australia and that’s not good, the farmer can help you cook grass-fed beef properly, how different cows have a variety of tastes to them, why calling a cow “angus” merely means it’s 50% black, why you should pay attention to how the farmer treats you to know how they treat their animals, how a bellowing cow is a sign of adrenaline which makes tough meat, how the USDA measures the grade of a cow from the marbling, why she doesn’t get “certified organic” (although she does all the organic protocols), and how people can find a quality cattle rancher in their area.

As more and more people begin to become aware of the food they are eating, they are becoming reconnected with exactly what they are putting in their mouth. For an award-winning television producer named Jared Stone, who won an Emmy in 2013 for his work on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he forced himself to come face-to-face with this question by committing to buying a whole cow directly from a local rancher and feeding himself and his family on it. Along the way of this wild experiment, Jared got back in touch with what real food is again and rekindled a deep love and passion for everything he is eating. He chronicled the entire experience in a fascinating new book entitled Year of the Cow: How 420 Pounds of Beef Built a Better Life for One American Family.

Listen in as Jimmy and Jared talk about how watching a television show on food made him realize how disconnected from his food he had become, how he decided on the kind of quality cow to purchase, why he believes we need more information about where our food is from, how people used to eat butter regularly, his experience making his own butter, the deceptive marketing of margarine, what the public is so afraid of in embracing real food, how he breaks free from the food system with a backyard garden, how raising the cattle for grass-fed beef is good for growing other real food, the business sense of the way the agricultural system has gone and how we can impact it, the growth of the farmer’s market movement showing people voting with their dollars, how you end up paying less for food at a farmer’s market compared to a grocery store, what his diet was like before, the high-carb foods served on television and movie sets, how eating the quality meats made him aware how inferior the rest of his food was, how bone broth helped improve the flavor of all his food, how his anthropology background led him to the Paleo diet, the random movement he started engaging in after he started eating better, the health tests he had run prior to this experiment and how they got better after eating real food, his intense focus on each part of the cow to make the most of the animal, how the one-year experiment turned into four years, the story about how he cooked the beef heart as a romantic dinner for his wife on Valentine’s Day (and how it didn’t go over so well), and the psychological toll of consuming a beef tongue.

When an internal medicine physician who uses low-carb nutrition with her patients named Dr. Sarah Hallberg heard he would be traveling to her home state during the July 4th weekend this year, she invited Jimmy to come to speak to her patients and hospital colleagues at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana about the content his bestselling 2013 book Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers? as well as a sneak peek at his not-yet-released at the time August 5, 2014 book release Keto Clarity: Your Definitive Guide to the Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet.

There were 100+ people in attendance at this standing-room-only event over the Independence Day holiday weekend and Jimmy delivered the cholesterol lecture he was going to give (but gave up his time slot to another speaker) on this year’s Low-Carb Cruise entitled “12 Things We’ve Gotten All Wrong About Cholesterol.” Listen in to hear Jimmy briefly share about his success with the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet, the 12 major flaws in the way we currently look at cholesterol and heart disease, a very open question and answer session that garnered a wide variety of fascinating questions from the attendees very interested about learning more about the ketogenic diet, feedback from the audience after the lecture was over, and so much more. This event was such an overwhelming success, they’ve already invited Jimmy Moore to return again in the summer 2015 to give a full lecture on ketosis. In this day and age of instant information at your fingertips with the click of a mouse searching the Internet on virtually any topic you want to learn more about, it can be a bit daunting trying to sift through it all to know what to believe about any given subject. The challenge in the world of diet, fitness, and health is the fact that there are so many cultural norms that people simply believe at face value that have never been proven by any research–and yet people buy into them hook, line, and sinker. This doesn’t sit well with a nutrition and fitness expert named Mike Sheridan who believes the public deserves to hear the truth about what we REALLY know about nutrition rather than the propaganda that has been put out there in the mainstream of our culture regarding this subject. He does this regularly through his Huffington Post columns. Additionally, he’s written a couple of books that take on the common wisdom on diet and fitness and turn them on their head with Eat Meat And Stop Jogging: ‘Common’ Advice On How To Get Fit Is Keeping You Fat And Making You Sick and Live It, NOT Diet!: Forget Cardio. Forget Calories.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Mike have an in-depth conversation about how he learned about low-carb as a high school football player, why elite athletes are starting to embrace low-carb and ketogenic diets, how the parents of young student athletes are the major roadblock in making low-carb, high-fat nutritional changes, the challenge he faces trying to buck the trend of the right diet for athletics, the role of saturated fat in the diet in keeping us sated and free from cravings, what it will take to bring about cultural change regarding nutrition, the obsession about calories and fat in our health culture, why carbohydrates really aren’t necessary for human health, the nonsensical nature of the calories in/calories out message, how people are causing more harm than good engaging in cardio exercise, his passion for helping people realize how easy it is to get and stay fit, why he believes conventional wisdom has people “overworked and underfed,” and his driving philosophy to enjoy what he is doing so that it never feels like work. You’ll get to hear all of this and a whole lot more in today’s fun and encouraging interview!

If you’ve been paying attention to what’s been happening with nutritional health in recent years, then you’ll already there are two movements that have run along parallel paths in terms of their popularity. One is Paleo which was the #1 diet search term in 2013. But the other one is the quantified self movement with the whole idea of people conducting their own n=1 experiments to see what happens to them when they make changes to some aspect of their diet and lifestyle. Our host Jimmy Moore did this in 2012-2013 with his nutritional ketosis experiment. But if you ask Paleo enthusiast and quantified self-experimenter Ashley Tudor about this, she’d say self-testing is the way you make Paleo work best for you and she’s outlined how and why in her new Victory Belt Publishing book entitled Perfecting Paleo: Personalize Your Diet Rules: Ancient Wisdom Meets Self-Testing.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Ashley discuss why she is a big believer in hunting, how to make quality meats more affordable to the masses, her travels to other countries and her observations about the food culture there, the various experiments she did on herself in her pursuit of perfecting Paleo (including a stint into nutritional ketosis), and so much more. Ashley is a vibrant and articulate representative in the Paleo community that not near enough people know about. Soak in what she has to say in today’s episode.

Ashley is a vibrant and articulate representative in the Paleo community that not near enough people know about. Soak in what she has to say in today’s episode.
