Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) convenes a panel of experts on nutrition and health called the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to determine the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and they recently announced the latest version in force now through 2020. We’ve been following these guidelines closely hoping they would make major shifts away from the same old failed conventional wisdom that has plagued us since 1980. And when I interviewed investigative journalist Nina Teicholz, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet, about the potential changes in April 2015, she was hopeful that things would be different this time around. But in this exclusive Periscope interview (see all his daily Periscope videos at JimmyScopes.com) our host Jimmy Moore recently conducted with Nina, she shares the full details on what was put into the Dietary Guidelines.

Listen in as Jimmy and Nina talk about whether the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are based on the latest science, the heavy influence on our culture of these guidelines, Nina’s British Medical Journal article The scientific report guiding the US dietary guidelines: is it scientific?, why they completely ignored the literature supporting the low-carbohydrate diet, the tremendous backlash she got for her BMJ article, the tiny changes that have been made to the new guidelines (limiting added sugars, alcohol and caffeine are now okay, soy milk is now recommended, and the drop on the caps on dietary cholesterol), the new look at dietary patterns instead of macronutrients (although all the science is on macros), why the low-fat diet is dead and nobody knows it, how the actual recommendations are virtually identical what they were back in 2005, Nina’s non-profit group Nutrition Coalition, the National Academy of Medicine review requirements before the 2020 Dietary Guidelines, whether the guidelines will ever get away from the government reigns, the congressional hearing that happened last Fall over these guidelines, why the guidelines are still relevant despite the criticism about them, and the legal strong-arming that is happening against low-carb diets and dietary fat.

1041: Dr. Linda Girgis Says There Is A ‘War On Doctors’ That’s Destroying Healthcare

We all know that the healthcare system in America has become broken and is in shambles. Now more than ever before, doctors are being pressured into seeing an ever-increasing patient load in less and less time while the patients themselves are getting caught in the crosshairs of the mayhem of the system that is driven by controlling costs while neglecting genuine care for the sick. This is something that a South River, New Jersey-based family physician named Dr. Linda Girgis has become greatly concerned about in recent years and now she has written a new book about this in what she describes as The War on Doctors: And the Destruction of US Healthcare.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Girgis discuss her passion for her patients and how the system has let them down, why physicians are under attack because of the mandates being placed on them by government regulations, how the healthcare system is broken and what can be done to fix it for both physicians and patients, why patients with chronic and rare diseases are getting inadequate care because of cost controls, how the pharmaceutical industry is running roughshod in the medical community because of a lack of oversight or transparency, and so much more! If you’re frustrated by the state of modern medicine, then this is one conversation you don’t want to miss out on.

963: Dr. Malcolm Kendrick Sorts Out Medical Advice From Medical Nonsense

Scottish general practitioner, medical research skeptic, and author Dr. Malcolm Kendrick is our guest today in Episode 963 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The current state of nutritional health research is in shambles. With all the medical advice that’s being given to patients that seems to go back and forth saying one thing is for you one day and then turning right around and stating that same thing is suddenly bad for you, what is a patient to believe? For a Scottish general practitioner named Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, he’s been observing the games that are played with the research and stands up against the way Big Medicine is manipulating the studies towards things that make the most money and not necessarily the actions that will improve the health of patients. Dr. Kendrick has released a new book about this subject entitled Doctoring Data: How to sort out medical advice from medical nonsense.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kendrick discuss his skepticism about how the state of scientific research is a “crock,” why the bad science has been so successful at penetrating the culture, how old ideas tend to die very hard, the simple narrative that makes people understand (even if it’s wrong), how it’s so difficult for the layperson to decipher the good from the bad science, why new researchers should challenge and look for scientific dogma to discredit it, the huge problem with how research is all treated equally, we’re designed to eat mostly animals but the popular notion is that plants should be first, it’s enormously time-consuming getting bogged down by bad data, how the Dietary Guidelines are the epitome of the ramifications of bad science, the continuing problem with laypeople still being scared of cholesterol levels and turning to statins, the problems with low cholesterol levels, statins will be found to be the greatest medical disaster in the history of medicine, when you criticize the system you’re accused of being a scaremonger, if you ate no cholesterol in your diet then your body would naturally make it, the problem with cancer screening and the harm it is causing, patients like to think they are being protected by getting screened, and how patients can determine the nonsense from the valid information for their health.
