There’s this common perception in the athletic world that in order to fuel your exercise performance, you must load up on high amounts of carbohydrates. But in recent years, a new trend has emerged where long-distance runners are turning to a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet to give them a longer, more steady source of energy during their races. We previously shared an interview with Western States 100-mile Endurance Run record holder Timothy Allen Olson in 2013 discussing how switching to an LCHF approach improved his race-day symptoms and endurance issues. Today we present another ultra marathon runner named Zach Bitter who has competed in 24 events and holds the 12 Hour World Record, 100 mile American Record, and 200k American Record. Additionally, he’s a two time National Champion (50 mile road 2012, and 100k road 2014) as well as a member of USA’s 2014 100k World Championship Team, which won gold in Doha, Qatar and placed 6th overall.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Zach discuss how we was always active growing up, why ultra running became appealing to him, his old 60-70% carbohydrate endurance diet prior to discovering LCHF, the negative things he noticed in his health, including sleep, water retention, and gut health issues, the positive changes he saw when he shifted to a more ketogenic approach, what his keto-adaptation period was like, how he was used to running in a fasted state during his training prior to going full-on ketogenic, how his macronutrient ratio shifted from pre-LCHF to now, how he never really ate a lot of bread in his diet, what he says to people who believe a high-carb, grain-free approach would give him good results, why he loves using coconut-based products as his primary source of fat, the perception that people think he’s eating meat non-stop (but he doesn’t because it’s too much protein), his testing at Dr. Jeff Volek’s lab helping him fine-tune his diet, how your macronutrient intake will likely change the longer your body becomes used to being fat-adapted, the wide variability of carbohydrate intake according to the individual, how improving his sleep and other lifestyle factors helped improve his performance, how his cholesterol markers all markedly improved eating LCHF, how much his inflammation levels have come done, what race day looks like for him in his diet, the wasp extract from the VESPA Power Products company that he uses for endurance over long distances (a ketone booster!), why he doesn’t really use much gels during races anymore, the banana chips cooked in coconut oil that help him keep good fats and a bit of carbohydrates for fuel, whether he’s ever used other exogenous sources of ketones like ketone esters, how to find the right balance of fat and carbohydrates that enable an endurance athlete to compete well, why running faster races like a 5k doesn’t necessarily mean needing higher carb consumption, and a whole lot more. If you are someone interested in the relationship between low-carb nutrition and endurance races, then you won’t want to miss what Zach has to share in this interview.

Frustration has been building amongst some people in the Paleo community who are deeply concerned that the term “Paleo” has been overtaken by something that doesn’t represent what it really means as the popularity has increased in the mainstream. Two of the loudest and more well-known voices of dissent–Jason Seib and Sarah Fragoso–have decided to use less of the “P” word by forming their own concept known as JassaFIT. Both are successful personal trainers who realize healthy living takes more than exercise, but the right kind of nutrition, adequate sleep, and controlled stress levels. And they’ve outlined all of their wisdom on these issues in a great new e-book you’ll learn about in today’s show called The JASSA Method: How To Achieve Everlasting Fat Loss.

Listen in as Jimmy, Jason, and Sarah share the details about their exciting new program, why neither of them have to be in the gym training clients (but why they still do!), why every aspect of your lifestyle matters in your success, the way stress unravels all the good your are doing in your diet and fitness, how it’s easier to tell clients how to manage stress than do it, her magic words for calming herself when she gets stressed, how Sarah tries to infuse joy into her daily life, how we got so messed up that we need to put it back together again, how modern society doesn’t even come close to the life of our ancestors, why getting healthy is “not an overnight fix,” why most people can’t and don’t stick to any given diet (we’re asking the wrong question), the distinction between weight loss and fat loss, why Sarah is considered “overweight” according to BMI, how the flawed calories hypothesis has crept its way into the Paleo community, the role insulin resistance plays in health and the consequences for people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes, how people want to know exactly what to do in their diet and health pursuits, why our brains aren’t wired for long-term goal setting, and so much more!

What does this have to do with nutrition and health? Well, after years of believing in the high-carb message for athletes, Grant educated himself on all the latest science about why fat isn’t the enemy in our health. Now he’s taken all of this newly-acquired knowledge and put it into book form with Eat Bacon, Don’t Jog: Get Strong. Get Lean. No Bullshit. It’s a plain language food and fitness guide that shares the truth about low-carb, high-fat diets that buck the trend of conventional wisdom. It contains 100 short and funny essays that explain the basic concepts of LCHF in introductory terms that anyone can understand. Listen in to Grant and Jimmy have a fabulous conversation about his new book that also includes nourishing recipes, workouts, and solid information for anyone interested in healthy low-carb living.

In this day and age of instant information at your fingertips with the click of a mouse searching the Internet on virtually any topic you want to learn more about, it can be a bit daunting trying to sift through it all to know what to believe about any given subject. The challenge in the world of diet, fitness, and health is the fact that there are so many cultural norms that people simply believe at face value that have never been proven by any research–and yet people buy into them hook, line, and sinker. This doesn’t sit well with a nutrition and fitness expert named Mike Sheridan who believes the public deserves to hear the truth about what we REALLY know about nutrition rather than the propaganda that has been put out there in the mainstream of our culture regarding this subject. He does this regularly through his Huffington Post columns. Additionally, he’s written a couple of books that take on the common wisdom on diet and fitness and turn them on their head with Eat Meat And Stop Jogging: ‘Common’ Advice On How To Get Fit Is Keeping You Fat And Making You Sick and Live It, NOT Diet!: Forget Cardio. Forget Calories.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Mike have an in-depth conversation about how he learned about low-carb as a high school football player, why elite athletes are starting to embrace low-carb and ketogenic diets, how the parents of young student athletes are the major roadblock in making low-carb, high-fat nutritional changes, the challenge he faces trying to buck the trend of the right diet for athletics, the role of saturated fat in the diet in keeping us sated and free from cravings, what it will take to bring about cultural change regarding nutrition, the obsession about calories and fat in our health culture, why carbohydrates really aren’t necessary for human health, the nonsensical nature of the calories in/calories out message, how people are causing more harm than good engaging in cardio exercise, his passion for helping people realize how easy it is to get and stay fit, why he believes conventional wisdom has people “overworked and underfed,” and his driving philosophy to enjoy what he is doing so that it never feels like work. You’ll get to hear all of this and a whole lot more in today’s fun and encouraging interview!

There are so many great people (some who are unknown to the rest of the health community) who are working in their own spheres of influence to share the message of a low-carb, Paleo, and ketogenic diet approach to getting healthy. One such proponent of these nutritional principles is nutrition and fitness expert Terry Shanahan from “The Shanahan Plan” who has personally used this approach himself to overcome chronic illness. Now he’s using that experience along with knowledge of how powerful nutrition can be in the lives of others to teach them through online courses simplified down into three-day chunks about how to transition over to more of a Paleo-style diet. It’s called The Paleo Transition and is being used by people desiring weight loss, those wanting improved athletic performance, and even those who have unexplained health challenges they want to try to figure out. Terry has an in with the professional sports world successfully telling them about the real food-based plan he talks about in his courses, including the star of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks named Kyle Korver.

Jimmy first heard about Terry’s work with a local chain of grocery stores in the Omaha, Nebraska area called Wohlner’s where they now have a section of their store dedicated to Paleo products and a full deli lunch that serves Paleo-friendly meals. Seriously! Terry has even managed to get a catering company to start offering Paleo options for clients that want healthier choices. Not too shabby for someone who at the age of 24 thought he was going to be dead because of an undiagnosed autoimmune/food sensitivity issue. Listen in to this incredible interview Jimmy conducted with someone you should be hearing a lot more about in the years to come.

You might be wondering why Jimmy has invited on the founder and owner of Rivendell Bicycle Works named Grant Petersen who wrote what is widely considered “the bible for bicycle riders” called Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike.

944: Zach Bitter Is An Ultramarathon World Champion Fueled By LCHF

944: Zach Bitter Is An Ultramarathon World Champion Fueled By LCHF

There’s this common perception in the athletic world that in order to fuel your exercise performance, you must load up on high amounts of carbohydrates.

You might be wondering why Jimmy has invited on the founder and owner of Rivendell Bicycle Works named Grant Petersen who wrote what is widely considered “the bible for bicycle riders” called Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike.

944: Zach Bitter Is An Ultramarathon World Champion Fueled By LCHF

Ketogenic ultra marathon runner Zach Bitter is our guest today in Episode 944 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
