836: Christopher Kelly Busting The Myths About Low-Carb Diets & Athletes

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 10.07.13 PM

Professional mountain biker, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner and a recent graduate of the Kalish Institute Christopher Kelly is our interview guest today in Episode 836 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

One of the common memes put out there mostly in the Paleo community is how low-carb diets are perfect for people who are slothful and don’t do a lot of movement. But they say if you exercise just a little to the very elite level, then you had better be refueling your body with carbohydrates. But this doesn’t make any sense to pro mountain biker Christopher Kelly. After finding health through the nutritional density of a low-carb Paleo diet along with some key lab-driven functional medicine techniques, Christopher now engages in professional mountain bike races at the highest level eating a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet. When he became frustrated by the current state of healthcare offered by conventional medicine, that’s what make him partner up with wife and food scientist Julia as well as a low-carb friendly doctor named Dr. Jamie Busch to form the new practice Nourish Balance Thrive in Berkeley, California.

Listen in as Jimmy and Christopher blow the myth that you absolutely need carbs to perform athletically, why breast feeding for mothers doesn’t require as many carbohydrates as we’ve been told, the lack of evidence that exists supporting the idea that very low-carb, ketogenic diets lead to hypothyroidism, the REAL reason why low thyroid function happens on a low-carb diet, some of the basic problems his clinic is seeing in the food diaries of their clients eating low-carb, and the self-sabotage people make putting so much stress on themselves along with a sleep deficiency that can tee-totally derail your attempts to lose weight and get healthy. This podcast is SOLID GOLD from start to finish, so don’t miss a moment.

We live in exciting times when it comes to health information and it is thanks in part to the people who are active sharing information in the mainstream about nutrition, fitness and lifestyle changes. One of those people is a Pennsylvania-based man with a doctorate of nutrition named Dr. Mike Roussell, PhD who is a passionate advocate for taking complex nutritional concepts and making them palatable to the general public by translating them into practical advice the people can use to lose weight and get health. He’s the author of the Kindle e-book The 6 Pillars of Nutrition – A Simple Diet Solution for Permanent Weight Loss, Better Health, and a Longer Life and a regular contributor to Men’s Health and many other national print publications and leading online fitness outlets. Jimmy found out about Dr. Mike in this April 2014 “Ask The Diet Doctor” column at Shape.com.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Roussell have an engaging conversation about why he decided not to pursue his medical degree, how The Zone Diet by Dr. Barry Sears impacted his views on nutrition, why it makes sense to explore the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet in a healthy lifestyle, why ketogenic diets are still the “black sheep” of nutrition, how the science of low-carb diets is so convincing but completely missed by many, why trying to meet an arbitrary LDL target is “kinda crazy,” why anyone working in nutrition needs a psychology degree, the metabolic benefits that can occur with a step-wise reduction in carbohydrates, why food company influence on nutrition is overblown, why “high-protein” low-carb is a “misnomer,” how there are no negative changes in health that happen with a high-fat diet, how using “carbohydrate restriction” is a better term than “low-carb,” the body is very good at adapting to things, how a very low-carb diet can dehydrate you and mess with your electrolyte balance, the stunning exercise performance he achieved in a ketogenic state, what the DASH diet is and why it’s not what it is claimed to be, why the salt restriction recommendation is silly and impractical, the unintended consequences of having too low sodium, why a plant-based diet is really only about reducing saturated fat, the DASH diet test he did WITH red meat to see what would happen, and so much more.

827: Terry Shanahan Shares Real Food Paleo Principles With Professional Athletes

There are so many great people (some who are unknown to the rest of the health community) who are working in their own spheres of influence to share the message of a low-carb, Paleo, and ketogenic diet approach to getting healthy. One such proponent of these nutritional principles is nutrition and fitness expert Terry Shanahan from “The Shanahan Plan” who has personally used this approach himself to overcome chronic illness. Now he’s using that experience along with knowledge of how powerful nutrition can be in the lives of others to teach them through online courses simplified down into three-day chunks about how to transition over to more of a Paleo-style diet. It’s called The Paleo Transition and is being used by people desiring weight loss, those wanting improved athletic performance, and even those who have unexplained health challenges they want to try to figure out. Terry has an in with the professional sports world successfully telling them about the real food-based plan he talks about in his courses, including the star of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks named Kyle Korver.

Jimmy first heard about Terry’s work with a local chain of grocery stores in the Omaha, Nebraska area called Wohlner’s where they now have a section of their store dedicated to Paleo products and a full deli lunch that serves Paleo-friendly meals. Seriously! Terry has even managed to get a catering company to start offering Paleo options for clients that want healthier choices. Not too shabby for someone who at the age of 24 thought he was going to be dead because of an undiagnosed autoimmune/food sensitivity issue. Listen in to this incredible interview Jimmy conducted with someone you should be hearing a lot more about in the years to come.

Ketogenic diet athlete, health podcaster, and New York Times bestselling author Ben Greenfield is our interview guest today in Episode 826 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

In the world of exercise performance and fitness competition, conventional wisdom says to eat lots of carbohydrates prior to a competition to fuel your body and to push your body to the extreme limits. This has never made sense to an Ironman triathlete named Ben Greenfield who is the host of the uber-popular “Ben Greenfield Fitness” iTunes podcast. Fans of Ben will know he has a knack for providing some incredible practical, alternative information for the “weekend warrior” athlete as well as the professional, elite athlete. He’s now put together details about his philosophy in a very thick new Victory Belt Publishing book that has already hit the New York Times bestsellers list entitled Beyond Training: Mastering Endurance, Health & Life.

Listen in as Jimmy and Ben talk about all the bonus book pages he offers readers on his website, why he decided to write this book, the five parts he addresses in the book including fitness, recovery, nutrition, lifestyle, and the brain, why he didn’t include other categories in the book, tricks and tips to recover faster from workouts, how to know with great accuracy whether or not your body has recovered yet, how to determine what the right mix of carbohydrate, protein, and fat are right for the individual, time-saving tips to keep your life as stress-free as possible, and a whole lot more. These two guys only barely scratch the surface of all that you get from this spectacular new book, so listen and enjoy and then go get your own copy of Beyond Training.

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 7.12.10 PM

Registered, Licensed Dietitian, health coach, blogger and podcaster Cassie Bjork is our special guest host interviewing Paleo blogger and author Michelle Tam in Episode 806 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Today we’ve got a guest host that may be familiar to fans of Jimmy Moore’s podcast. She is Cassie Bjork from “Dietitian Cassie” and serves as Jimmy’s co-host on his Friday podcast “Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends.” She is incredibly passionate about exposing people to healthy nutrition with real food. Through her work as Dietitian Cassie, she focuses on debunking rumors, diet myths and fads while teaching clients how to eat healthy by breaking down research-based material into practical forms that can be implemented into any lifestyle. Cassie is an ardent believer in using real food for optimal health and performance and strives to live a balanced lifestyle while helping others do the same.

Cassie invited on Paleo blogger and New York Times bestselling author of Nom Nom Paleo: Food for Humans Michelle Tam from “Nom Nom Paleo.” In partnership with her husband, Henry Fong, Michelle developed the top-selling Nom Nom Paleo iPad app as well as their new book. When she’s not cooking or writing, Michelle can be found working graveyard shifts as a hospital pharmacist, chasing her two young sons around the house, or passed out cold (yes, she’s got quite the quirky sense of humor, but that’s why we love her!).

Listen in as Cassie and Michelle discuss how she balances the many important roles in her life, how she prioritizes each of those duties to stay sane through the busyness, what she feeds her kids in their school lunches, how she transitioned her kids to embrace and love the Paleo diet, the importance of being realistic and listening to your body, the critical impact of exercise on health, not falling for “Paleo Perfectionism,” her recommendations for stress management to prevent stress eating, and how the idea of treats fits into a Paleo template. And don’t miss hearing Michelle shares her kitchen staples and what she does when she doesn’t have a lot of time to cook. This is a fun episode with two amazingly spectacular leaders in the Paleo/real food community.

Functional nutrition consultant and certified CrossFit coach Terry Shanahan is our interview guest today in Episode 827 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Registered, Licensed Dietitian, health coach, blogger and podcaster Cassie Bjork is our special guest host interviewing Paleo blogger and author Michelle Tam in Episode 806 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Nutritional health expert and author Dr. Mike Roussell is our interview guest today in Episode 833 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Nutritional health expert and author Dr. Mike Roussell is our interview guest today in Episode 833 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Functional nutrition consultant and certified CrossFit coach Terry Shanahan is our interview guest today in Episode 827 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Listen in to this incredible interview Jimmy conducted with someone you should be hearing a lot more about in the years to come.

Registered, Licensed Dietitian, health coach, blogger and podcaster Cassie Bjork is our special guest host interviewing Paleo blogger and author Michelle Tam in Episode 806 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

833: Dr. Mike Roussell Extols The Virtues Of A Low-Carb, High-Fat, Ketogenic Diet

Nutritional health expert and author Dr. Mike Roussell is our interview guest today in Episode 833 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
