Some people seek out celebrity status by bringing attention to themselves to make that happen. But there are a few very special people in the world who have no such desire to become famous and yet that’s exactly what happens to them within the natural course of doing what they love and are passionate about. That certainly describes today’s interview guest Pete Evans, perhaps the most famous TV chef in Australia. He has taken his joy for cooking professionally and combined it with a healthy emphasis on a low-carb, high-fat version of the Paleo diet to help make the people of his country and around the world better off in their weight and health than they’ve ever been before. Now Pete has brought a bit of that Aussie flair to the United States with the release of his new book The Paleo Chef: Quick, Flavorful Paleo Meals for Eating Well.

Listen in as Jimmy and Pete share about how Nora Gedgaudas introduced him to Paleo, his culinary training in the United States, his personal interest in health and nutrition, how Tony Robbins got him excited about healthy living, how being a vegan made his health deteriorate, how going Paleo has helped him and his entire family get healthy, the major shift that will take place in the next five years regarding real food, why he thought about calling his nutritional approach the “Pete Evans Way,” weight normalization is merely the bonus of eating healthy again, the reality of “normal” from mainstream health gurus is far different from what we consider normal, the rise in dietitians embracing this way of eating, the popularity of the Paleo Cafe chain in Australia, his “The Paleo Way” television series that has gone worldwide, why he doesn’t put a ton of science into his presentations, the 10-week program he provides with Nora Gedgaudas, how he “reluctantly” got into being a television chef, food television programs have become a ratings success around the world, how this focus on food is planting seeds in the minds of the next generation, how he funded “The Paleo Way” TV show with his own money with no commitment from any network to air it, his “transition” approach to get families to buy into better food choices, his “I love pasta” story, and so much more. Pete Evans is a superstar celebrity chef in Australia and we’re honored to have him here today on the show.

One of the newer names and faces making an impact in the Paleo blogosphere in recent years is a Portland, Oregon-based mom named Kelly Bejelly from the “A Girl Worth Saving” blog and the co-host of the “Listen Up Paleo” podcast she does with Liz McGaw. Kelly is a savvy recipe developer, writer and photographer who was contacted last year by a major publisher who wanted to make her dream of writing a book a reality. That book–Paleo Eats: 111 Comforting Gluten-Free, Grain-Free and Dairy-Free Recipes for the Foodie in You–is now available and Kelly is here today to talk about it.

Listen to Jimmy and Kelly share about how her diagnosis of pre-diabetes in 2009 woke her up to making a change, the shift she made from being a vegetarian/vegan over to Paleo (thanks to the influence of Mark Sisson), the weight loss and health success overcoming PCOS, anxiety and depression she found making simply changes in her diet, how she has incorporated the healthy habits she has learned with her son, why her recipes are simple and for the masses, and her reaction to many common criticisms and fallacies about Paleo (it’s about having “rock hard abs,” you have to eat grass-fed and organic foods, and you will automatically become very lean when you eat this way), and a lot more. Kelly is an amazingly inspiring story of someone who has changed her life forever thanks to the Paleo diet and is now seeking to help others in their own journey to better health.

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Over the past few years we have seen a huge influx of brand new Paleo cookbooks hitting the market from mostly enthusiastic bloggers and social media darlings who know how to whip up recipes that are delicious, pleasing to the eyes, and fit within a healthy lifestyle. But today’s podcast interview guest brings a little more experience to the table than just posting a photo with some ingredients and directions. She’s a San Francisco, CA-based professional chef named Simone Miller from “Zenbelly” who has been working in the culinary world for almost 20 years and she’s watched how the food trends have come and gone over the years. And when Paleo made a bona fide difference in her life, she committed to starting a 100% gluten-free catering company that would specialize in Paleo cuisine. Simone sees her role in the Paleo community as an ambassador for bringing real food back to the kitchen and dinner table again where she thinks any home cook could produce a quality dish that is elegant, delicious and artfully prepared just like you’d find in a fine restaurant. When you focus on using fresh ingredients like what is available when you eat Paleo, that’s not difficult to do as Simone explains in today’s show.

Listen in as Jimmy and Simone dig deeply into what she wrote about in her brand new 2014 release The Zenbelly Cookbook: An Epicurean’s Guide to Paleo Cuisine, why she values creating meals that are quick and easy to make at home, how the focus of her blog has been to show people how simple and beautiful eating healthy can look like, why she doesn’t think people should view Paleo as a restrictive diet in any way, her concerns about the word “Paleo” to describe this way of eating, the reality that people need to learn to get in the kitchen and cook more than they probably already are doing, why she vary rarely spends hours in the kitchen cooking dinner and yet still produces a great meal, her hope and desire that her book inspires people to get excited and have fun about cooking at home again, and why she’s no fan of Paleo perfectionists. What a fabulous conversation with someone who knows a trick or two in the kitchen to pass along to you. ENJOY!

871: Leanne Ely Encourages A ‘Part-Time Paleo’ Approach To Reach The Masses

Screen Shot 2014-09-22 at 7.57.30 AM

Nutritionist, syndicated columnist, and New York Times bestselling author Leanne Ely is our interview guest today Episode 871 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

Paleo has become quite the buzzword in recent years as the movement dedicated to helping people remove grains, processed foods, vegetable oils, and refined carbohydrates from their diet (along with dairy and even nightshades for a few) has grown by leaps and bounds. It was the #1 most-Googled diet search term of 2013 and shows no signs of slowing down. We have people like Robb Wolf, Diane Sanfilippo, Dr. Loren Cordain, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, and many more for helping to put the message out there in books, blogs and podcasts. With the promulgation of the Paleo principles into our culture, more and more people are now enamored by it and want to give it a go for themselves to see how it helps them in their health. Because it can seem daunting at first to those who are coming off the Standard American Diet (SAD), nutritionist, syndicated columnist and New York Times bestselling author Leanne Ely from “Saving Dinner” believes it’s important to ease some people into Paleo rather than opting for diving in head-first in one swell foop!

That’s why she wrote her new book Part-Time Paleo: How to Go Paleo Without Going Crazy to help people remove the obstacles that stand in their way of giving the Paleo diet the old college try by getting them started on the right foot in a way that is doable immediately so they can reap the great benefits that come from a real-foods based lifestyle change. As an experienced recipe maker and whiz kid in the kitchen, Leanne shares her tips for stocking your food shelves with the best ingredients to make amazing meals. Listen in as Jimmy and Leanne discuss her concept of “part-time” Paleo and how it can be the inroads for a much larger segment of the population to adopt to Paleo more quickly than some of the more intimidating approaches.

Self-taught chef, gluten-free Paleo food catering business owner, and author Simone Miller is our interview guest today in Episode 875 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Self-taught chef, gluten-free Paleo food catering business owner, and author Simone Miller is our interview guest today in Episode 875 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Self-taught chef, gluten-free Paleo food catering business owner, and author Simone Miller is our interview guest today in Episode 875 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
