884: Dr. Alvin Danenberg Incorporates Primal Nutrition With His Periodontal Patients

Screen Shot 2014-10-21 at 7.46.49 AM

Periodontist and primal nutrition practitioner Dr. Alvin Danenberg is our interview guest today in Episode 884 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

In the context of ancestral health, a lot of focus tends to be on weight loss, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But there are enthusiasts all across the broad spectrum of the medical profession who are taking the principles of low-carb, Paleo, primal and real food directly to their patients to help them improve the aspects of their health related to their field of expertise. That’s exactly what a South Carolina-based nutritional periodontist named Dr. Alvin Danenberg is now doing for his patients after discovering the ancestral lifestyle in early 2013. He has received advanced training in ancestral nutrition from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health as well as The Center for Mind-Body Medicine in 2013, become a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner in July 2014, and in September 2014 he became a Certified Primal Blueprint Expert (Mark Sisson’s new certification program he shared about in Episode 873).

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Danenberg discuss how he got excited about dental and gum health back in the early 1970s, he practiced traditionally for 35 years until learning about the laser-based LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) protocol, why the laser treatment wasn’t the total answer for his patients, the nutritional course where he learned about ancestral health, why he shifted from being a traditional periodontist to using more modern methods for treating gum disease, his wife Sue didn’t support what he was doing but was willing to give it a chance, how his life shifted to being more primal thanks to the work of Mark Sisson, how he never heard of the work of Dr. Weston A. Price in any of his formal medical education, how he convinces his patients that tooth and gum health are related directly to their nutrition, many chronic health issues begin in dental and gum health, his work healing the gut health of his patients to improve their gum health, the results of the clinical study he has designed using real food-based, nutrient-dense supplements to see what happens to gum disease, why the C-Reactive Protein (the key inflammation marker) didn’t improve in the patients in the study, his collaboration with former podcast guest Ramiel Nagel, whether his study has been accepted to any medical journals, the self-professed limitations of his study, the company who wants him to do a study for them, and why you don’t need a commercial toothpaste to brush your teeth.

Sleep (along with stress) is perhaps one of the biggest non-dietary factors that plays such an instrumental part in the weight and health success or failure that people tend to have. If you get an adequate amount of restful, rejuvenating sleep in bed at night, then your health will be rewarded for giving it what it wants. But for most people, they are living their lives on a significant sleep deficit and that is taking a major toll on their quality of living that cannot be ignored any long according to Dr. Kirk Parsley, MD, who served as the Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine and is certified in hormonal modulation lecturing extensively on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization. He is working on a book on sleep optimization, but caught the attention of people like Robb Wolf because of a TEDxReno talk he gave on the subject of sleep last month called America’s biggest problem.

DR. KIRK PARSLEY’S IMPASSIONED TEDX TALK ON SLEEP

America’s biggest problem | Kirk Parsley | TEDxReno

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Parsley discuss his story being an active member of the Navy SEALS team and how he shifted his career to the healthcare industry, how he developed a good rapport with the Navy SEALS who he encountered, how sleep came on his radar screen and why medical school didn’t help him understand the importance of it, why sleep is such a major factor in optimizing your health, the insulin connection to sleep deprivation, when you are broken a lack of sleep breaks you even more, how he ran into Robb Wolf at an event that got him to turn his career into the sleep guy who talks about nutrition, the main reasons why people don’t tend to get enough sleep, the cultural norm of sleep being less important than work, how some people have a genetically higher tolerance for lack of sleep just like variances in carbohydrate tolerance, how his own sleep deprivation wrecked his fitness and health, what “sleeping adequately” is defined as, how being in a pitch black room can help you get caught up on your sleep debt, how a high percentage of Navy SEALS are taking Ambien and drinking alcohol to get to sleep, the value of getting bright light therapy during the daytime to get your circadian rhythm and health back in line again, his sleep cocktail of a variety of sleep-inducing supplements, why you should start to value sleep more in your life, the New York Times column featuring Nom Nom Paleo wearing yellow glasses at night, the purpose of a completely dark room for sleep, whether melatonin supplementation can help with sleep, the value of doing a to-do list and a to-worry list, and a whole lot more! 881: Dr. Eric Thorn And Marylou VanHintum Using Low-Carb Diets To Optimize Health

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 3.47.15 PM

Cardiologist Dr. Eric Thorn and registered nurse Marylou Van Hintum are our interview guests today in Episode 881 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD AT ITUNES

One of the most exciting developments that has been happening within the medical community over the past few years is a growing tide of healthcare providers who have become frustrated by the failure of the traditional model for medicine and are willing to look outside the box in treating their patients through nutrition and lifestyle modalities as the first option rather than so quickly turning to a prescription medication. Today’s podcast interview guests certainly fit that mold. They are an Arlington, Virginia-based cardiologist and obesity medicine physician named Dr. Eric Thorn and a real food-based registered nurse named Marylou VanHintum. Together they joined forces to open the Center for Cardio-Metabolic Health and Weight Loss in September 2012 providing medically-supervised, nutritional rehabilitation to treat metabolic syndrome, promote weight loss, reduce risk for heart disease, and improve overall quality of life. The nutritional plan they incorporated with their patients is a low-carb, high-fat diet with real, whole foods that help heal the damage that has accumulated over years, even decades, and the patients receive personalized follow-up to help them with their specific individualized needs to lose weight and get healthy.

Listen in to hear Jimmy, Dr. Thorn, and Marylou share about how they came to low-carb nutrition from within the traditional medical establishment, how they came to realize how low-carb nutrition could be used as a powerful tool for promoting optimal health, why weight loss isn’t really the primary focus of their work with patients, how a cardiologist is able to talk about eating high-fat foods like bacon without getting ostracized by his colleagues, the impact of stress on your health during transitional periods in our lives (as Dr. Thorn and Marylou are currently going through parting ways but continuing their work with patients), and a whole lot more! Jimmy met these two at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) meeting a couple of years ago and this was such an intriguing discussion about the future of health and the intricate role nutrition will have to play in patient health in the coming years.

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 10.25.51 AM

Self-experimentation when it comes to the subject of nutrition and health is an absolute must. The quantified self movement is growing by leaps and bounds because patients are so fed up with the failure of the current model for healthy living being used by conventional medicine that they’ve grabbed back control of their own health and doing their own n=1 experiments to test how their body responds to any given stimuli. But today’s podcast interview guest isn’t just some patient–he was traditionally trained in medical school and has been treating patients himself as their medical doctor. His name is Dr. Spencer Nadolsky (listen to his previous interview on the show in Episode 552), an osteopath and obesity medicine specialist in Virginia, who decided to test the controversial dietary waters by shifting his meals over from low-carb to high-carb to see what would happen.

Have your Chocolate and Eat it Too!

Listen in to hear Dr. Nadolsky and I discuss his recent bodybuilding show, how his testosterone went to pot doing the competition, why counting macronutrients and calories were a critical element in helping him reach his body composition goals while maintaining excellent metabolic health, why he no longer worries about his macronutrients and calories anymore, how a lower-carb, higher-fat diet tends to help him keep his calories in check best, his foray into wanting to experiment with a high-carb diet to see what would happen, the reaction he received from the low-carb community to his n=1, why cravings and hunger are under control very well despite how palatable the food is on a low-carb, high-fat diet, what his experience has been with intermittent fasting, why some people thrive and others don’t do as well fasting, why he’s still eating 200-300g of carbohydrates because he’s doing well right now, how his LDL particles dropped dramatically when he cut the fat in his diet, what happened to his thyroid eating higher-carb (and his problem with people who talk bad about low-carb diets negatively impacting thyroid), how he wants to “have a baby” again doing another bodybuilding show, why he’s not personally a fan of using calorie-tracking websites like FitDay, what his diet looks like nowadays, how he was laughing at a vegan doctor who was mocking meat-eaters on Facebook, why the diet wars online are just silly, how he’s become enamored by lipidology, and a whole lot more. It’s an interesting chat about keeping an open mind and never getting too dogmatic about what you believe regarding nutritional health. ENJOY!

There are so many amazing voices out there trumpeting the cause of real food in helping people improve their health in ways they never thought would be possible without the medications and procedures that modern medicine has said is the inevitable path. And today’s interview guest knows this a bit more than most having been raised on a large Mennonite farm with honeybees, oranges, cattle, pigs, sheep and fresh fruits and vegetables from their homemade garden. She is a Chico, CA-based chiropractor and nutritional wellness practitioner named Dr. Deborah Penner from Whole Food Medicine and Chico Creek Wellness And Chiropractic. Jimmy met her in person a couple of months back at the Ancestral Health Symposium in Berkeley, California where she shared her passion for teaching, preaching, and sharing as much information about a whole foods, low-carb, ketogenic diet with fantastic results. Recently, she has been conducting keto-adaptation food groups with fantastic results, including producing weight loss when people got stuck, resolution of migraine headaches, and diabetics who were taking insulin no longer having to do that anymore.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Penner talk about how she was able to find robust health in her mid-50’s, why Whole Foods is in a dispute with her over her new name, how she evolved from recommending whole grains to no grains to high-protein and now ketosis, why all of her patients are given a blood glucose meter and ketone testing sticks to check their progress at home, how quickly changes begin to happen in her patients, some important aspects to getting keto-adapted that nobody talks about, how she helps people with a compromised biliary tract or no gallbladder get into ketosis, why shifting macronutrients alone may or may not be enough, her focus on nutrient-dense, high-fat foods to produce therapeutic ketones, her detox program that helps make adapting to the ketogenic diet easier, and so much more! Dr. Penner is one of the champions of low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic living working on the front lines of changing lives one patient at a time.

You’ll quickly notice Dr. Parsley is 100% committed to helping people live the highest quality of life possible, and achieve their health, performance, and longevity goals. ENJOY!

880: Dr. Spencer Nadolsky Does His Own Low-Carb To High-Carb N=1 Experiment

Screen Shot 2014-10-12 at 10.25.51 AM

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and medical bariatrician Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is our interview guest today in Episode 880 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

ENJOY!

Chiropractor and real foods-based nutrition practitioner Dr. Deborah Penner is our interview guest today in Episode 877 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
