The current state of nutritional health research is in shambles. With all the medical advice that’s being given to patients that seems to go back and forth saying one thing is for you one day and then turning right around and stating that same thing is suddenly bad for you, what is a patient to believe? For a Scottish general practitioner named Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, he’s been observing the games that are played with the research and stands up against the way Big Medicine is manipulating the studies towards things that make the most money and not necessarily the actions that will improve the health of patients. Dr. Kendrick has released a new book about this subject entitled Doctoring Data: How to sort out medical advice from medical nonsense.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kendrick discuss his skepticism about how the state of scientific research is a “crock,” why the bad science has been so successful at penetrating the culture, how old ideas tend to die very hard, the simple narrative that makes people understand (even if it’s wrong), how it’s so difficult for the layperson to decipher the good from the bad science, why new researchers should challenge and look for scientific dogma to discredit it, the huge problem with how research is all treated equally, we’re designed to eat mostly animals but the popular notion is that plants should be first, it’s enormously time-consuming getting bogged down by bad data, how the Dietary Guidelines are the epitome of the ramifications of bad science, the continuing problem with laypeople still being scared of cholesterol levels and turning to statins, the problems with low cholesterol levels, statins will be found to be the greatest medical disaster in the history of medicine, when you criticize the system you’re accused of being a scaremonger, if you ate no cholesterol in your diet then your body would naturally make it, the problem with cancer screening and the harm it is causing, patients like to think they are being protected by getting screened, and how patients can determine the nonsense from the valid information for their health.

Gestational diabetes has become more and more commonplace in modern society with the rise in insulin resistance that manifests itself once a woman becomes pregnant. This is something that doesn’t surprise a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified LEAP Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor named Lily Nichols from The Pilates Nutritionist. Her nutrient-dense, whole foods low-carb approach has helped her patients dealing with this scary situation during pregnancy overcome the major issues at hand. Lily has written a new book about this subject entitled Real Food for Gestational Diabetes: An Effective Alternative to the Conventional Nutrition Approach and it’s the very first time a whole food-based, lower carb diet has been recommended for managing gestational diabetes.

Listen in as Jimmy and Lily talk about why a low-carb diet needs to come from real food, what got her interested in nutrition when she was in high school (cooking school or become a dietitian?), how Pilates has been integrated into her message, how she knew the education she was getting in dietetics was bogus, what got her interested in the subject of gestational diabetes, why most gestational diabetes patients don’t do well on the diet therapy given, why the “random number” of 175 grams of carbohydrates per day is recommended for women with gestational diabetes, how they purposely want to keep pregnant women out of ketosis, why pregnancy naturally induces a state of ketosis, how some women can spill urine ketones even eating 175 grams of carbohydrates, gestational diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance by definition, why some women are more susceptible to gestational diabetes than others, how 50-70% of patients with gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes after birth within 5-10 years, how screening for A1c in the first trimester can catch gestational diabetes, how many gestational diabetes patients go back to eating poorly again after they have their baby, the underlying insulin resistance that doesn’t go away but can be managed with lifestyle, why most doctors aren’t screening for or worried about prediabetes, the horrific low-fat, high-carb traditional gestational diabetes diet, and we’re setting up kids to have excessive insulin production even before they’re born.

Breaking bad habits and behaviors can seem like an impossible thing to do because the pull to keep doing the same things you are used to doing is so incredibly strong. But for a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor-turned-writer named Gretchen Rubin, bringing about change is all about creating new good habits that are much more desirable while making your old bad habits into something you just don’t have any desire to do anymore. If you’ve never heard of Gretchen before, she’s a pretty big deal in the publishing world selling over two million copies of her books worldwide in more than thirty languages. Her 2009 classic book The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun was a runaway New York Times hit and now she’s back with her much-anticipated follow-up release (which has already hit the New York Times bestsellers list) called Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. She’s also got an extremely popular self-help iTunes podcast entitled Happier with Gretchen Rubin that’s worth checking out.

Listen in as Jimmy and Gretchen talk about why she left the legal system to become a writer, why she wanted to write clear and succinct ideas unlike the legalese she used to use, whether she’s been surprised by her overwhelming publishing success, how bad habits breed more bad habits, nutrition is one of the biggest challenges for eating more healthfully, people think habits change incrementally, her support for low-carb living ever since reading Gary Taubes’ 2010 book Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It, the huge health effects she saw eating low-carb, why it’s so difficult to make changes in your habits when you know something is good for you to do, the loopholes we use to excuse our bad habits, the convenience vs. inconvenience strategy for changing your habits, my previous interview with Dr. Brian Wansink in Episode 279, anything that seems impure turns people off, how the “buzziness” of cravings goes away if you resist it and abstain, some people who are really tempted do better to have none, if someone can moderate with no issues then they can have a little and be satisfied, the evil office donut bringer, the delicious, satisfying foods you get to eat on a low-carb diet makes it easier to change your habits, planning helps keep you in control, her friend’s “pie” story, why it’s good to fail small not big and to show compassion towards yourself when you fall, why having a finish line goal can actually be detrimental to permanent habit-changing, how people who get within 5-10 pounds of their weight loss goal tend to stop and drift away, the health changes she’s seen in her 70-something year old father since he switched to low-carb, her “Four Tendencies” quiz, her podcast with her and her sister cleaning up her sister’s closet, how cleaning up the clutter as “The Fly Lady Marla Cilley recommends helps improve your habits, and a whole lot more!

One of the biggest cultural phenomenons over the past decade has been the advent of weight loss reality television shows like The Biggest Loser. The images of morbidly obese contestants running on treadmills and eating healthy are meant to inspire and give hope to a nation of people wanting to lose weight. But for one of the former contestants on the show, what goes on behind-the-scenes of the highly-profitable television show is utterly disgusting. Her name is Kai Hibbard and you might remember her as the runner-up winner in Season 3. But she was so mortified at the way the contestants were treated by the trainers and producers that she decided to speak out against the public fat shaming they not only allowed but encouraged.

Listen in as Jimmy and Kai have a stunning chat about how she never had an issue with her weight growing up, how she was always active although she was getting bigger, how she had never seen The Biggest Loser before she was chosen to be a contestant, how she never let her size get in the way she felt about herself, how being on television taught her to start loathing her body, why she doesn’t think the show is about being an inspiration, the crazy tactics people did to produce weight loss, how they kept putting her face on their products years after she was off the show, the lack of after show aftercare with former contestants, the challenge on her season where she was put on a horse track starting in the livestock stall that she believes was fat shaming by the producers, why shaming people doesn’t work to motivate people, how social media is leading the charge at combatting fat shaming at the grassroots level, her concerns with Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel campaign, why what people eat and how they look are nobody else’s business, how she became very ill on the show and was told to suck it up and exercise anyway, how the product sponsorships pushed low-fat, high-carb Frankenfoods on the contestants, how she eats a real foods-based Paleoish diet, how she has to be careful of too structured eating lest she falls back into the habits she learned on the show, the health issues she dealt with as a result of being on The Biggest Loser, how she never had thyroid issues before being on the show but still deals with it, the weight relapses she has had over the years since being on the show, the self-care choices she made to take care of herself, and the other former contestants that have now come forward to join her speaking out against fat shaming.

We live in an incredibly strange world these days when the food supply has become so bastardized that we have to use a qualifier like “real” to describe what we mean by the word “food.” But it’s undeniable that the further and further away from real food we have gotten over the past few decades, the more and more obesity and chronic disease has taken hold impacting tens of millions of people worldwide. This is something that has become greatly concerning to a Brisbane, Australia-based consumer health advocate named David Gillespie (listen to Jimmy’s previous interviews with David on the podcast in Episode 761, Episode 592, and Episode 219).

David has watched how the food companies have devised a clever plan to replace the most expensive real food ingredients with cheaper, industrialized foods comprised of mainly sugar, vegetable oils, and processed grains and promote them to the public as healthy with the blessing of the major health organizations. He’s written a brand new book about this topic entitled Eat Real Food: The Only Solution To Permanent Weight-Loss And Disease Prevention (currently only available in paper form in Australia, but the e-book version is available for download in the United States). Listen in as Jimmy and David have a compelling conversation about how the food supply has become changed so radically and what we can do to turn things around by switching back to real food again for the sake of our weight and health.
