710: Brandon And Megan Keatley Help Satisfy Your Primal Cravings

guests

CrossFit instructors, gym owners, and food bloggers Brandon and Megan Keatley are our guests today in Episode 710 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

cover We head down to the deep South today in Jimmy Moore’s home state of South Carolina to speak with a dynamic husband-wife duo in the Paleo community you may not have heard much about before. They are Brandon and Megan Keatley from the “Health-Bent Paleo Recipes” blog and living Paleo since 2007 spreading the word in the Columbia, South Carolina area. They’re opening a brand new CrossFit gym this summer and they recently released their debut book on Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint Publishing called Primal Cravings: Your Favorite Foods Made Paleo. Yes, that’s a picture of a hamburger on the front cover! Listen in as Jimmy speaks with his fellow Southerners Brandon and Megan about how much they abhor Paleo perfectionism, why they have starch in many of their recipes (as well as many very low-carb recipes), how they wanted to convey healthy “all-American” comfort foods, and so much more. ENJOY!

709: Brooke Alpert Shares The Benefits That Come From A Sugar Detox

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61108PM_zpsa72eeb8b

Registered dietitian and author Brooke Alpert is our guest today in Episode 709 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61054PM_zps3120a52b It’s taken a while for mainstream conventional wisdom to come down hard on the negative health implications of consuming sugar and foods that turn to sugar in the body, but it is finally starting to get a much-deserved black eye. Through the great work of people like Dr. Robert Lustig and Gary Taubes, among others, the sweet stuff has lost some of its luster and today’s podcast interview guest is doing her part to spread that message even further. She is a New York City-based nutritional health expert named Brooke Alpert from “B Nutritious.” Brooke has authored a fabulous new book in 2013 entitled The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger that has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show. Listen in as Jimmy and Brooke engage in a fabulous conversation about why sugar is probably not such a good idea to be consuming in your diet, the health consequences resulting from excess sugar intake, the healthfulness of including quality fats in your diet and so much more! This is one sweet interview that won’t leave you stuffed.

708: Bill Lagakos Defends The Reputation Of The Poor, Misunderstood Calorie

ScreenShot2013-08-04at60937PM_zps6c3fde71

Nutritional biochemist and author Bill Lagakos is our guest today in Episode 708 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61310PM_zps29451976 Before we get into today’s featured interview, Jimmy wanted to share a quick conversation with one of his Twitter followers named Joe Anastasi who shockingly shared last week that he felt like he had to switch away from his high-fat, low-carb diet to a high-carb, low-fat diet so his cholesterol numbers would fall into the “preferred rate” range to get the life insurance coverage he needs to take care of his family. Needless to say, Joe is not happy about doing this, but he feels like he had no other choice. Listen in and Jimmy and Joe talk about this critical topic and invite YOUR input and personal experience about dealing with getting life and health insurance.

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61310PM_zps29451976 In today’s featured interview, we’ve got a rising star in the low-carb and Paleo communities with a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry and Physiology and a researcher into issues such as obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance named Dr. William “Bill” Lagakos, PhD from the “Calories Proper” blog. There’s been a lot of debate in recent years about the role calories play in nutrition which is what led Bill to write a simple little book entitled The Poor, Misunderstood Calorie to educate people on this subject that has been used to justify the promotion of a low-fat, high-carb diet. Check out this awesome conversation between Jimmy and Bill about the distinction between the definition of a calorie biochemically vs. nutritionally, the importance of the quality of calories consumed, the vital role that fats play in the diet, and so much more! The calorie apologists are gonna hate what Bill Lagakos has to share in this interview. Tune in to hear his defense of the reputation of the poor, misunderstood calorie. And don’t miss his upcoming appearance on the LIVE “Ask The Low-Carb Experts” podcast on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7PM ET taking on the topic “All Things Calories (Calories 201).”

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61018PM_zpsdcfbed5a

Paleo nutritional therapist and author Diana Rodgers is our guest today in Episode 707 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61212PM_zps7f6e4d66 We return this week after taking a few weeks off while Jimmy Moore was away on vacation. He’s relaxed, refreshed and ready to go with more fantastic interviews with the leading voices in the world of health. Before we get into our main interview today, first we want to share a brief conversation Jimmy had with former podcast guest Cathy Payne (who appeared on the show with her husband Jon back in Episode 344) from “Broad River Pastures” in Georgia. Cathy has started a new Indiegogo campaign called “Help Save Heritage Livestock Breeds with Broad River Pastures” where she is trying to preserve various breeds of farm animals that have become endangered by the growth of factory farming. She believes the diversity of these animal food sources is critical to maintaining healthy meat sources in the years to come. Listen in as Jimmy and Cathy share about this critically important subject for everyone who believes in the sanctity of real food. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THIS EFFORT!

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61212PM_zps7f6e4d66 Today we welcome back Diana Rodgers from “Radiance Nutrition” for another great interview (listen to her first appearance on the podcast in Episode 534) sharing about her brand new August 6, 2013 book release Paleo Lunches and Breakfasts On the Go: The Solution to Gluten-Free Eating All Day Long with Delicious, Easy and Portable Primal Meals. Diana is committed to helping people understand the importance of food sustainability, the powerful principles of Paleo living and making this way of eating more accessible and implementable in the lives of real people. Listen in as Jimmy and Diana have a delightful conversation about these topics and more!

706: Dr. George Diggs Teaching Evolutionary Health To Future Medical School Students

diggs

Botanist/evolutionary biology researcher and professor Dr. George Diggs, Jr. is our guest today in Episode 706 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

diggs-book In the many interviews we have shared on this podcast, we often lament that there is very little education provided to future physicians on the subject of nutrition as it relates to health. This obvious problem with healthcare is partly to blame for why obesity and chronic illness continues to become worse and worse. But thankfully there are people like today’s interview guest Dr. George Diggs, Jr., a professor in the Department of Biology and Center for Environmental Studies at Austin College in Sherman, Texas as well as a Research Associate at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, who are seeking to change that.

Jimmy met Dr. Diggs in person at the Ancestral Health Symposium and became enamored by this Paleo-minded professor teaching future medical school students about evolutionary nutritional health principles. In fact, he co-wrote a book with his like-minded colleague Dr. Kerry Brock that is being used as a textbook in a classroom setting called The Hunter-Gatherer Within: Health and the Natural Human Diet that is the first-of-its-kind incorporating Paleo health concepts into a mainstream educational setting. Cool!

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Diggs discuss his interest in the intersection of diet/nutrition, evolution, and health over the past decade, why he decided to write a book about evolutionary health, why the non-profit Botanical Research Institute of Texas published their first-ever diet and health book, how this book is being used in college classrooms to teach about Paleo principles, why the target audience for the book is the “non-science” college students and the general public, the health problems associated with our carbohydrate-laden modern diet, the problem with consuming plants that have defended themselves chemically against predators and so much more! This is a fascinating discussion fans of Paleo, primal and low-carb diets will eat up.

This is a fascinating discussion fans of Paleo, primal and low-carb diets will eat up.
