There’s been a lot of accusations thrown around in the past few years regarding the impact that a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet is having on the gut health of those who choose to eat this way. It’s been especially strong from various vocal members of the Paleo community who have been promoting the consumption of the so-called “safe starches” and other such foods to feed the good bacteria in the gut. But some of the suggestions that have been made don’t sit well with a Walnut Creek, California-based functional medicine practitioner named Dr. Michael Ruscio who understands the need for patient individuality in treatment and that customizing a plan to take care of the microbiome while also being mindful of blood sugar and other health markers is critically important to making sure the patient is doing the right thing for them.
