Welcome back to a new year and a new season of the Internet’s most original and best low-carb podcast, “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!”

As we greet a new year, Jimmy reflects that it was New Year’s Day in 2004 when he resolved to lose an extra 180 LBS he was carrying around by following the Atkins diet. Not only did he stick it out and lose it all in 12 months, but four years later he’s STILL going strong maintaining his lofty weight loss. CONGRATULATIONS JIMMY!

In segment 1 of today’s show Jimmy reflects on that year, what his temptations were, and how he overcame them. He includes how his weight loss success has also transformed his career by giving him a platform to make his low-carb enthusiasm into a thriving business. In Segment 2, Jimmy shares the Top 10 Reasons why sugar will destroy your health. Not just sugar, mind you, but all its derivative cousins like HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup), too!

WELCOME BACK and as always please leave your feedback in the comments section below! :)

TRANSCRIPT OF EPISODE 101

Coming up…sugar may quite literally be destroying your health.

Hey everyone and welcome back to Episode 101 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” It’s been a while since we’ve been together on the air with brand new podcasts and I’m so glad to finally be back with you bringing you the very best news and commentary about the healthy low-carb lifestyle on the Internet. Stick around a while because we’re ready to take the positive message of livin’ la vida low-carb to the masses in a super-charged, high-octane way. Get ready for that and a whole lot more!

If you are new to “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” then welcome to the most exciting health podcast show you’ll ever hear. My name is Jimmy Moore and I made it my New Year’s resolution in 2004 to lose weight, but this time was going to be different than before. Rather than going on yet another low-fat, low-calorie diet as I had always been told would be the ONLY way to shed the pounds, I instead tried something that seemed so radical and outrageous because it went against everything I had ever been taught about diet and health. What did I do? I went on the Atkins diet.

Yep, that would be the same low-carb diet that the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins devised to give people a healthy alternative to the traditional low-fat diets that had failed to produce the long-term weight loss success that had eluded me my entire life. Sure, I had lost weight before by limiting my fat and calories, but the constant hunger pangs and irritability always got the best of me and I was right back where I started from and worse.

But then I read “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution” and discovered a brand new way of eating that allowed you to eat meats, cheeses, eggs, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries, and a whole array of delicious and filling whole foods like our original ancestors used to eat. No longer did I need to worry about counting calories or fat grams and you just can’t emphasize how freeing that is when you begin the low-carb lifestyle. After about a week or so of eating this way, you quickly realize all the negativity you have heard about low-carb is dead wrong and that this is the way you were meant to live all along. That’s freedom!

When I started on this journey, I weighed in at a very hefty 410 pounds on my 6’3” body frame. I was wearing size 62-inch waist pants, 5XL shirts, and took prescription medications for three different health problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and breathing issues. Getting in and out of my car was a joke as my belly would push up against the steering wheel so tight that I didn’t really need my hands to drive. My weight was the major issue with my health and I was just a ticking time bomb waiting to explode if I didn’t do something quick.

Well, I DID do something when I started the Atkins diet and I committed to making this not just my New Year’s resolution, but also my new LIFE resolution. Even when I weighed in at over 400 pounds, I knew if my life was truly gonna change that it would have to be a complete turnaround from my current lifestyle into a permanent and healthy one instead. And so began the journey of what would become the single-greatest accomplishment of my entire life. In the span of just one year, I was able to lose a grand total of 180 pounds. I lost 30 pounds the first month, 40 more in month two and even survived a 10-week stretch right dab in the middle where my weight stalled out. But I kept going and eventually became a triple-digit low-carb weight loss success story.

That experience changed my life in so many ways that I stand in awe of what has happened ever since. It began with my LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blog which I created to help educate, encourage, and inspire others who wish to pursue this same journey that I undertook for themselves to lose weight and get healthy. What started off as a simple hobby quickly turned into a full-time business that now allows me to devote my energy and efforts into providing quality content to literally tens of thousands of readers a day. In fact, January 2008 alone is expected to surpass a quarter million pageviews. Incredible!

I published a book called “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year” in October 2005 to talk about my low-carb weight loss and provide inspiration to anyone struggling in their efforts to be healthy. Although it was self-published, thousands of copies have already been sold and it’s still selling well in 2008 at Booklocker.com as well as Amazon.com. I have two new book projects in the works this year that I am working on which I’ll tell you about when they’re ready to be released.

In October 2006, this podcast show you are listening to right now was born and we are already over 100 episodes strong. Then in August 2007, my wife Christine and I began making some fun and engaging YouTube videos about low-carb to share with others what this way of eating has done for us. And, most recently, I launched a brand new sugar-free, low-carb raspberry dark chocolate bar called “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Bar” from the makers of ChocoPerfection. It’s a rich, decadent and healthy alternative to the sugary bars that unfortunately dominate store shelves. I’ll provide a link to all of these ventures I am involved with in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com.

Life has become quite busy, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still livin’ la vida low-carb. Actually, I’m even more enthusiastic about it now than ever before. I just passed four years of sugar-free living and I couldn’t be happier. It simply amazes me that despite all the evidence pointing to how unhealthy it is for people to consume sugar, this little white granular substance along with all the chemically-based versions of it that can be found in most of the food products we buy today is still given a virtual free pass by many of the so-called health experts in this country because they don’t believe it is such a contributing factor to obesity and health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and worse. It doesn’t help matters that they cite flawed studies showing sugar is good for you which is just plain idiotic nonsense. That’s a big reason why the average American consumes a whopping 146 pounds of sugar every year! You heard that right–146 POUNDS A YEAR PER PERSON! Ay-yi-yi!

Nevertheless, people who have researched the detrimental impact sugar is having on the body know that it is much worse for you to consume than fat ever will be and has certain addictive properties which lead to obesity and its related diseases. We should justifiably thank Dr. Atkins for bringing this issue to the forefront of the American health debate.

One of my faithful readers at my LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blog e-mailed me the most unique list of reasons why you should avoid eating sugar and it even includes all the references to support each and every claim. The list was compiled by anti-sugar author and spokeswoman Dr. Nancy Appleton. My reader said her life has changed ever since she was able to “kick that sugar habit” after applying what she learned from my blog and in the chapter I wrote about sugar in my book. Here’s what she wrote: “If people would just realize what sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and white flour does to their bodies, they’d avoid it like rat poison.” Amen to that one! It’s been over one year since she quit sugar and my reader has lost a total of 25 pounds. But more importantly is the fact that she feels better than she has in a very long time. And she’s made the transition in her head about sugar, too. Check out this comment she wrote to me: “The best part is that I don’t even miss sugar. I can walk by the bakery section at Kroger or Wal-Mart and actually get nauseous from the overwhelming smell sugar.”

WOW! That’s such an amazing story of transformation and I can certainly relate now that it’s been four years since I kicked sugar for good, too. I would probably throw up now if I ever consumed more than a spoonful of sugar in one sitting ever again. I don’t even want to THINK about it! My former co-workers knew that I avoid sugar, but they still did everything in their power to try to tempt me with doughnuts, cakes, pies, cupcakes and more. People at my church have been the same way. But I’m livin’ la vida low-carb now and I CAN’T ever have those things again because just one little bite leads to one more and one more and the whole sugar addiction cycle starts up all over again.

People will ask me, “So, you mean you don’t and won’t ever eat sugar like you did before ever again?!” I get that question so much from sincere people who must not think it is humanly possible to ditch sugar forever. My response is delivered with the most honest voice and look I can possibly give when I say, “I can’t and won’t do that to my body ever again and I’m happy to live with that decision for the rest of my life.”

Perhaps you don’t believe in the whole concept of sugar addiction. If that’s you, then listen closely because I have a surefire way to prove it to you. Take this test: Don’t eat anything with sugar in it for an entire month. No sugar whatsoever, including starchy foods like potatoes, rice, and pasta which simply turn to sugar inside the body when consumed! Then get back with me in 30 days and let’s talk about all those feelings like you wanted to die, the intense withdrawal symptoms and I’ll be waiting on your apology because you will then know that I was right!

If you don’t struggle with your weight or just don’t care a lick in the world, then you have no concept of how monumental the decision to stop eating sugar is. It’s lifechanging because it allows you to experience a new world that is free from the physical and even emotional bondage that sugar puts you though. The negative impact of sugar on our bodies is worse than any of us probably even realize. Dr. Appleton has an impressive list of 146 reasons why sugar is ruining your health that I’ll link to in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. But here are my top 10 favorites that should make you wanna stop eating sugar for good.

1. Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides.

2. Sugar can weaken eyesight.

3. Sugar can produce an acidic digestive tract.

4. Sugar can cause premature aging.

5. Sugar contributes to obesity.

6. Sugar can cause heart disease.

7. Sugar is enemy #1 of the bowel movement.

8. Sugar can cause depression.

9. Sugar feeds cancer.

10. Sugar is an addictive substance.

Do you have a story about how you overcame your sugar addiction like my reader shared? Then please feel free to e-mail me at livinlowcarbman@charter.net to share what you did to do it once and for all. Be sure to include when you stopped eating sugar, how long you have been off of it, and what life is like for you today since you ended your addiction. I’d love feature your story at my blog or podcast, so let me hear from you.

That’s all the time we have for today and it was so good being back with you again for Episode 101 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Come back again on Thursday as we continue to say it loud and say it proud that we’re low-carbin’ for life, baby! So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!
