Could a famous singer REALLY send a diet book flying off the shelves?
Welcome to yet another episode of the Internet’s premiere low-carb podcast–it’s “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!”
Episode 55 is a very special occasion…Jimmy shares a book review he wrote about a year ago of what has now become a newly-repopularized diet book whose name alone will make us suspend our “clean language” advisory for a day.
That book is called “Skinny B*tch” and we only have Victoria Beckham (formerly known as Posh Spice from the Spice Girls) to blame for setting the superficial media “dietsphere” afire by being photographed with a copy of said book. Oh my, what a world we live in!
Listen in to today’s show as our host Jimmy gives the post-mortem of this sad and frustrating vegan-themed diet book that has zoomed up the sales charts of Amazon UK and Amazon.com.
Yo, Brad Pitt, I’ve got the perfect diet book for you to carry around with you!

THANKS for listening!
Today I want to talk about something that happened last week that’s got the diet book industry buzzing. You may have even heard about this in the media because it involved British pop music sensation Victoria Beckham. Yes, that would be the former Posh Spice from The Spice Girls and the stick-thin wife of the famous soccer player David Beckham. Anywho, Victoria was being followed by the paparazzi last week when they caught a snapshot of her purchasing and reading a copy of a diet book released in 2006 called “Skinny Bitch.” The next day, the British press picked up the story and ran with it followed quickly by a few American newspapers as well. All this attention brought on by Victoria Beckham caused sales of “Skinny Bitch” to soar from nearly 80,000 on Amazon UK all the way up to #10–a 37,000 percent increase in just one day. Impressive to say the least. Similarly, the book rose to #209 on the American Amazon.com web site. Why this woman who clearly doesn’t have a reason to lose weight would feel compelled to buy a diet book like “Skinny Bitch” is beyond me, but we live in a culture where entertainers dictate what people purchase. Hey, Brad Pitt, can I suggest a book for you to carry around with you on your next movie set? It’s called “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb.” Hee hee!
Getting back to the “Skinny Bitch” book for a moment, I was already familiar with it prior to Posh Spice giving it the Midas touch last week. It was about one year ago that I reviewed this book at my blog and let me tell you, it ain’t for the faint of heart if you are a supporter of the Atkins diet. You see, the authors of the book–Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman–are militant vegans who decided to enter the world of diet books to let out their pent-up anger and frustrations about meat on an unsuspecting world. Allow me to share with you my review of this book so you can get a better understanding of what this book is really all about and the Pandora’s box that Victoria Beckham has now unleashed on all those poor people who decided to buy “Skinny Bitch” for themselves.
Here’s my review:
Okay, somebody tell me something. Why in the world would two very attractive women write a book about weight loss when neither one of them have spent a day in their life struggling with their weight? Hmmmmm? What a crock of you know what! Well, that’s exactly what Los Angeles, CA-natives Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman have done with their in-your-face attempt to explain to us why women who are overweight got that way. The book is called “Skinny Bitch” and at least they describe themselves accurately! If that extremely profane and totally unnecessary title doesn’t grab your attention right away, then perhaps the world’s longest subtitle might: ‘A No-Nonsense, Tough-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabulous.’ Oooooookay, so this isn’t gonna be the same old kind of diet book we have all become accustomed to in the past. That in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing per se, but it does appear these two ladies have a rather large axe to grind and you quickly figure that out as soon as you start reading this book with all of its disrespectful slamma-jamma graphic idiolect.
In an obscenity-laden wasteland of literary refuse, Barnouin and Freedman, one a former model who has studied nutrition and the other a former agent for Ford Model who had studied diet and nutrition for more than a decade, quickly let you know what they think about a wide variety of health-related topics. Some are ones that I would agree strongly with them about (such as “Soda is liquid Satan”) and others I obviously disagree just as strongly with them on (like “You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin”). Well, ladies, as much as I agree with you about sugary sodas, I guess you’re gonna have to call me a “moron” because that’s exactly what the Atkins diet did for me! I was transformed from a 410-pound ticking time bomb on the verge of a certain heart attack down to an athletic and healthy 225-pound man ready to live a long and healthy life in just ONE year. Now I’m livin’ la vida low-carb and I’ll never be the same again! But for Barnouin and Freedman, none of that matters to them because they are radical members of the minority in this country who choose to eat a vegan-only diet. No meat, no eggs, no dairy, no coffee, not even diet soda because they oppose artificial sweeteners, too–NOTHING that even touches or comes close to meat! They’re even boycotting “beets” because they sound too much like meats! Ha ha!
Their recipe for healthy living includes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables (all of which are acceptable on the low-carb lifestyle by the way!) and now they’re trying to convince women that they too should turn to the vegan lifestyle to become what they’ve always wanted to be–skinny, happy, and ready to take on life. Oh brother! If the language and attitude presented in this book are even just a smidgen of what Barnouin and Freedman are like in real life, then they can take their good looks and ram their pretty little heads down a hole in the ground because nobody’s gonna want to be around them. Could it be that meatless diet of theirs is actually making them cranky and irritable because they’re constantly hungry ALL THE TIME?! Hee hee! Freedman admits that she started down the vegetarian road when she received some literature from the radical leftist anti-meat group PETA (which stands for People Eating Tasty Animals, by the way!). She was so moved by the “torture” of the animals and convinced herself that people were getting sick because of eating meat that she decided to write this book so she could help others ‘’make intelligent and educated decisions about food.'’ Awww, ain’t that just soooo sweet of her? She cares so much about the fat people getting sicky wicky that she wanted to help. Give me a BLANKITY-BLANK break (see, even THEY are rubbing off on me after reading their disgusting book!).
The “Skinny Bitch” approach can be narrowed down to one simple statement: Starve yourself until nobody can stand to be around you anymore and then write a book sharing every single little thought that you would like to tell someone if they were there to listen to you. If the “Skinny Bitch” lifestyle is something you can live with and be happy with, then I say GO FOR IT! Do it for the rest of your irritable life and become that thin person you’ve always wanted to be. Nobody will want to be around you, but at least you’ll be skinny! According to the sample menu, you get to eat fresh apple juice with oatmeal, nuts, and fruit for breakfast, grilled soy cheese with a tomato slice and small salad for lunch, and fake ground beef, vegan mashed potatoes, with corn and spinach for supper. Hey, where’s the snacks? Where’s the sweets? “Skinny Bitch”, please tell me there’s more! There’s gotta be more to life than eating this way every single day, of every single week, of every single month, of every single year, for THE REST OF MY LIFE! AAAAAAACK! Oh my goodness, I’m awake now. Gee, that was the WORST nightmare I’ve ever had!
That’s it for Episode 55 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Thank you for sharing a few moments of your day with me and I invite you to listen on Mondays and Thursdays for more podcasts about the amazingly healthy low-carb lifestyle. Come back on Thursday as I present yet another interview with one of the bariatric physicians from the Nashville obesity conference I attended earlier this month. You’re gonna LOVE it! So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

From over 400 pounds to 230, Jimmy Moore is

I’m not surprised since whatever her name is isn’t known for brains. In fact, she is only known as the current wife of D. Beckham. She’ll fit right in in a state where a so-called healthy pets law(AB 1634) designed to ELIMINATE pets in the state is the current flavor of the month. Castrate Levine, the bill’s author, and spay David Beckham’s wife before she whelps a litter of retarded kids courtesy of her vegan diet.
Keep sharing the love, Mathew!
Well, call me a moron, because I would rather eat low carb than low fat. I will never go back to that type of dieting; that kind of deprivation brings on binges. Pass the meat, please!!!
Linda you moron! LOL! I’d rather be a moron who’s healthy and NEVER hungry than an onery vegan who is angry all the time from nutrition deprivation!
I became vegan at the age of 40, over 5 years ago. I lost about 40 lbs of excess weight and I am healthier than I have been in years. When I was in my mid 30s I would try to go hiking with my kids. I would make it maybe a few hundred yards before I needed to take a break and I felt like crap. A couple of years after going vegan I hiked 26 miles with my son to the highest point in Utah. The only thing I changed was my diet - no exercise at all. Also, my cholesterol dropped from over 230 to around 140. It was easy to become vegan after 40 years of eating meat with pretty much every meal. I enjoy food more now than I ever have. I now weight 190 lbs and bicycle about 120 miles a week. I started cycling a little over a year ago when my daughter gave me a bicycle. I found that I really loved it. I have been thinking about joining a spa. Not to lose weight really, but just because I think I would really enjoy working out.
If you really think that being vegan is un-healthy or hard you are very much mistaken. That is what I thought. I became vegan because my wife and I were worried about out daughter who had become vegan. We believed all the misinformation. The more she learned the more I became convinced that I was eating crap and needed to give veganism a serious go for myself. It seemed hard for the first couple of months, but it was not long before I started feeling MUCH better and really enjoying myself.
CONGRATULATIONS on your success, Stan! You are the first reasonable-sounding vegan I have met and I am so glad to know you found what works for you and you’re doing it! WAY TO GO!
I have to echo Stan’s sentiments. I read a weight loss book to be supportive of a family member who has tried everything and wanted to know what I thought from a medical standpoint. I was impressed with the book and tried eating that way myself (essentially vegan, high nutrient, plant-based, or whatever you want to call it). In addition, I looked at a ton of research both ways.
The research supporting eating one’s veggies in high quantities is impressive and, anecdotally, I have never felt better.
Also, I am a mother of 3. When my 6-month-old was 4.5 months old, I was asked to help a friend rate some scales by having my weight and body fat measured on three of the scales and then by going to a hydrostatic testing place. My body fat was 18% (16% is considered elite athlete level for a woman). I thought that was incredible considering that my post-partum exercise routine has been limited to chasing my children (of which I’ve had three in four years). It is the lowest it has been in my life and I can only attribute it to the fact that I eat a TON of fruits and vegetables every day.
My children eat about 90% vegan (I don’t limit them at all at parties, for example) and are very healthy. I worried about things like bone density, anemia, etc. as any fastidious mother would, so I had my daughter fully checked out at her 4-year visit to the doc. Guess what? Despite the fact that she had no meat and almost no dairy, she was not anemic, has great bone density relative to her peers and has a total cholesterol of 130. She is at about the 30th percentile for weight, which concerned me a bit, but the pediatrician said to expect her overall percentile to go down as American children become more and more obese. On top of that, she is happy, energetic and learning to read.
Sometimes I splurge and have ice cream or cheese, but I never feel as great when I do.
Anyway, I know it is anecdotal, but I just wanted to put it out there.
Again, if you can find something that works for you and you can do it for the rest of your life, then GO FOR IT! You won’t find me standing in your way of success. GREAT JOB!!!
I’m vegan and have never felt more healthy. I believe it’s the best decision I’ve ever made for myself. I no longer have exercise induced asthma but instead have increased energy and can just go, go, go. I feel more alert. I look and feel younger. I used to get sick at least once a year and haven’t gotten sick once since becoming vegan over two years ago. I actually eat more than I ever have and, too, enjoy food more. I don’t see how anyone could say “nutrient-deprived” when it’s known that fruits and vegetables are the most nutrient-dense foods available. And we aren’t deprived. We have everything. . .even the most delicious ice creams where noone would tell the difference, yet they are still healthier in that they have no artery-clogging cholesterol or saturated fat. My personal favorite at the moment is Rice Cream in carrot cake flavor. I also lime Mudd Slide. And the ice cream sandwiches are amazing, too.
I at one time hit 200 pounds. I now eat a lot of wonderful food often. . .more than I ever have. . .and maintain a healthy weight of 135-140 (I’m 5′10″) that I arrived at naturally.
My boyfriend, who was once an avid fan of the carnivorous diet and who used to try to challenge me, witnessed the benefits I was gaining and stopped eating meat and continues to be in awe with how healthy he feels. He raves about how he used to always feel tired and never does anymore.
I guess it just goes to show you can’t really judge until you’ve been there. . .
CONGRATULATIONS on your success on the vegan diet, Jackie. But that’s not really the point.
My philosophy is to find what works for you, follow that plan exactly, then keep doing it forever. If you want to eat vegan, that’s fine by me.
But what is not acceptable to me are the militant radical vegans like the authors of this book who choose to go around thrashing a meat-eating diet just because they disagree with it personally.
Regardless of what I think about veganism, I would never stand in the way of someone who wanted to eat that way if they want. It’s their choice about their diet, so who am I to stand in their way?
Again, CONGRATULATIONS on your success and I wish you continued luck keeping your weight off and continuing to improve your health for the rest of your life.
So I guess it would be fair to refer to you as a “militant Atkin’s fan.” Pretty hypocritical. I mean it’s perfectly acceptable for you to thrash vegans just because you disagree with it personally (referring to them as “wacky,” calling them irritable, cranky, hungry all the time, and saying nobody wants to be around them) but vice versa it’s not acceptable. . .
Then you want to point out that they never had a weight problem, as if to say they have no room to write on it. But you never have tried the lifestyle to know that the eating options and portions are endless and we are very happy people and, thus, you neither have room to write on it.
Too many contradictions end up losing credibility points.
You say that these women never had a weight problem? Of course they haven’t, they likely never ate enormous amounts of bad food like most people with ‘weight problems’.
These girls have high metabolism because they eat the nutrient rich foods. When you eat well, you are well. It is exhausting to hear people complain about how fat they are. Then they turn around and eat a pile of bad food. Stop eating garbage! You are fat because you eat processed, fatty, sugar laden, hormone injected foods and WAY TOO MUCH of it! The stomach is the size of your fist. Think about that next time you want to shovel down a large pizza or eat a 16 oz steak. We have an obese and overweight society because of what people eat, not because they were born fat.
People need to take pride in their health and the way they look. However they choose to get there is their own decision.

I too had tried atkins years ago and ended up with terrible cholesterol, yo-yo weight gain and loss, lousy triglycerides and rising blood pressure. I switched to a vegan no added oil no refined anything (mcdougall, ornish, esselstyn etc.) type diet over eight months ago and quickly lost 50 pounds, brought my ldl down to 50, and got rid of meds for blood pressure, reflux, and cholesterol. I’m glad to see you promote no refined sugars or processed foods as that’s a key part of a good vegan diet as well, but the high fat component of your diet is something that I think will come back to haunt you later in life. It’s not just about weight loss, but what’s happening in your veins over the next 20 years.
The author seems to be the one that is cranky and irritable. True, the language in the book was snarky, but it was to grab the reader’s attention. This is a different type of diet book, so it’s written differently. I feel that the author of this post holds a lot of resentment, because the Skinny Bitches have always been thin. But just because someone is thin, doesn’t make them healthy. They noticed their bodies changing, and becoming healthier through their new diets. And author, I think it’s fantastic that you lost that much weight. But a diet full of burgers and cheese and other fatty junk isn’t going to make you healthy, either. Thin, maybe. I’m not vegan, but there is compelling evidence to make me reconsider.. But i’d never, ever do the Atkin’s diet. My arteries cringe just hearing about it.
Your arteries would do much better eating a high-fat, low-carb Atkins diet than a high-carb, low-fat vegetarian diet. Hands down!
I suppose you’re right, but no one in this thread really thinks that either! Defensive, defensive.
More vegan PROPAGANDA by “Jackie”
Actually the food that holds the tiltle of most nutrient dense is grass fed RED MEAT.
And also saturated fat and cholesterol do NOT clog arteries. This is NOT how atherosclerosis works and you obviously do not know this fact.
Jackie is not knowledgeable of the 18 clinical dietary intervention trials to date in which NONE found saturate dfat to increase CHD mortality or incidence
She also is ver unfamiliar with all the cholesterol - lowering trials which been repeatedly shown to be complete failures for lowering CHD mortality or incidence Look up LRC-CPPT, A to Z trial , J-LIT , ENHANCE.
Or she could read Anthony Colpo’s book and see the 1,400 references to randomized clinical trials..
I am sorry to inform you Jackie that you are the one who has been scammed by vegan propaganda
The whole low saturated fat m,ovement was incorrect from the start It is based on the fraudulent and tainted Seven Countries Study conducted by a misguided fanatical nut named Ancel Keys who DELIBERATELY OMITTED data from nations available at the time that CONTRADICTED his FALSE views.
Please look into this.
