Our host Jimmy introduces you to championship weightlifting podcaster (and high school wrestling coach) Nathan Stanley and his amazing success applying the low-carb nutritional approach to athletic training. In Episode 51 today, Jimmy takes a look at the sad state of obesity now and in the future as predicted in this quote from a United States health official:
“Today’s younger generation will have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents for the first time in modern history unless we intervene.”
WOW! What can we do about this seemingly hopeless problem? Don’t you know Jimmy has a few ideas to share with these so-called health “experts” who think nothing can be done about obesity. Think again!

Hey, speaking of that, have you heard the brand new contributor at our fellow Grasshopper New Media show called “The Health Hacks Podcast?” Go to www.HealthHacksPodcast.com to listen to Nathan Stanley talk about how livin’ la vida low-carb has transformed him into a kettlebell lifting champion. I’m not kidding! Nathan is also a high school wrestling coach following his All-American college career. What I especially love about this incredible man is he is a big time low-carber and not ashamed to talk about how this way of eating helps him keep his athletic body in tip-top shape. Listen to this sampling of Nathan Stanley for yourself as he shares his story of livin’ la vida low-carb:
“When people find out that I’m on a low carb diet, one comment I always hear is how its a great diet for losing weight, but it doesn’t give you enough energy to exercise or compete in a sport. People are stunned when I inform them that my performance has actually increased as a result of reducing carbohydrates in my diet and ensuring I am consuming enough protein. For those of you that think you can’t perform at a high level athletically and remain on a low carb diet, I’d like to share a few thoughts that I have on the subject.
As a former college wrestler who competed during the 1990’s, the idea of low-fat and high carbohydrate dieting was ingrained in me from start to finish. Rice and black beans and pasta was the staple of my poorly planned in-season diet. Of course, the whole justification for this diet was based on a study of US distance runners conducted during the during the 1970’s. Anyone who knows how competitive, or uncompetitive US distance runners have been in international competition, could see the flaw in studying them as the ideal in high performance. Nevertheless, the fallacy that in order to be a high performing athlete you need to have a high intake of carbs is still entrenched in the conventional wisdom of the athletic community.
As low carb/high protein diets have become more prevalent, the number of resources for athletes that want to compete with a low carb training table has grown considerably. Probably the most popular are The Paleo Diet for Athletes by Dr. Loren Cordain and the The Zone Diet by Barry Sears. Many athletic communities have embraced these meal plans not only for the reduction in body fat that many people experience, but also for the increased athletic performance they seem to foster. Although these are very popular choices, one is by no means limited to them. I myself follow a plan similar to the one outlined in the book Protein Power by Drs. Michael and Mary Eades and have heard of many athletes that have found optimal results from a diet that consists of a higher percentage of fat and lower percentage of carbs than advocated in the Zone Diet.”
Isn’t Nathan amazing! I am personally glad to know there are people like him in this world and I encourage you to support his efforts to spread the low-carb message to the masses just like I am. Today I want to discuss the issue of obesity and the sudden sense of urgency that health leaders have about addressing it. We hear about life expectancy rates falling for the first time in American history and that many parents may begin to outlive their children because of the illnesses brought on by childhood obesity. The National Institute on Aging said the rate of obesity growth in the United States must be slowed down as soon as possible or else we face bigger problems in the very near future. In fact, one health official painfully admits that “today’s younger generation will have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents for the first time in modern history unless we intervene.”
I have been championing this cause ever since I was able to lose over 180 pounds in 2004 by following a healthy low-carb lifestyle. This is an issue that will not go away if we continue to ignore it, or even worse, keep doing those same things that have been shown to fail over and over again. Obviously what has been tried isn’t working, so we need to begin looking at other option like livin’ la vida low-carb as a serious and viable alternative to the failed low-fat dietary approach. No more excuses, no more “we need more studies,” no more whining and complaining that obesity can’t be beat–we know better because we have been able to implement this proven strategy into our owns lives with remarkable results. Accepting failure is unacceptable and I’ll be danged if I just sit idly by while our so-called health “experts” debate whether low-carb is too dangerous and extreme. If you ask me, the real danger is having tens of millions of people, including a large percentage of children, walking around with a belly protruding out the front of their body like some massive tumor and watching it get bigger and bigger as they stuff their mouths with Big Macs, French Fries, and Coca-Cola! The madness needs to stop and we need to grab this bull by the horns and bring him down or else we will suffer the fatal future consequences of our poor health decisions in the coming years.
The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion stated the obvious in a recent report which said an obese child is more likely to stay obese when they reach adulthood. That’s exactly what happened to me. I was a fat kid my entire childhood and it only got worse as I got older. I am lucky that I was finally able to overcome my obesity problem in my early 30’s before it caused me to suffer major health problems. Nevertheless, others aren’t quite as fortunate to find their solution to their obesity problem. People who are obese are at a higher risk for cancer, asthma, osteoarthritis, stroke, heart disorders, high blood pressure, and even death. The saddest part about all of this is that these symptoms are completely preventable if people who accept personal responsibility for their weight problem and tackle it for themselves. That’s some tough love I’m sharing with you today because it took me a very long time to accept and do something about my own miserable weight problem. I know how hard it is, but hopefully my story will encourage you that it can and MUST be done.
Many people like to blame government health entities and other so-called health “experts” for not doing very much to deal with this problem of obesity as it has gotten dramatically worse. But think about it–why should they? Why do we need the government to step in and tell us that we have to eat a low-fat/low-calorie/portion-controlled diet and work out three hours a day to get healthy? Clearly, that advice is not resonating with the vast majority of Americans based on the rising obesity rates. What we need is to look at all the health options and place them on the table for discussion. That includes livin’ la vida low-carb which right now is all but shunned by much of the health industry despite all the evidence coming out of the research community showing this nutritional approach is just as effective as any other plan out there. What is it going to take for the experts to realize their advice has been a miserable failure? Isn’t it time we start trying something new to help people with their weight problem? Of course it is, which is why I started my LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blog and this podcast show. With all the physical health problems obese people have to deal with as well as the forgotten aspect of being fat, including the painful mental issues of poor self-worth and a lack of confidence, the time is now for us to rally around this issue to give people the help and hope they have been so desperately wanting to find. We have the answer, now we need to share it with them. You may wonder why you should care about this issue if you aren’t fat. Think about it: obesity increases disease, causes your insurance premiums to go up, reduces job productivity, and creates more disabled people which further drains resources that could be in your pocket. Obesity is my problem if I’m the one who is obese. But does that mean I don’t have a responsibility to try to help others deal with their obesity problem if I have found an answer that works for me? Absolutely not! In fact, it is my duty to share with everyone I know my story of success thanks to livin’ la vida low-carb so it can then in turn spur others to enjoy similar results. They sure aren’t gonna hear anything positive about the low-carb lifestyle from the media, I can assure you of that! But don’t worry. Rest assured that Jimmy Moore will keep sharing as long as I have breath to breathe.
That’s it for Episode 51 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Come back on Thursday as I share another great interview from the recent obesity conference I attended in Nashville, TN. You will definitely enjoy it. So, until then, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the US and many other nations around the Globe. Much of it can be curbed through better nutritional education and better diet, but it will take a united effort by any to make an impact. Bravo for your efforts and best wishes for continued success!

THANKS for your efforts in trying to solve this problem, Phil! But I think it goes much further than simply giving a generic “better nutritional education and better diet” advice.
Nobody knows what that means which is why we need more specificity about what is a healthy diet and nutrition. Unity of purpose that people should be given many choices about how to deal with their weight problem is what is sorely needed now more than ever.
I’ll keep advocating this position until it finally makes it to the powers that be. THANKS again for your efforts, Phil! Keep up the GREAT work!
One of the saddest sights is seeing an overweight child. I was a fat kid and it pains me to see children as I once was. I know their hurt and other kids are the harshest critics. We really need to stop the obesity problem and low carb for many will be the solution. Unfortunately, low fat is the way being taught in schools.Keep spreading the word Jimmy. It is people like you that can help. You have helped me.
THANKS, Linda! You are a PRIME example of the lifechanging impact this way of eating can have on people. Keep being that example and sharing with everyone you about the amazing low-carb lifestyle.
