Hello and welcome back for the conclusion of Jimmy Moore’s excellent interview with New York Times journalist and bestselling author Gary Taubes!
In September 2007, Gary published Good Calories, Bad Calories, the book-length version of his groundbreaking 2002 op-ed piece on the subject of the healthy low carb lifestyle entitled “What If It’s All Been A Big Fat Lie?”
In this episode, Gary Taubes continues his discussion of his book, including how much he initially hated that title for his book until his wife convinced him otherwise, the impact of carbohydrate calories on weight, the change of heart that Dr. Andrew Weil has had regarding low-carb, the theories espoused by low-fat diet guru Dr. Dean Ornish, and what can be done to influence the health authorities about the positive impact of low-carb living.
Jimmy continues to ask Gary some great listener-submitted questions as well as a few of his own that are well worth listening in for what he has to say. Take it all in and then share your comments about the Taubes interview below or by calling our listener comment line at (206) 202-6516.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! — But nobody believes us! The sky is truly falling! — But still, nobody believes us!
Great interview — many thanks to Gary and Jimmy both.
THANKS Michael! It was so much fun. Hopefully we’ll get that interview a year from now and see if anything has actually changed. You’re right, Tom. The sky is falling, but nobody cares.
Thanks for getting this interview, Jimmy! And if Gary sees this, thank you as well. Your contributions to the obesity problem can’t be ignored by the mainstream for long. Small victories can eventually lead to big changes!
The reigning views of authority always have the upper hand when it comes to persauation except in the case of addictions. People will not give up their addictions, smoking, drinking etc even when authorities say these things are bad for you. Currently the authority is with low fat high carb diets with the added advantage that people are also addicted to sugar/carbs.
From this position it is hard to break through to even starting a reasonable debate. The low carb community are just about in the same bucket as conspiracy theorist.
I look forward to the day that people like Taubes can make a break through and we can start to see some real research done on the subject.
Great interview Jimmy - and a great book by Taubes !
THANKS TigerEyes! Gary realizes this issue is far bigger than himself which is why he is devoted to sharing about it for as long as he can afford to. There’s not a lot of money in going against the grain, but he’s willing to give a go at it for the sake of helping as many people understand it as possible before it’s too late.
I think that day is coming sooner than you think, Helena. Hopefully we are above conspiracy theorists in the whole chain of command, though.
The day can’t come too soon Jimmy
I’ve been waiting and hoping forever, it seems, for a Gary Taubes appearance on your podcast. When I heard you announce it was coming, I screamed aloud in my car!
I listened to these podcast with relish (LC, HFCS-free relish) and I’m sure I’ll play them back many times. What a treat to hear Gary Taubes open up about his journey working on GCBC, bringing it to the public, and giving talks, facing off with Ornish, dealing with publishers, talking to well-intentioned but misinformed public servants. Wow.
Of all the times I’ve seen and heard Taubes talking about carbs, fat, disease and obesity, this was my first opportunity to hear him talk about talking about carbs, fat, disease and obesity. I loved it!! You could tell the two of you were having a good time, too. Thanks, Jimmy!
And I could have gone on for hours with him, Vesna. But we squeezed in 45 amazing minutes of audio delight. It will be interesting to do a follow-up in a year or so and find out if anything has happened as a result of his efforts. THANKS for listening!
