It's worth reading a book like "Don't Believe Everything You Think: The 6 Basic Mistakes We Make in Thinking". One of the points to be made is that statistics aren't indicative of a single person's experience. It means that he shouldn't be declaring that dieting is wrong for a specific person, and that Jimmy shouldn't be arguing against it by his personal experience.

These statistics are also by correlation. Jimmy has both in this podcast, and previously, explained the health risks of dieting. A lot of these things can easily explain why these correlations occur.

To summarize, I think both authors have it wrong. Instead of pointing out the fallacies of statistics, Jimmy has relayed his personal experiences. Let's just spend the time emphasizing the benefits of weight loss, and the harm of incorrect weight loss methods, and we'll be just fine.

Why does Ampersand hold diets to a different standard? With his way of thinking we should only have one way of doing anything. For example: antibiotics must be a waste of time too since no one has created a single antibiotic to cure everything an antibiotic is suppose to and make it work for all types. Some people have an allergic reaction to penicillin. When it comes to health there isn't a "one size fit all" solution.

I enjoy a lower carb way of life. It has given me tons of energy. Energy I now use for exercise. The exercise and weight loss have lowered my blood pressure, reduced body aches, improved sleep, reduced "brain fog", well the list could go on and on. Bottom line: I found something that is working for me. I have lost 46 pounds since June 24, 2007.
I try to keep an open mind to other people's views like Ampersand but the results clearly speak for themselves.

Jimmy - I only found you two weeks but already I am a dedicated fan. Thank you and keep up the fantastic work!

Yeah, he sounds like one of those in the "fat acceptance" movement who just want people to accept their obesity without any regard for their health. It breaks my heart.

Jimmy, it takes all kinds . I just thank God daily that I found the low carb way of eating. People such as Ampersand are looking for a way out of facing their problems. Low carb is not a cure all but it is a great start to being healthy.

I agree, this "paradox" is yet another excuse people will use to do nothing about their obesity. That's why I believe this kind of thinking by Ampersand is sending the wrong message.

GREAT COMMENTS, BamaGal!

Actually Jimmy---what this man is referring to is what is known as the obesity paradox. It is well known and documented.

"study was reported which found that fatter cardiac patients were more likely to survive hospitalization and invasive treatments than thinner ones, even when adjusting for age and other contributing factors. In this analysis of 130,139 heart disease patients, 5.4% of “normal” weight patients died, as compared to 2.4% of “obese” and 3.1% of “overweight.” Yes, those whose were “obese” were more than two times more likely to survive!"

Also those undergoing dialysis--if obese they do better

"Despite adjusting for every contributing factor, age, gender, lab work and other health indice, they found that for every 5 unit increase in body mass index (BMI) the risk of dying dropped by 10 percent."

not that I agree with it---it should not be an excuse for people to sit around and stuff their faces with junk--as I see many doing in response to this info

would I want to revert to my nearly 400 lbs--that's a big NO--I'm better off now--
