Coming up…even after your weight loss, you’ll need to stay focused.
Hey low-carb lovers! Welcome back to Episode 102 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” A new year is upon us which has given millions of people a clean slate about what to do regarding their weight and health in 2008. Many set New Year’s resolutions beginning last week and now they’re struggling to figure out if they’re gonna be able to see this thing through to eventual success. Take it from somebody who’s been there before–make up your mind right now that you’re gonna be more serious about this than anything you’ve ever done in your life. It’s not gonna take willpower on your part, but rather a steadfast resolve to make better choices for your health. You CAN do it if you are willing to put forth the effort to make it happen this time. Nobody else can do this but YOU, so stop whining about it, start implementing a proven strategy that will empower you to make the necessary changes in your life, and then DO IT! It’s really no more difficult than that. This message becomes even more critical for those of us who have been maintaining our weight for years which is why I want to address this further in today’s podcast.
Before I get to that, I wanted to tell you more about my new raspberry dark chocolate bar called “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Bar” that I mentioned in the previous episode. Ever since I first started blogging at my LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blog in April 2005, I have been both criticized and praised for the way I write. You see, I’m not content with simply regurgitating health and weight loss information in a very dry, impersonal manner that does not give people any practical context for using it in their own lives. Instead, I make every effort to share from my own experiences to help others who may be going through similar circumstances in their weight loss journey that I did. In fact, some go so far as to say they don’t care what a former fat guy has to say about diet and nutrition because all he is basing his comments on is what HE has gone through and not basing his writings on any professional medical opinion. While that’s true, I’ve never claimed anything otherwise. Plus, I make that point abundantly clear every single time I write a new column and even here at my podcast show. I’m not your doctor or nutritionist, but I have a perspective as someone who has lost a whole lotta weight and kept it off that you’re just not gonna hear from anyone else. If you don’t like what you hear from me, then nobody is forcing you to listen. There are plenty of drab and boring health podcasts and web sites out there to fit your tastes just fine.
At the same time, though, there are many more curious people who are intrigued by and attracted to my weight loss success story because I am able to connect with them on a deeper level that helps them deal with their own journey because this is such a very personal thing to go through. That’s why I write and speak out so passionately like I do to hopefully convey that livin’ la vida low-carb is about real people going through the struggles of life like everyone else. But the good news is this way of eating is radically transforming lives for the better which is why I can never stop telling people about what it has done for me and others who have tried it for themselves.
Today, I have an example of someone who empathizes with what many call a bit of weight creep four years since I started the Atkins diet. As my regular readers recall, I gained 10 pounds back of my total 180-pound weight loss by the middle of 2006 before finally getting my weight back down to 215 again at one point. But then the weight has since crawled back up again to 241 as of the recording of this podcast. Part of my most recent weight gain has to do with the fact that I am now actively lifting weights and trying to build upper body strength. I’m taking creatine which my personal trainer says will put on about 15-20 pounds of extra weight as water fills my muscles during my training. After just one month of resistance exercising, I can already see a big difference in the muscle formation in my arms which I will be blogging about soon at LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com. Let’s just say that I’m not too worried about my weight right now as long as I’m remaining committed to eating a healthy low-carb diet during my training. At some point, the weight will regulate itself and I’ll be exactly where I need to be along with some hunka, hunka burning muscle, baby!
I think the fact that I have blogged about my up and down battle with gaining a few pounds allows my readers to realize that this isn’t just some temporal journey to hit a goal and then you’re just gonna magically stay there for the rest of your life. It takes effort and hard work along with focus to be able to keep your weight maintained over a lifetime. My willingness to be honest about my struggles with this is probably what instigated the following response I received in an e-mail from another Atkins weight loss success story to share her similar experience and concern. Here’s what she wrote:
I, like you, lost a big chunk of weight on Atkins/low-carb. Over 13 months I lost 75 pounds. I kept it off over a year AND I’m now seeing 5 pounds come back that I just cannot lose. I don’t understand how I could lose the 75 pounds very steadily and not feel hungry or deprived but cannot seem to get going on this 5 pounds. Now my friends, co-workers and even the owner at Curves say “But you are so skinny–you don’t need to lose any more weight.” Ah, but my thinking is if I allow myself to gain 5 pounds over the last 4 months, then what is to come? Another 5 in 4 more months and then another. Before long I don’t think I’ll be able to stop and I’m worried this. I see you almost in the same boat with your 20 pounds that sneaked up on you and you also are having trouble getting it back off again. So, what is it that made us able to lose such a large amount and now we can’t get this little amount off? I know it has to be mental. I’ve tried all sorts of mind games with myself. The best I can figure out is that after losing all that weight I feel like I “deserve” a little glass of wine on the weekends and an extra handfull of nuts. I also know I am eating past the comfortable level and into the stuffed area at times–even though it is low-carb/high-protein, it is still WAY to much for me to be eating. It’s obsessive behavior because I can’t stop eating even when I know I’m over eating (like an entire bag of microwave popcorn)!! This is the stuff I did to gain the weight in the first place. What is going on with me? I love my new body. I love the clothes. I love being healthy. Why am I sabotaging myself AGAIN? Jimmy, thanks for listening to my concerns. I love your blog and read your posts daily. I also love the news, the tips, the interviews and everything else. Keep up the great work.
Before I share my extended thoughts on the thought-provoking questions brought up in this e-mail, let me share with you the quick e-mail response I wrote back to her:
Don’t try to overanalyze it. Just keep on livin’ la vida low-carb (which is what I am doing) and keep smiling. Remember how far you’ve come so you have the proper perspective on where you are going. It’s gonna happen, so just hang tough. I appreciate your honesty about this, but I urge you to keep at it.
Was that too simplistic of an answer? Perhaps, which is why I’d like to expand upon my thoughts some more. Let’s look at the reasons for weight gain. Mine happened a couple years back because I allowed those extra indulgences like the dinner rolls at the restaurant to become way too regular in my diet. Sure, I felt like I “deserved” it, too, but I have since learned that livin’ la vida low-carb is all the indulgence I’ll ever need. My slight weight gain in 2006 wasn’t 20 pounds, but rather 10. Still, like you, I didn’t want it to turn into 10 more and then 10 more until I was right back up over 300 pounds again in no time. NOT GONNA HAPPEN! In fact, the bells and whistles went off in my mind when I even THOUGHT about hitting that weight again. Yikes!
Your supporters are well-meaning when they say you look good enough now after your weight loss and that you shouldn’t worry about trying to lose anymore. Trust me, I get the same thing all the time from people I know when I tell them I’m trying to get down a few more pounds. They just look at me like I’m some kind of space alien or something for wanting to lose any more weight. They just don’t understand that this is something I need to do for ME. Remember this–these are probably the same people who very likely told you that you looked good when you were overweight, too, so they have a history of not being completely forthright with you and lying to you so they wouldn’t hurt your feelings. More than anything else, it is YOU who must make up your mind whether you need to lose weight or not. Nobody can decide that but YOU. If you feel good at the weight you are at right now, then do everything you can to stay there. Otherwise, start on a plan that will help you lose it again! Don’t obsess over all of this, though, because that can lead you right back into bad eating habits again that you will use to soothe your emotional pain. Then your weight goes up again and you’re back in that ruthless cycle that ensnares so many. Don’t be one of them!
Although my weight right now is at 241 pounds while I’m gaining muscle, that’s still relatively maintaining my weight for over three years and counting. I haven’t GAINED any substantial amount of weight since 2003 and THAT HAS BEEN OVER FOUR YEARS IN A ROW!!! Now that’s keeping all of this in the proper perspective, don’t you think? Is it frustrating to see livin’ la vida low-carb be more challenging this time around than it was for you before? Sure. But keep in mind that your body is different now as the skinny, healthy person that you are. It doesn’t have to be a mental problem necessarily. Quite possibly it is physiological and paying attention to your calorie intake may be what is needed for you now. That may seem like a foreign concept to you in a discussion of livin’ la vida low-carb because you never counted calories while losing weight the low-carb way. But, again, that was when you were much bigger. Things have changed for the better and now your diet should change with it. One thing this e-mailer wrote that really hit home with me because I find myself doing the same thing sometimes is the part where she said she “can’t stop eating even when I know I’m overeating.” Oh my gosh, it’s confession time people. I’ve caught myself doing this exact thing on occasion especially this time of year. I don’t know if it’s the cold weather, being indoors a lot, or what, but I have sometimes found myself eating a very healthy low-carb dinner and less than 30 minutes later opening up the cabinets to see what else I could munch on. WHY AM I DOING THIS TO MYSELF? I’m NOT hungry! Plus (even MORE confession!), I’ve been known to let my cardio exercise go by the wayside or even cut my workouts short on the days I have done them. Although I’m focusing on lifting weights right now, that doesn’t give me license to stop walking on the treadmill or elliptical machine. Why am I doing this to myself? Am I getting lazy even though I know how good exercise makes me feel when I do it? Talk about “sabotage!”
Let this all be a lesson to everyone within the sound of my voice that old habits really do die hard. Even still, this is no time to panic. The key is to recognize when these feelings hit you and immediately find something else to occupy your mind until it passes. Remember, that’s exactly how you lost the weight the first time and I urge you to conjure up the spirit of that strength you had before because it will help you now. You see, isn’t it good to know that you’re not the only one who has these thoughts because they can hit even the best of us? I constantly remind myself that I’m not there yet despite my successes over the past four years. It really does take a DAILY CONSCIOUS EFFORT to remain focused on the goal at hand and we must stay alert and ready for anything that could derail us, including our own self-pity. More than anything else, I believe you should stay encouraged and don’t ever give up hope. We beat ourselves up enough when we haven’t been perfect, but it’s not the end of the world. Recommit yourself starting RIGHT NOW to do this low-carb lifestyle change like you’ve never done it before. I’m telling MYSELF this message as well because it is something I need to do, too. Just be glad you’re not livin’ la vida low-fat! Talk about torture! Livin’ la vida low-carb is always going to be a work in progress. If you ever think you have fully arrived with this way of eating, then watch out! Letting your guard down is in a sense being cocky and self-reliant when you know you are susceptible to having the whole house of cards come tumbling down on top of you at any moment. Zero in on what you need to do and then DO IT! I’d like to say a special THANK YOU to my reader who e-mailed me for bringing up this incredibly important topic because we don’t need to ignore it any longer. This goes to the very heart of why people fail so often when it comes to weight loss and improving their health. Will it be easy to see this to the very end? Nope. But at least you actually care now and want to do something about it. How many people can say that? Now that’s what I call progress.

From over 400 pounds to 230, Jimmy Moore is

Thanks for the reminder and encouragement. I am still relatively new to LC (5mo) and figuring out when I am eating out of habit or hunger has been a challenge. Also figuring out that I have “trigger” foods even if they are allowable, and that these may be foods I need to stay away from has been enlightening.
Hi Jimmy,
Thanks for giving me the encouragement to get back on track after going crazy with the dressing and cranberry sauce during the holidays. That “another handful of nuts” part says it all - even though the nuts may be raw almonds, healthy, etc., the carbs/calories are still adding up. I can vouch for every word as being the absolute truth in episode 102. The “creep” is real and it will be our downfall if we don’t wake up and quit allowing it to go on right now!
Cheers,
Dennis
Thanks, Jimmy, for your constant encouragement! I put back 5 pounds since Thanksgiving and it upsets me! I weigh every day (sometimes 2x) but I know this is a constant battle for me and I can’t eat those extra nuts. I feel great, though, and my doctor took me off cholesterol meds and is weaning me off BP meds, too. Yeah! I need to lose those last 10 pounds and be aware of what I’m doing! Hoping I win your free chocolate bars, though!
P.S.
The bars are the best yet for our purposes if used sparingly.
Also, I think if we get back to WRITING IT DOWN as we consume every carb, it will put it all into perspective and get us back to factual reality immediately (which is what is needed). Gods speed to everyone who is struggling…
THANKS Jenny, Dennis and Jane!
Jenny: You’re doing fantastic and I urge you to keep it up!
Dennis: I recently got back to logging EVERYTHING I eat…very enlightening!
Jane: You will get back down again…just stick to low-carb living!
GOOD LUCK IN MY CHOCOLATE GIVEAWAY!!!
Jimmy,
I have been mentally struggling so much much lately. I almost cried listening to this podcast.
I have not gone “off plan,” but I must admit that I think our dreaded enemy………..the Carb Creep…has taken hold lately.
Too many cashews here, an extra LC ice cream treat there….my total daily carbs have still been low compared to traditional low cal diets, but I think they have creeped up enough that my weight loss has stalled or gone up a few pounds….it comes back down, but its up and down….2-3 pounds.
And although I KNOW I have lost 73 pounds, and that people tell me I look amazing, and that the change is drastic enough that some people do not recognize me if they have not seen me in a while, When I look in the full length mirror at myself, all I see is a pathetic fat man. Intellectually I know that it is not true! It must be the illogical, emotional side of me seeing it.
I really don’t know.
How can I have come so far physically, and yet….my body image is still stuck with the old larger self.
There is a commercial that I see lately about some weight loss thing….some overweight women look in a mirror and see themselves as thin and fit.
For me, it is the opposite.
I realize I am 37 pounds away from my ultimate goal weight of 180, but I can not seem to focus on the positive lately. 73 pounds lost is incredible….How do I get myself to remember that?!??!?
God has controlled my hunger, appetite and cravings for almost a year now.
It hurts to write this. Tears come up at odd moments.
But I think by writing this, it will help me overcome.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Wow. This was a touching story for me as it got down to the nitty gritty of what was going on with me before I started living la vida low carb in late December. I think we all experience self-destructive behavior and actions at some time or another.
I had struggled with sugar and carb addiction for most of my life, but had never been able to stop eating those things for any length of time.
My weight had been creeping up, but I had been trying to get it back down by eating mostly veggies and not much else. Of course that didn’t work! I was back at the sugar and junk carbs in no time!
After searching the internet for help, finding some great low-carb websites, and watching ALL of the Livin la Vida Low Carb YouTube videos, I read Dr. Atkins’ books and started induction about 2 weeks ago.
The thing I did not really expect was that after I lost the part of my belly that was sticking out over my pants, I realized how out of touch with my self I had gotten. It has been very emotional for me because I feel like doing low carb has started to give myself back to me. Now I have SO much more control over my food, eating, health, choices, body, and life!
I also wanted to mention that including plenty of fats has been a lifesaver to me in getting rid of the cravings. I have never been able to eat a whole lot of protein, so my strategy has been the high-fat, adequate-protein one. The fiber in veggies like lettuce, cucumbers, and zuccini has really helped as well.
Another wonderful side effect has been helping my family members. They have all been struggling with blood sugar roblems, and low carb combined with higher fat and healthy fiber has so far been doing the trick for them.
Thank you SO MUCH to all of you who are supporting the low-carb lifestyle and sharing your successes and struggles! You all have helped change many lives (including mine) for the better.
Just don’t give up! Negative feeling sometimes happen, but there is always a way to feel better.
Try adjusting your fat/fiber/protein ratios, examining your lifestyle and keep reaching out and researching to find what works for you.
We can all do it!
Abner, you should be proud for the hard effort you have put forth in your weight loss. But remember you are doing this for your health, so worrying about your weight is really irrelevant. I know it’s difficult to think about this, but weight loss is merely a SECONDARY side effect of livin’ la vida low-carb. Stick with the most healthy way of eating you’ve ever tasted! You’ll be so glad you did…for your health’s sake!
Tara, you’ve inspired ME today and I appreciate that so much!
Hi Jimmy!
Great job on your podcasts, blog, and your book!
I just want to back up what others here have said about logging your food. It’s critical, because the carb creep can be insidious and we get surprised by it, even those of us who have been on this way of eating for a long time.
I can also relate to your admission about easing off your cardio or weight workout sometimes because I’ve been there, done and do that also myself. I think it’s natural for us as humans to have cycles of sticking with something for a long time, then slacking for a little bit until something smacks us upside the head and we get real again. The important thing is to get back to the usual program again, or mix it up a little, just in case boredom has set in.
We can all do this!

Thanks for all the encouragement, Jimmy. It really needed to be said! I know that I was upset after I found out I gained a few pounds thanks to some of the not-so-great low-carb products, but I’m back to whole foods now and I love it! I’m a lot more active now that I’m back at school, so I guess now all I have to do is wait for my body to do its thing and get rid of this extra fat! I’m also trying to eat a lot more fat. It’s hard though, since I don’t like pasteurized dairy products (and I can’t get any of the real stuff right now), plus I’m nearly out of coconut oil. Oh well, I’m doing all right for now. Thanks again! Take care!
Carolyn, it’s always good to take it easy when you’re hurt or significantly tired, but skipping workouts for no reason other than you just don’t wanna is not good enough. You and I will both get there if you just stick to it.
Keep at it TigerEyes! Restock on your coconut oil and add some heavy whipping cream to your diet. I guess I’m just so used to eating about 65-70% fat in my diet. My chocolate bars have a TON of fat in them, too.
Episode #102 ROCKED Jimmy ! It sure give me a lot to think about.
I hate to say this but, I’ve always been the kind to hate exercise. I’ve never really like to be hot and sweat. But I know its good for me and I just need to get up and start moving. Thanks for the boost I needed.
Hi Jimmy,
This message came at a great time, since Ive recently gained back 15lbs . It has been 4 years since I started LC..Guess I got sloppy. I am back on the wagon, and am down 9 of those pounds. Keep up the great work.
NewVision, you are VERY welcome and I think you’ll change your tune about exercise the longer you do it. It’s invigorating and you can feel the difference it makes. GO FOR IT!!!
I’m happy this helped you too Beth. A lot of people are getting over the holiday weight gain and want to get back where they were. Sloppiness has a way of happening the longer you go through life. It’s funny how we always come back to what we should have never left in the first place–that’s livin’ la vida low-carb, baby! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Hi, Jimmy! It’s your big fan in Taiwan. I listened to this podcast while riding on a bus with a ton of Taiwanese people who eat rice and noodles on a daily basis and are still quite thin. I don’t have their genes, though…and even though I work out all the time, eating carbs just makes me gain weight. So I’m doing my best to live-la-vida-low-carb, and you are an incredible inspiration to me. I really enjoyed this podcast, and even if everyone around me is slurping noodles and eating rice, I’m going to pass on those starchy carbs and go for the spinach and protein! I am also making a trip to the U.S. in a couple of weeks and plan to get some of your Low-Carb bars while I’m there. I guess I’ll need to order them online ASAP so I can pick them up before I head back to Asia. And, of course, if I happen to win 3 free bars, that will be an added bonus!
Keep up the great work, Jimmy, and God bless you!
Thanks Jimmy for addressing that topic. I’m kind of an Atkins yo-yo dieter, so I know from much experience how easy it is for the pounds to creep back on. Even worse is the rationalization that losing weight while livin’ la vida low carb is so easy, it won’t matter if I gain a few pounds over the holidays! Unfortunately, it seems to come on about three times faster than it comes off. I’m back in weight loss mode, which for me is much easier than maintenance mode, but my goal this year is to change that. I appreciate your insight and encouragement!
Hi Jimmy,
You are so uplifting and you keep me on track. Thank God for you and Christine! Keep up the good work! We love you! God Bless ya’ll!
Way to go Taiwan gal! You can do it!!! Enjoy your time in the states and ENJOY my chocolate bars.
You hit on an excellent point Scott! Just because low-carb dieting makes it easy to lose weight does not give us license to gain weight during the holidays and other times. There’s worse things that can happen to your health than just gaining a few pounds. Health to me is the biggest reason for ALWAYS eating low-carb.
We love you too Tania! KEEP AT IT, too!
Wow, I’m enjoying the comments to the podcast as much as the podcast. My goal is to eat low carb for health. My Mom is just not buying into it, however. She was a home economist for our county for decades, and she thinks Atkins and high fat is unhealthly. She made tons of Christmas cookies again this year, and truffles, and rye bread, and oatmeal raisin bread, yet she continually complains that she needs to lose weight. I try to gently tell people about how bad sugars and many carbs are for your health, but many still think fat is the enemy. I’m really hoping that the so-called authoritative sources will start seeing, supporting, and reporting the research. Oh well, even that won’t stop me from the occassional (well, frequent) extra handful of nuts or the extra glass of wine!
Great message for the new year. I experienced a little creap over the holidays, eating too much (even if it was low carb) and slacking off on exercise. Now I’m back on track. Perserverence and permanent lifestyle change is the key.
Wow, that is exactly what I need, right now! The email was so like me, only I totally lost my focus after my 50 lb loss and in 5 years gained it all back…5-10 lb at at time…plus another 10. I’ve been struggling the past 6 weeks to stay the course and lose that 60 lbs. and keep going to my goal of 100 lbs. I have that obsessive behavior of “can’t stop eating” and just seem to “need” that comforting food. Thanks soooo much for all you do to help, your wonderful information, examples, etc, etc….and your truthfulness! God bless you (and Christine)!
Jimmy, I love your podcasts. Thanks for taking the time to encourage the rest of us in this WOE. Please keep up the good work.
Cathy
Amy, you are so right! People get all hysterical at the fat content of a food, but when you ask them about the sugar in it, they shrug their shoulders. That’s why I wrote this blog post about how carbohydrates deserve the “fat” treatment so that people will understand how unhealthy many of these really are. People don’t have a clue!
You got it, Dan! We all go through it, but it’s those of us who get back on it when we recognize the “creep” has happened that determines who is ultimately successful.
Esther, I’m so happy to hear this podcast was helpful to you. DON’T GIVE UP, my friend, you are WELL on your way.
THANK YOU, Cathy, and I’m happy to just keep giving back a small portion of the blessing I have been given and continue to receive on a daily basis.
Jimmy and Christine,
I can’t tell you how helpful your podcasts and youtube videos have been to me. Too many people still see this way of eating as simply a fad diet that will eventually end in failure. You are the perfect inspiration to those of us who want to break old unhealthy habits, and eat low carb for life. Your experiences are so beneficial for helping the rest of us stay motivated, and I absolutely love your sense of humor. Thanks so much, to both of you, for your dedication! I can’t wait to try the new chocolate bars and the True lemon, lime, and orange products!

THANKS so much, Kim! You encourage me with your presence and faithfulness to the work I am doing. God bless you!
Just got your book, “Living la vida lo carb” on Friday. Getting a list to go grocery shopping today. Thanks for the great #102. I’ll be back every day. Wish me luck.
YOU CAN DO IT, Sharon! Never stop learning and being encouraged in this lifelong journey. You’ll NEVER regret it!
Let me know how I can help you in any way.
