This is Episode 73 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Welcome back to the show as we dive into another exciting excursion into the amazingly healthy low-carb lifestyle. It literally changed my life forever by helping me lose nearly 200 pounds and it make a real difference in your weight and health, too! Stick around a while and you’ll see why there’s no healthier way to live than livin’ la vida low-carb. Regardless of your diet of choice, though, there is most certainly one food that is arguably the worst possible thing you could ever eat. We’ll find out more about what that is in just a moment.

First I wanted to tell you about the Atkins products from Atkins Nutritionals. These fabulous bars and shakes are absolutely fantastic for low-carbers who need a quick meal or snack and there’s a great variety now, too. Grab a quick Atkins protein shake in the morning on your way to work or even the original Atkins Advantage bars provide all the nutrition your body needs to keep you moving in your busy lifestyle. There’s also the new Atkins Advantage Caramel Bars and I especially enjoy these because the decadent caramel in these is far superior to most candy bars you can get on the market today. We all have our favorite foods, don’t we? Especially those of us who are on a healthy eating plan like livin’ la vida low-carb, we are able to enjoy some of these delicious foods as part of our eating plan, including tender and juicy cuts of meat, fine cheeses, fresh salad greens with full-fat dressings, butter, coconut oil, eggs with the yolk, and so much more. Some of the so-called health “experts” out there have described the low-carb diet as “extreme” and “dangerous” for allowing such foods to be freely consumed as part of a healthy diet. But this has always amused me because the foods choices on most other “diet” programs such as low-fat/low-calorie programs are a lot more limited in their food choices than low-carb is and not nearly as appetizing or, what’s the word, uh, natural? One taste of fat-free cheese or skim milk would gag anyone. The food choices you get to enjoy on low-carb are so incredibly delicious and satisfying even while you are losing weight and getting healthy. BONUS!

But there is one food in particular that you should absolutely avoid completely when you are on the low-carb lifestyle or ANY weight loss plan for that matter! The worst possible food you could eat when you are livin’ la vida low-carb is (drumroll please)–A doughnut. Gasp! (Psycho theme) Not only are they chock full of so much carb-heavy sugar and white flour you’ll be out of ketosis before you swallow your first bite, but they can be extremely addictive, too. Have you tried just eating one of these, especially when the “hot and fresh” sign is lit up and you just HAVE to pull in to pick up a dozen or two? Impossible! As the top baked dessert in America today, it’s hard to avoid this innocent-looking junk food with a hole in the middle that can literally destroy your low-carb progress. With doughnut shops on every corner, these little morsels of carbiliciousness show up in all sorts of places–the office, at church, at parties and even in your own home! But listen to me–don’t succumb to the temptation to have even ONE of these bad boys. It’s just not worth blowing your low-carb plan by giving in to this empty pleasure. Plus, you’ll feel so guilty after taking one bite that you won’t mind eating two or three! Why wouldn’t you? You’ll convince yourself that you’ve already blown it, so what’s it gonna matter? Does this sound like your rationalization for eating something like a doughnut you know you shouldn’t have? It’s exactly what I told myself for so many years whenever I would go on a diet. “Just this one time,” I would always tell myself. That’s the biggest, fattest lie we keep telling ourselves opening the door for us to mess up! When you give in, that is proof positive that you aren’t being serious about bringing your weight and health under control and that’s a dangerous position to be in.

Until you can make the best choice to completely abandon foods like doughnuts forever, then you will never climb out of that deep pit you are in as a result of your weight problem. Make up your mind right now that this is important enough for you to do that you will commit to refraining from eating anything that could derail you from achieving anything but incredible weight loss success you deserve to have happen to you. Does this mean you’ll never, ever get to eat a doughnut again? Well, that really depends on what your priorities are and how much temptation you think you can handle. If you can eat one and ONLY ONE every once in a while and not let it have an effect on your weight, then go for it. But most of us who have been under the heavy hand of the obesity monster for our entire lives don’t need to put anything in our mouths that will be detrimental to the cause and trigger a binge. Besides, in the end, you’ll never miss ‘em! I sure don’t and have been doughnut-free for nearly four years! WOO HOO! If you knew me, then you would know what a minor miracle this is. I used to be able to eat at least a half-dozen of them very easily when they were served by the boatload at work. That was a whopping 200+ grams of carbohydrates I was putting in my mouth at one single sitting! Yikesaroo! I shudder at the thought of ever doing that again! Thankfully, those days are long gone. If you must have a doughnut, then there are low-carb versions you can bake up in your oven for yourself. Go to the show notes section of Episode 73 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com to find a link to a fabulous low-carb doughnut mix I have tried and enjoyed.

You know, we all are very well aware how much companies like Krispy Kreme doughnuts are hurting because of people who are livin’ la vida low-carb. Even the corporate bigwigs at that particular company have admitted many times over the past few years that the Atkins diet alone has caused them to lose profits and has even been responsible for several stores that have been forced to close their doors for good. But none of this has fazed a Krispy Kreme franchisee named Lincoln Spoor who owns the famous doughnut units located in Las Vegas, Nevada. In an interview with Spoor, whose father incidentally was the CEO of Pillsbury when he was growing up, he says he is unconcerned about the financial impact on his business brought on by low-carb plans such as Atkins, Mediterranean, and South Beach which all encourage people following them to “stay away from sugar or stay away from the carbs.” Here’s what Spoor had to say: “There was a time when our corporate franchisor had said the Atkins diet is hurting us. I don’t subscribe to that view. I think what’s happening is people are very smart about what they eat these days. They ration their calories. You do, I do.”

Um, “ration their calories?” What in the world does that mean, Mr. Spoor? Who in their right mind thinks eating ANY doughnuts is a part of a healthy lifestyle? Is Spoor actually trying to convince people that Krispy Kreme doughnuts are indeed part of a healthy lifestyle? Yep, sure sounds that way, but he didn’t stop there. You are not gonna believe what he said next. Listen carefully to this next quote: “We are saying, ‘You know what, I’m rationing my calories or I’m on a diet but you know what, I really want something great. I really want something best of class, so if I cheat, and everybody cheats, then I’m going to cheat with the best.’ That’s what we do. People cheat with our doughnuts. They cheat with Häagen-Dazs ice cream, they cheat with Mrs. Fields cookies, they cheat with In-N-Out burgers.”

Did you hear that? This Spoor fella thinks “the best” food to cheat with is the “great” doughnut? Are you kidding me?! EWWW! I think I’m gonna hurl. And please don’t insult my intelligence by automatically ASSUMING that “everyone cheats” who goes on a diet. Sure, those who are not serious about their weight loss plan will slip up and eat those foods you mentioned, but they are in my opinion technically off their diet when that happens. Especially if those “just one time” cheats become daily ones. Just how often would people need to “cheat with the best” to keep a company like Krispy Kreme in business, Mr. Spoor? Daily? Weekly? Monthly? If it’s less often than daily or weekly, then pretty soon that would begin to catch up to your business and send you crashing and burning like some of your fellow franchisees have. The fact remains that you NEED customers to come to your stores DAILY and ordering lots and lots of doughnuts to keep your business profitable. Otherwise, the decline in sales will merely continue and deservedly so. What keeps you in business are the people who DON’T care about their weight and health who buy dozens of your products at a time to take to their home or office. While some can eat just one doughnut and be satisfied with that, there are many people who are like I used to be when I weighed 410 pounds who cannot stop feeding the sugar and carbohydrate beast that lives within them once it gets started. I could have easily down 6-8 doughnuts at one time and not even think about it back before I started livin’ la vida low-carb. But not anymore. Today, even the thought of one BITE of a doughnut just makes me literally sick to my stomach. Do they still look good? Sure. Do they even smell good? Of course they do. But I KNOW they cannot be a part of my healthy lifestyle change…EVER AGAIN! Once I go down that path, there’s no turning back. But Spoor disagrees.

“If you’ve gone off your diet if you’ve cheated a little bit and you’ve done that, it’s worth it. You’re like, ‘You know what? I’ve cheated, I loved it, and I’m glad.’”

How arrogant is it for someone like Spoor to pretend to speak for people who have cheated on their diet?! How does he know that people who cheated “loved it” and are “glad” they did it? I for one would feel so guilty from an emotional standpoint as well as physically sick from consuming all those empty carbohydrates that it could lead me to a binge eating attack that would balloon me right back up to 400+ pounds again. NO THANK YOU! Mr. Spoor looks like he’s a normal-weight man in the picture I’ve seen of him and I have no idea if he has ever suffered with being overweight in his life. But as one man who has struggled with being addicted to sugar and morbidly obese, I realized a long time ago that sugar can no longer be a part of my life. No matter what you say and believe about sugary doughnuts, Mr. Spoor, they simply cannot be a part of a healthy lifestyle. By the grace of God and through the unique visualization method of thinking of sugar as rat poison which I used back during my weight loss in 2004, I was able to take control of my weight and health and am going on nearly four years without allowing sugar to even cross my lips. There are just too many damaging effects that sugar can cause that it’s better to completely do without it and I encourage others who go on a low-carb program to do the same. Repeat after me–YOU JUST DON’T NEED IT!

Being the businessman that he is, Spoor said he is tinkering with some products to try to appeal to people who are on a diet. He said, “We’re working on a 100 calorie doughnut and a reduced sugar doughnut. And the key, of course, is to make it taste as close to our signature product as you can get. You do that two ways: One is by using the new sweeteners that are out there today, and the second is by reducing the portion. You go into any of the stores today, in the candy rack, all those candy bars are a lot smaller today than they used to be and the calories are lower and the sugars are a lower and the fat calories are lower and that’s one way of doing it.” Oh boy, that’s just what I want–a 100-calorie doughnut. NOT! Don’t they call that a doughnut hole? HA! Jumping on the 100-calorie gimmick bandwagon isn’t helping anyone with a smaller portion size, Mr. Spoor. What will happen is people will buy a whole bag of these “diet” doughnuts and rationalize in their mind that they can have more of them just because they’re supposedly better for them. Even a reduced sugar doughnut will still be jam-packed with white flour carbs that turn into sugar in the body. NOT GOOD! Spoor said these new “diet” doughnuts are expected to be out sometime this year along with a whole wheat doughnut attempting to take advantage of the whole grain craze that’s all the rage right now. Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr. Spoor, but none of these products are acceptable for those of us who are livin’ la vida low-carb. You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting your products to people on a diet as a great way to cheat. What far-fetched, warped mind would even think of pushing doughnuts to people desiring weight loss and better health? Only a cold, heartless CEO seeking to fatten his wallet at the expense of the weight and health of his consumers could possible come up with such a maniacal marketing plan. With half of Americans currently eating lower-carb, it’s only a matter of time before even more Krispy Kreme doughnuts stores feel the impact on their bottom line and are forced out of business. Pretending that your company offers products that are for every once in a while to try to drum up support among consumers is a sign of desperation and the clock is ticking to your final days. And Sporr knows it!

That’s it for Episode 73 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” How did you handle your sugar addiction when you started on low-carb? Did you quit cold turkey like I did or did you try to ease into it slowly and eventually greatly reduce or eliminate your consumption of foods like doughnuts? Let’s talk about it in the show notes section of this podcast episode at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. You can also e-mail me your comments anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. THANK YOU for choosing to listen to today’s podcast and I invite you to come back on Thursday for another uplifting and encouraging episode of the Internet’s #1 low-carb podcast show! So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

Sadly, Mr. Spoor is probably one of those people who have never had a weight problem, never had to diet, never had to even think about it. We all know people like this. He is just woefully ignorant of the psychological implications of “eating a donut”. It goes far beyond the calorie count.

You NAILED it, Linda! He’s definitely clueless of the tremendous head challenges that the obese face. “Just one bite” never is for people like us.

THANK YOU for sharing your comments!

I don’t “ration” my calories at all, I simply choose to get my calories from healthy foods instead. Krispy Kremes are fantastic, I admit I dream about gobbling them down by the box, but it’s not gonna happen. The easiest way to avoid the temptation is to glance (out of the corner of my eye) at my “before” picture. I look like a Krispy Kreme doughnut with eyeballs!

There are so many low-to-no carb treats one can have if the desire for sweets grows that strong.

As you talked about in the podcast - there is no reason I ever need to ingest sugar. None! Not one mouthful.

Amen, Morgan! When you go without donuts for a while, the temptation wanes dramatically. I could put one right in front of my nose, sniff it hard, and it wouldn’t faze me a bit. Now if I bit it, who knows? But thankfully I WON’T be doing that…EVER! :D

I received this wonderful comment about this podcast from a listener today:

Jimmy,

I’m really enjoying your Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb site. The encouragement, inspiration and education are such a great help in my personal battle of the bulge. I’ve been reading since July 1, 2007 when I began my Low-Carb journey [for the second time]. But today’s Podcast entitled “I’m a donut nut, I’m a donut nut…..NOT!” must have been written just for me. You’re readin’ my mail with this one man!

I’m jokingly referred to among my friends as the ‘Donut Guy’. They all know how much I love(d) donuts. As a matter of fact, I can truthfully say, “I never met a donut I didn’t like.” Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, Dad’s Donuts, Dippin’ Donuts, Little Debbie Donuts, Merita Donuts, Richie Kreme Donuts, Entenmann’s Donuts, Dolly Madison Donuts…to name just a few of my favorite brands. I lusted for Krispy Kreme Original Glazed and Krispy Kreme Maple Glazed; I also loved their Chocolate Glazed Creme Filled. I loved Dunkin’ sour creme, buttermilk, coconut, glazed, chocolate glazed creme filled, munchkins and apple fritters. I won’t bore you with any more details, I think you get the picture how much I loved donuts.

I often [3 - 5 days a week] went to Dunkin’ for a breakfast of their fantastic coffee, an apple fritter and sometimes a side of a couple donuts. After finishing that, I might get me a couple donuts to go. Then sometimes if my schedule permitted, I would come back in the afternoon for a donut break to kind of ‘de-stress’ for the day. I knew all the donut stores and they all knew me. I even bought donuts to take to other people as business gifts or rewards…hey what better gift than a couple dozen donuts.

One day I realized I had a problem. It was when I was driving down the highway minding my own business, when all of a sudden I passed a Krispy Kreme truck. It not only triggered a donut craving in me…I began to have thoughts that I didn’t know I was capable of having. I began to wonder how I could stage a ‘hold-up’ of a Krispy Kreme truck and get away with it! In a few seconds I came to myself and realized I had serious problems. I have laughingly shared this story many times with my friends and they all thought it was cute…but it was for real Jimmy. Now don’t tell me sugar is not addictive! Donut violence…the donut cartel…donut kingpin…dealing donuts on the street…what’s next? In all seriousness, I realized, now at age 54, I had to make a change or I was headed for some big time health problems in short order.

I was up to my heaviest weight ever…288 pounds…on my 5′8″ frame! Just like a fireplug, short and round, and built close to the ground. I was having a hard time bending over, breathing, walking, sleeping, working, getting in and out of my truck….and the list goes on and on. Like many of us, I have struggled with my weight all my life, literally! I still remember my mother taking me to the pediatrician and him putting me on a diet several times while I was growing up. Bless his heart, he did what he knew to do I guess, but he had me ‘dieting’ on such food as baked potatoes for dinner, dry toast with a little honey for breakfast and other non-sensical abominations. He allowed ’small’ portions of tuna and chicken breast [if only he knew]. I’ve tried dieting off and on since that time…I’ve never totally given up and I don’t plan to. Then in 2003 came my first ray of hope when a buddy of mine lost about 40 pounds on a diet I’d never heard of…The Atkins Diet.

I purchased a copy of DANDR and I was on my way. I started at 283 and lost down to 238 in a little over 3 months. I kept it off for about 6 months and went off the plan thinking I could eat ‘regular foods’ [read ‘carbohydrates’] again. WRONG! I once again hit the donut shops and swelled up like a toad frog in short order. It was nobody’s fault but my own. I gained it all back plus 5 pounds, putting me at my heaviest weight ever of 288.

July 1 of this year [2007] I began Lo-Carb again. I’ve been reading voraciously everything I can get my hands on about living the low-carb lifestyle. I know I must educate myself about more than getting thin. I must educate myself about the long term health benefits of the low-carb lifestyle. I’m following the Eade’s “Protein Power: Life Plan” this time around. I’m reprogramming my mind that this way of healthy eating really is a “Life Plan”. I’m down 17 pounds in four weeks…and no sugar has crossed these lips! I still have to give myself a ‘talkin’ to’ when I pass the donut shops…but I’ve not stopped at a single one…not even for coffee, and I don’t plan to start again. I realize that I’ve not been a carbohydrate addict as much as I’ve been a sugar addict. I have no problem leaving potatoes, pasta, rice and bread alone…it’s the sweets that call my name. However, I know that I’d be experiencing diabetic symptoms sooner than later if I didn’t kick the sugar habit.

One Dunkin’ Sour Creme Donut or Apple Fritter has 41 carbs! And I ate 2 to 6 or more a day! One donut is more carbs than I eat now in an entire day! The KK CEO’s quotes are all so ridiculous and unintelligent. But when you’re addicted to sugar…what does intelligence, logic and reason have to to with anything? DONUTS ARE EVIL! DONUT STORES ARE EVIL! DONUTS ARE POISON!

I now have power over donuts! I now have victory over donuts! Donuts shall no longer have rule over me! I’m on my way to healing a good health. I’m developing a healthy lifestyle and donuts have no place in that lifestyle!

And on another positive note….I’m taking all that donut money and spending it at the health food store on my supplements and healthy, fresh, low-carb foods! Take that Krispy-Kreme!!!

I know this is kind of long, but I just had to let you know, you really got my attention with your ‘donut’ post. Keep up the good work Jimmy! I look forward to your posts.

Sincerely,

Signed…..DONUT FREE IN TENNESSEE!

Donuts ,cake, pie, cookies, candy, soda, fast food-they all helped me get fat. They are truly taboo foods for me now.I follow the Atkins plan and that is my life now.Hard to do some days but I survive!I love the way I feel eating low carb and will not give into the sugar laden foods.Another great topic; keep them coming!

Wanda (15:54:37) :

Let’s not forget that the longer we are on low carb the longer how body won’t tolerate the “abuse” I know a couple weeks ago I suffered after a banana split…..something that I had a few times last summer.
But this one with 96 carbs and all the sugar, one is enough for me!! everytime I want to indulge in the sugar is everytime I know I can’t go back………

31 07 2007
Jimmy Moore (19:04:23) :

Oh, I’d puke if I had a banana split today. I think my stomach would explode from the SUGAR SHOCK overload (Connie Bennett would be aghast!). LOL!
