Welcome to Episode 42 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” as we get back into the regular routine again after a couple of week’s worth of interviews with some really fascinating people. I’m not finished doing interviews on my podcast show yet because I think they give you a chance to hear directly from some of the finest people involved in the low-carb community. Look for more of them to come later this year.
Today’s show is about an odd set of circumstances involving a pilot in the UK who was set to fly a transcontinental flight from London to New York late last month when he was summarily yanked out of his seat by airport authorities allegedly for drinking alcoholic beverages prior to taking off. What does this have to do with livin’ la vida low-carb? You’re not gonna believe it! More of that in just a moment.
Now that I have lost over 180 pounds thanks to the low-carb lifestyle, people seem to ask me many of the same questions over and over again. One of the most popular ones is, “Don’t you miss pasta?” I get very amused by this question because people automatically assume that you cannot eat pasta when you are livin’ la vida low-carb. It is very obvious these people have never heard of what is arguably the best-tasting king of low-carb pastas on the planet today called Dreamfields. Have you tried this stuff yet? I listed Dreamfields pasta in my book as a highly-recommended low-carb product for people following this amazing lifestyle change because it is far superior to those “other” im-pasta-rs (get it, impost..oh nevermind!). If you have already tried Dreamfields pasta, then you know it has an authentic pasta taste that is unbelievably delicious and it is good for you, too, with twice the fiber of regular pasta! A 2-oz. serving of regular pasta usually has a whopping 42 grams of carbohydrate. But through the magic of subtracting the “digestible carbs” from that total with the Dreamfields pasta, you are left with ONLY FIVE GRAMS that count towards your total daily carbohydrate intake. You will NEVER believe this stuff is low-carb. But it is! So why not give it a try today? Go to the special page for listeners of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” at DreamfieldsFoods.com/Livin-La-Vida to access a valuable $1 off coupon immediately so you too can join the Dreamfields revolution. Try Dreamfields for “guaranteed great taste..without all the carbs.”
So did you hear about this wacky story with the “drunk” pilot? It was all over the news this past week when a Virgin Atlantic Airways pilot was accused by a fellow airport worker of drinking because his breath allegedly smelled of alcohol. The 47-year-old male pilot’s name has been withheld for privacy concerns, but he was arrested and not allowed to fly that plane from London’s Heathrow airport to JFK airport in New York City on March 31, 2007. When British police issued him a breathalyzer test shortly thereafter, he registered a positive reading for alcohol despite insisting he had not drunk a single drop. However, when a blood test was administered by police later that day to confirm the breathalyzer findings, the police were stunned to find that the alcohol content in his blood was “the equivalent to that of a non-drinker.” So what the heck happened?
Well, it turns out the pilot was telling the truth about his lack of alcohol use, but forgot to mention another culprit that would make the breath test show up as a false positive–it was his low-carb diet! I’m not kidding you. These tests for alcohol on the breath can be fooled into thinking a person has been drinking when it fact they have not because of the ketones present in the body when you are livin’ la vida low-carb. The tests can’t tell the difference between alcohol and ketones. Isn’t that absolutely crazy? Now that this misunderstanding has been worked out, Virgin Atlantic Airways has said the pilot “has been cleared” and “is now free to resume his flying career.” So, do you think he’s gonna stay on his low-carb diet?
What do you think about this story? I hate to brag and all, but you know I was on the cutting edge of this very intriguing side effect of livin’ la vida low-carb last September at my LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com blog when I warned my readers about the false positive that could happen on a field sobriety breath test if a police officer pulls you over. This is very serious and could happen to YOU if you are in the right set of circumstances. As you know, people who are on the low-carb lifestyle, especially in the most ketogenic stages eating around 20-40g carbs daily, induce heavy ketosis in their body to begin burning all that stored fat that’s inside of them. That’s what makes low-carb work so spectacular! But an experiment conducted by a scientist friend of mine last year showed those excess ketones that come from livin’ la vida low-carb can actually show up on the breathalyzer test as a false positive for the presence of alcohol. Conducted over several weeks, the scientist first made sure his body was not in ketosis and tested his blood alcohol content. Predictably, it came back with a ZERO reading. Then he allowed his body to get into ketosis and ran a series of tests with the breathalyzer. He scored as high as a 0.04% blood alcohol content, which is about half of what the legal limit is in most states. Keep in mind that he consumed no alcoholic beverages, no cough syrup, no mouthwash, and had no residual starch or sugars fermenting in his mouth. This reading he obtained was based solely on the ketones his body was producing while low-carbing. The conclusion of my scientist friend was that some people could yield even higher results that would push them at or above the legal limit for being drunk if they were administered a breathalyzer test by a police officer. In other words, without drinking a single drop of alcohol, it is very possible that someone who is livin’ la vida low-carb could be arrested for DUI, convicted, have their driver’s license suspended or revoked and quite possibly jailed all because of their low-carb diet. EEEEK!
Now here’s a scary thought: Can you imagine what the reading would be for those low-carbers who DO drink alcohol?! Yikeseroo! This might be a good reason to decide to STOP drinking right about now, eh? One way to possibly get around this problem with the breathalyzer test producing a false positive for alcohol in your system as a result of being in ketosis is to request the officer issue a blood test instead of a breath test since ketones do not produce the same results on a blood test. It could very well save you the embarassment of being arrested for a crime you did not commit like that poor pilot in London who had to go through the whole rigamarole of being treated like a criminal when he was completely innocent. This may all sound so bizarre to you, but I highly recommend you take it very seriously and protect yourself from being falsely accused of driving under the influence. “Really, occifer, I’m not drinking and driving. I’m just livin’ la vida low-carb! Hick!” See how that one holds up for you in court!
That’s it for Episode 42 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Please visit the official web site for this podcast show at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com for notes and links about what you heard on the show today. Also, you can comment on any personal experiences you may have had with a false positive reading for alcohol while you have been livin’ la vida low-carb. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Be sure to come back next week for much more about the wonderful world of low-carb living. So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

As founder of Mission Possible Aviation, if the pilot is drinking something with aspartame,Canderel, E951/NutraSweet/Equal, he can appear drunk from the free methyl alcohol. Read this letter where a young man from Yorkshire was picked up by the police from school. He was drinking Diet Coke. Aspartame is reality is an addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic drug.

Your Royal Highness:
I’m writing again to Your Royal Highness about aspartame. [Canderel/NutraSweet/Equal/
E951] Forty-seven MPs have signed to have it banned.
From Yorkshire comes this vivid example of the damage this addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogen does to the brains of children. Specifically Matthew Hobson, a victimized English boy. Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006:
Subject: Accused Of Drug Use By School - Aspartame Allergic Reaction
Aspartame ruined my relationship with my family and I wasn’t trusted at school, now I hate them for what they put me through. The school decided that sugar soft drinks were bad for the students health so decided to remove all but the diet products from the cafeteria, I personally enjoy a sugar infused cola that has a taste diet drinks lack, they taste too artificial.
I started to drink the diet cola, I had no bad effects for a couple of days. Then by the next week, half an hour after lunch I would get severe itching in my legs and arms, so much so that it left blood marks in scratch lines across my limbs, I tried so hard not to start scratching as I couldn’t stop them for about an hour if I started.
To make matters worse I would also slur my speech, still unaware of what was going on. The second week my parents were called in and I was told that I would be under supervision at all times in school and my parents were not going to let me leave the house, they proceed to rip apart my room and have me sleep on the floor in their room.
Why? I was being accused of using Crystal Meth !!! I hope you can even imagine how I felt about all this, I huddled up in a corner crying at one point wishing I wasn’t born. I spent lunch in the corner of the staff room with a bag of crisps and my diet coke, again as soon as I left the room for lessons I itched like crazy. I have to miss out some details here because they upset me so much.
After being drug tested for a couple of days, police interrogating me, asking me who the dealer was and referring me to a shrink which I saw for another week, all this was going on, my life was so bad I just wanted to die.
This is where I met someone I will never forget, The Janitor. He saw me and said “are you alright there son”? I just started crying, so he took me to the supply room, sat me on a box and I poured out my heart to him, I clicked the ring pull on my drink and took a large gulp, He just stared at the can for what seemed like forever.
He snatched it off me, grabbed my shirt and pulled me up to the Headmasters office, he kicked in the door and started screaming at the headmaster. I was all over the place I felt so dizzy, emotional ,tired and out of it and I still didn’t really know what the hell was going on. He smashed down the can and the diet coke sprayed all over the Head’s desk.
I caught bits of the conversation, - “It’s the xxxx in these drinks - It doesn’t take a genius to work that out for God’s sake - Don’t you know what’s in this.” From here on he started on about his daughter having PKU and aspartame, he finished with reminding the head in front of about 20 staff surrounding outside the door where i was now stood, that the school in fact was responsible for my problems by removing sugar drinks from the cafeteria and was liable, and should expect to be sued.
He calmed down came out and walked me outside, he gave me his phone to ring my parents who then came to the school. The rest is history!!! I would like to thank Mark Winslow, the Janitor who actually saved my life, God knows what I would have done if he hadn’t stepped in. We did gain a settlement from the school and gave a generous sum to Mark as he did lose his job and was unemployed for a couple of weeks. He and his family now regularly meet up with us in the summer for BBQ’s and we couldn’t ask for better friends.
I hope my experience is of benefit to others, I think my reaction must have been very severe but if it can do that to you then it shouldn’t be in our foods. Matthew Hobson.
When you visited Florida you dined with Dr. H. J. Roberts and his wife, Carol, who gave The Princess of Wales the key to the city of West Palm Beach. Dr. Roberts is the world expert on aspartame, declared it a global plague and published the 1038 page medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, which he dedicated to me.
I’m enclosing a copy of the prestigious Ecologist with a 17 page feature on it, and I believe you already have the aspartame documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World. In it attorney James Turner explains how Rumsfeld got it approved after the FDA said no. As late as 1995 FDA published a list of 92 reactions to aspartame from over 10,000 volunteered complaints. Aspartame can precipitate diabetes, aggravate and simulate diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy, destroy the optic nerve, cause diabetic convulsions, and interacts with insulin. It also makes you crave carbohydrates so you gain weight.
The Trocho Study shows that the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol accumulates in the cells and damages DNA, with most toxicity in the liver, but substantial amounts in the fat cells, kidneys, brain and retina. Last month I visited a researcher in Barcelona who was threatened by the NutraSweet Company for exposing the pre-embalming by aspartame. .
Schools mistakenly advocate diet drinks exclusively. Matthew’s case is no doubt repeated by thousands of innocent children in UK schools. Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D., explains that reactions to aspartame are not allergic but toxic like arsenic and cyanide. I’m inclosing his lecture on aspartame.
This isn’t a rare case. Dr. Baret called me from the Dominican Republic. He changed the diet of 360 small children from milk to aspartame juice and almost all of them responded with abnormal behavior, cognitive problems. Knowing this was the only change he had made he re-searched aspartame and called me. I had him remove the toxin from their diet and four days later all the children returned to normal. It is clear that if this insane practice is not stopped Matthew’s case will become the norm.
Because of the horror of this decision several authorities have written new reports on the effects of aspartame on the brains of the unborn and children. They’re on http://www.wnho.net/report_on_aspartame_and_children.htm We email these 42 pages of articles to schools, pediatricians and OB-GYN the world over. Aspartame is a teratogen and causes birth defects and mental retardation. If the child survives and it damages the thymus gland it can have autoimmune problems all the days of his life and the DNA is probably damaged generations to come. It lowers IQ and triggers psychiatric and behavioral problems, and also interacts with medications. So no drug is safe for an aspartame consumer. The Italian Ramazzini Study has confirmed what FDA knew from the beginning, that aspartame is a multipotential carcinogen. Their new study confirms that Coca Cola causes cancer. This is a foremost European research center.
The tale of how aspartame got approved in England may be unknown to Your Royal Highness: G. D. Searle Co knew they couldn’t get it in other countries if it was known our FDA tried to have them indicted for fraud. They made a deal with a Professor Paul Turner in Food Standards who approved aspartame without anyone knowing. No studies were ever done in the UK. Parliament discovered it, and their dismay was reported in The Guardian. Nevertheless, approval wasn’t rescinded
Today there are efforts worldwide to recall aspartame. I’m enclosing my just released story in Health Freedom News which magazine goes to all Congressmen.
Robin Goodwin’s Falkland Island heartrending story is attached. His wife had an aspartame brain tumor and his daughter suffered seizures daily for 18 years until they learned aspartame caused them.
Your Royal Highness, I ask you to save many lives in the UK by removing aspartame and the aspartame manufacturers. I know you are against genetic engineering. This is a GM product. I look forward to your reply and help for the people of England.
Respectfully,

Dr. James Bowen began slurring his words and was thought to either be on alcohol or drugs. He was admitted to a mental hospital but in the hospital he was no longer on aspartame and the symptoms disappeared. He wrote:
I started using Aspartame in April 1983, when the Aspartame Lo Cal Kool Aid was first marketed. In 2 days it gave me a toxic cardiomyopathy so severe I had to then stop swimming. I then immediately lost my balance, so also had to immediately also stop going off the diving board. Deep chemical depression followed, terminating in Lou Gehrig’s disease. In just six weeks of use it aged me thirty years! When I stopped using it I had many severe withdrawal symptoms, and was then diagnosed as “Bulbar Palsy.”
MY RN wife was screaming at me: “Jim get off the Aspartame! It is killing you!” (I was so completely brain washed by Aspartame, that I could not even believe her!
Aspartame is very highly crafted poison, cleverly combining about ten different poisons, including :1. phenylalanine isolate poisoning. (Not all alike with dietary sources!), 2. The methyl ester-formaldehyde-formic acid- carbon monoxide toxic axis. 3.Methylated aspartic acid , (An extreme excitotoxin, implemented in many and vast brain damages! Including the common neural degenerative diseases!) 4. Diketopiperazine poisoning: Which the first toxicity studies (at 1/1000 the FDA legally requisite test dosage for only sixty days,) caused the highest incidence of brain tumor in rats that any chemical ever tested at any dosage ever caused.(The first 6 months of Aspartame soft drinks, saw a 10% increase in USA human brain cancers rates, and a 30% jump of our diabetes occurrence rate!)
When the FDA first refused licensure for Aspartame they did so, because it rapidly chelates poisonous metals out of containers and then carries them on in a totally absorbable condition, it couldn’t be proven safe and triggered brain tumors. It also triggered many other types of tumors from mammary to testicular. It should be noted that Pepsi and Coke delivery drivers certify that sugar pops never damage their cans, while Aspartame beverages frequently do.)

Hey, who knew?? Thanks for this info!
It’s definitely an underpublicized “side effect” of livin’ la vida low-carb. But it doesn’t mean people shouldn’t go on the healthy low-carb lifestyle because it’s the best way to lose weight and get fit on the planet!

One of my listeners who is a police officer had some unique comments to share with me about this issue:
Well I must say I actually learned something new, yet I am a bit skeptic on this one.
I am also a police officer and found this unusual yet interesting.
First off the odor of alcohol on your breath will not get you a DUI. You can in fact drink alcohol and drive but your BrAC will in Colorado have to be under .05.
If I or anyone was to contact you and assume that you had consumed alcohol I would request voluntary roadside maneuvers. The Standardize Field Sobriety Test are composed of three tests.
#1 Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus
#2 One leg stand
#3 Nine step walk and turn
None of these test should be effected by Ketosis and you would be on your way.
But lets just say they only offered you the PBT (portable breath test) and you did show positive for alcohol then yes it would seem your recommendation is correct and you would want to request blood.
So anyway, my point. I am putting together a low carb podcast that will be a lot different then yours, what’s the point of two podcast that say the same stuff. You make a better cheerleader than I anyway.
Currently I am not in Ketosis as of right now due to a fun Vegas Vacation and that I am a Field Training Officer and currently have a trainee that I have to eat meals out with. I tried the low carb thing and eating out and truly I prefer to wait till he moves on and I am on my own and can prepare my own meals. You get screwed when your not the guy making the food.
Before I go into Ketosis I will conduct my own experiment and I will add alcohol to the mix to boot. I am thinking of basically doing something like
Measuring 1 drink / 2 drinks / 3 drinks / 4 drinks/ in say 20 minute increments not in Ketosis and log BrAC
Then get into deep Ketosis and test to see if there is a reading at all and also conduct the same test above to see if it will elevate the readings.
This will have to be done with a PBT and not the machine at the jail we use for actual DUI’s. These machines are regulated and can only be used in conjunction of an actual DUI investigation and I am not willing to get a DUI
But the PBT should suffice even though the results would not be admissible in court.
If you want I will share these results with you.
By the way I predict that if the Ketones do make a false positive that they will not elevate the BrAC level when combined with alcohol.

Fascinating! I look forward to the results.
