Coming up…don’t forget to enjoy the ride when you’re losing weight.
It’s time yet again for your favorite low-carb health and weight loss podcast, “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” I don’t want to take up much of your time today in Episode 110, but I wanted to share an important message for anyone who gets easily discouraged and upset about their weight loss experience. If that’s you, then pay attention to what I have to say today because this could very well give you the proper perspective about how to handle those deep-seeded emotions and feelings that tend to crop up when you are shedding the pounds.
First, I wanted to preview an interview I will be conducting with a man named Phill Novak from North Braddock, Pennsylvania. Phill was featured on CNN recently after losing 192 pounds. Amazingly, the CNN story focused almost exclusively on the exercise aspect of what Phill did while only giving a cursory mention of the diet he used to lose weight. Wanna guess what he did? Yep, he started livin’ la vida low-carb eating about 15-30 grams of carbs a day.
In this whole story about such an incredible weight loss, they only mentioned that fact ONE TIME and the rest of it was on Phill’s workouts. Wanting to get to the bottom of this story even further, I called Phill’s home and spoke to his wife Norma who was gracious enough to talk to me a little bit about her husband’s remarkable journey. She said he didn’t follow any specific plan, but just cut way down on his carbs. He did it all on his own and continues to eat that way today to manage his weight. I asked for an interview with Phill and that was supposed to happen earlier this week. But it was delayed and I hope to do that this weekend for one of my podcast shows next week. It’s always fascinating for me to be able to hear how others have been able to lose such substantial amounts of weight and I look forward to sharing the story of Phill Novak with you very soon.
You know, I see the same thing happening time and time again. Somebody FINALLY gets excited about wanting to lose weight and get healthy and they become rip-roaring ready to go with their diet in hand and expectations galore! They go out to Barnes & Noble and buy some diet books, read up on all the blogs and forums on the Internet, and go to Wal-mart to buy a brand new scale and maybe some dumbbells to get started right. It’s an exhilarating time as they have such hopeful expectations for a brighter tomorrow. They begin they own great adventure towards Thinville with all the best intentions, motivations, and desires to be added to the list of the cherished weight loss success stories, but then those little creepy crawly mind demons start to creep into the open crevices of their thoughts and they find themselves quitting for good after only a few weeks or months.
What the heck just happened? Where’d that gung-ho spirit go? Unfortunately, this is the ruthless cycle that millions of people put themselves through time after time, year after year and I think I know why it continues to happen more times than not. I have a working theory about this issue, but I think it applies perfectly. See if you agree. When you begin on a weight loss program like livin’ la vida low-carb, the prevailing thought is that the diet itself will automatically take care of shedding the pounds for you without any effort on your part. And, to the credit of this particular way of eating, it does indeed work REMARKABLY!
But…(and you knew there was one of those coming, didn’t you?)
The thing I see most people forgetting to do when beginning a new journey to lose weight and get healthy is to enjoy the whole experience of it all. As cheesy as that may sound, think about it–you are on the verge of changing not just your physical appearance by shrinking pounds off of your body, but also radically changing your mind, heart, and soul for the better. Unless you have lost a TON of weight and seen this happen for yourself, then you can never know what I’m talking about. For me, it all came down to soaking it all in and simply enjoying the experience of losing weight.
Say what?! ENJOY! What’s to enjoy about going on a diet?! It’s so painful, Jimmy.
Ahhh, yes I know all about the pain, but now we’re getting somewhere. For some odd reason, the conventional wisdom regarding ANY weight loss plan is that it is going to be hard, dreadful, and probably not end up working anyway. Why do we beat ourselves up like this before we even get going really good? And yet it still happens. If that’s you, then let me just impart a little experience I have learned along the way while going through this process of losing weight and then keeping it off. No matter how you feel at any given moment about your weight loss journey, you are already a success. Why? Because you have chosen to care about taking a personal interest in your weight and health and then doing something about it. Most people can never truly get to that point in their life where they feel like what they are doing matters. My brother Kevin is in that boat right now and it hurts to see him so nonchalant about the future of his own health. But that’s his decision and I have to live with it. But for you personally, telling yourself that you are a success from the very beginning and then thinking about all the positive things that are happening in your life through this experience will give you the energetic boost in confidence that you’ve needed. What you think, you are, so why not think of yourself as the success you deserve to be?
Conversely, when you dwell on the negative, it’s no surprise that your thoughts will turn that way, too. How about breaking that negative cycle of defeat by only focusing on the positive changes that are happening to you. Do you seriously think NOTHING good is happening just because that stupid scale hasn’t budged for a day or two? Try these other benefits of the weight loss journey on for size and see if you can relate to any of them:
- Are your clothes getting looser?
- Do you feel like you are getting healthier?
- Have you started resisting temptations?
- Can you get out of bed in the morning refreshed?
- Has your life gotten a little less hectic?
So how’d you do? Did you answer YES to any of those questions I just posed? If so, then you may just now be realizing how very blessed you are to be traveling on the path you have chosen to shed the pounds and get your life back. Listen to me right now: If you are on a weight loss journey right now, then I urge you to absolutely ENJOY the ride and learn to have fun with it. Come up with games and challenges to push yourself to that next level because they really do work. I used to set a short-term goal to lose 10 pounds and would push myself to hit that goal. When I did, I’d celebrate with the happy dance and then begin another 10-pound goal. You’d be surprised how quickly those little goals start to add up. Watching that scale go down day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month was what allowed me to remain so positive about my progress. I didn’t need to put any needless pressure on myself to lose a certain amount each day or week because even a small weight loss was STILL A LOSS. It’s all about perspective, perspective, perspective. I cannot emphasize that enough for people who want weight loss so bad they can taste it. Don’t let those little demons in your head convince you to fail. If you think you can’t lose weight, then that’s exactly what will happen. The flip side is you can take charge. Beginning RIGHT NOW, if you are on a weight loss regimen and want to be successful, then do this. Take it all in, have fun by golly, enjoy the experiences you will go through, celebrate what is happening to you even if others don’t join you, and then never lose your focus on the prize that awaits you at the end of this amazing race–triumphant weight loss success, stunning health improvements, and a brand new lease on life. Don’t believe it? Well, I’m living proof of it! If this former 410-pound gargantuan of a man can cut his weight nearly in half and then keep it off over the long-term, then there is indeed hope that YOU can lose the 10, 25, 50, 100, or even 200 pounds that you need to get rid of as well. Take heart in knowing you WILL prevail when weight loss is no longer dreaded, but instead it becomes a lifechanging experience you’ll LOVE forever.
That’s all the time we have for Episode 110 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” What about YOU? Have you learned to make your diet something wonderful in your own life? If not, then why not? If so, tell us how well that is working for you. As always, please share your comments about today’s show in the show notes section for Episode 110 at our web site, TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. It’s always great to hear from you, so don’t be shy. We’ll be back again on Monday hopefully with that interview with Phill Novak about his nearly 200-pound low-carb weight loss success. We’ll see you then! So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

From over 400 pounds to 230, Jimmy Moore is

Yep, it makes sense! I tend to be a negative thinker, so will have to work even harder to keep at it for the long term. I did decide on small goals this time…and not even thinking about the “end” goal. That’s just tooooooo hard!
You go get ‘em, Esther!
I was yo-yoing with low carb but then one day something just clicked. I realized that I never feel as good as when I am following my low carb plan. The weight is coming off as well as inches. I sleep better; my mood is brighter. My skin, hair and nails look great. No afternoon slump. When I feel I’m getting bored, I go through my low carb library and search for new recipes. This is a ride I will enjoy for the rest of my life! Actually, I feel like low carb is letting me live a better life because of the way it makes me feel which is excellent. I’, livin la vida low carb!!!
And even if you never lost a single pound, Linda, you’d probably eat this way just for the health benefits. But ain’t it good to know you shed pounds, too?
HEY JIMMY
This makes sense.. but I will tell ya.. I don’t know that I am LOVING the way I am eating.. I am doing it.. it’s been pretty easy to accomplish.. but there are temptations that I give in to..
I am making goals each day… I reached all mine today but exercise..
but you know.. I think I will head in there now for at least 2o min on the treadmill… since I have nothing else to do.. and that usually leads me to the KITCHEN…
Thanks again for your inspiring messages!!
Have a LIVIN-LA-VIDA-LO-CARB-DAY!
HUGS, Cathleen
You WILL love it in due time, Cathleen. Keep at it and you’ll see what I mean.
Hi Lind
I have only been on low carb - almost no cheating - since early January. I am finding it so easy - though the first four days were a bit tough - head felt as though it was detached from the shoulders. All my cravings have gone - if I feel like a treat I have a bit of an Atkins bar - they have them in the supermarkets here - one of the rare low carbs in this country at the moment - they are still pushing the high carb low fat here - Australia. Are our governments insane to still be pushing this rubbish ?
Last week the energy kicked in BIG TIME - wow - I am often a bit slow - well more than slow in the morning - and it suddenly changed and I have been like it each morning since - and a fog that I never even know was there as I was so use to it has gone - I feel like a fresh wind has blown away the cobwebs - or is it just the carbs !
I enjoyed a great bacon and egg breakfast this morning later I am going swimming - 4th time this week ! I am so excited - and happy - the inches are dropping away - and I feel great - the best I have felt in years - I had about 16 pounds to lose - have abut 8 to go - in all the years I have been trying to do this on low calorie - low fat low cal etc I just couldnt keep it off - was an up hill battle just to lose it in the first place - then it would all go back on.
Thanks for all the great programs Jimmy too - I enjoyed the ones on Jonny Bowen - and would you believe I ordered his pocket book low carb and it arrived the same day as the first program - didn’t even know who this guy was - the book looked good on amazon so I ordered it.
Now have ordered his natural cures book.
Keep up the wonderful site Jimmy - I now come here every day and read the posts etc
All the best from Down Under
cheers
Helena
