I really enjoyed this podcast! It was interesting to hear what your mom went through! Thanks to the both of you for sharing!
She’s a typical career dieter who saw no other choice. I thought it was interesting when she said she didn’t do well on Atkins in the 1970s be she gained the weight back after “going off the diet.” Um, yeah Mom, that’s what happens when you stop eating the way that lost the weight. But I think she’s understanding that more and more as she approaches 60.
I had lap band surgery 9/06, and have lost 115 lbs. (to goal). It was a life saving option for me, and I have absolutely no regrets. But, living “low carb” and living with the band are not mutually exclusive. I eat only whole grains and avoid all simple sugars. The band gives me an edge by reducing the quantity of food I can eat, and by keeping me full longer between meals. It’s not a magic wand, though. It still requires better choices, both in food and physical activities.
Absolutely, Tami! Procedures like LAP-BAND and gastric bypass are merely tools…you still must change your habits–something my mom is learning the hard way.
THANKS for writing!
Your mom is a sweetie, Jimmy! She has been through a lot, as have you. Wonderful that you reach out to help others, turning your scars into stars so to speak. May God bless you for that and continue blessing your work in the years to come.
THANK YOU so much Jennifer! How sweet of you to say that!
Hi JimmyYour mum gave a great msg and insight to gastric bypass which is very different to what I have experienced with lap band.
I’m an Avid reader from Australia, and I have a lapband which I would not be without. Let me explain, I have been overweight all my life and tried all the diets out there even low carb which worked the best but I still found it hard to control my cravings and my hunger and couldnt sustain the lc way of life. My last hope was a lapband, but it hasn’t been easy, and I didnt just lose the weight in fact I gained it, its easy to do even with a lapband. So I decided to take control of my eating again and start atkins and it’s been easy this time around my band does not allow me to over eat and doesnt like alot of the high carb foods such as breads and pasta and rice so they are easy to give up, I love my life now and my lifestyle I have finally found a way to control my weight and for me and perhaps others out there a combination of things work best. I love low carbing and I love my band.
CONGRATULATIONS, Anon! Keep up the great work!!!
